Cryogenics is the study of very low temperatures or the production thereof, and the behavior of materials at very low temperature.

One application of cryogenics is cryostasis, in which lifeforms may age at a much reduced rate, or experience hardly any time at all.
Cryogenics is sometimes employed by pre-warp civilizations that attempt interstellar travel.

  • The term cryostatis can be used to describe patients in a cryogenic state, due to cryonics.

  • On Earth, cryogenics was applied to the preservation of some food as early as 1957.
