Personal History
Melissa’s early life was spent on a large buffalo ranch that her father owns in Southern Alberta. Growing up working the ranch with her father instilled a strong work ethic and sense of community in Mel. Her Grandma Craig would visit occasionally and try to teach her to “act like a lady” but that never lasted long as Grandma Craig had a life in Calgary and Mel was quite happy to continue on as she had before. As a consequence of her grandmother’s actions Mel hates having to wear dresses and “act like a lady” and will avoid it whenever possible.
When Melissa was 16 there was a major “100 year” flood throughout most of Southern Alberta and anyone who was available was called on to help. As they lived in the area Mel and her father both volunteered immediately to help in any way they could. While helping the flood victims Mel saw the efforts of the Starfleet detail save many lives. It was at this point she realized exactly what she wanted to do with her life.

Personality: Mel doesn’t make friends easily; she tends to observe people, especially strangers, more than she interacts with them. Every once in a while she will speak out with a really good rejoinder and surprise those around her who don’t expect it. Once she has made a friend she is very loyal and protective. She hates bullying in any form as she experienced it as a child.

Likes: Mel loves working with animals, she appreciates the quiet in her mind when she is working with them and loves the fact that she seems to be able to use her empathy with them to a small degree.
Dislikes: Lying, both being lied to or kept from the truth and having to lie; being told she can’t do something when she knows it is possible
Pet Peeves or Gripes: people whining about replicator food (she doesn’t like it either but it’s far better than rations or her father’s early cooking attempts)
Bad Habits or Vices: Fiddling with her French braid when she is nervous or deep in thought.
Achievements: Won the Provincial Barrel Racing tournament 3 years in a row; placed 3rd in the 16 & over category for archery when she was just 16
Disappointments: having to retake 1st year xenobiology at the academy, twice
Illnesses: She caught the measles from a classmate when she was 7 and had a little rougher time due to being 1/4 Betazoid. She can be prone to stress headaches. Other than that she has broken her arm twice (the same one both times) and broken her leg.
Strengths: Mel picks up new skills very quickly, especially if she has a chance to actually do what she is learning instead of just reading or hearing about it. She loves to learn new things and is always up for a challenge.
Weaknesses: She gets annoyed when others don’t keep up when learning new things. She hates it when the teachers have to slow down for others when she already understands something.
Fears: She fears being abandoned, this is part of the reason she is so slow to make friends.
Prejudices: Mel tends to get along with and listen to men better than women. She hates the Borg for what they have done to Earth and the Federation. While she is okay with Klingons (the whole honor thing rings a cord with her) Mel really doesn’t like Romulans or Cardassians and she really hates the changelings and Jem’Hadar for the destruction they have created.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jeans, cargo pants, t-shirts (usually with cheeky sayings on them), sweatshirts. You will very rarely find her in a dress; it usually has to be a formal occasion for her to wear one.
Distinguishing Features: Her long fiery French braid. She is also quite often mistaken for being younger than she is
Pets: She has a golden-retriever named Dolly who lives on their horse ranch near Calgary with her father.
Friends: She has people she spends time with but truthfully her father is probably her best friend.
Personal Paradigm Shifts
Most Painful Experience: When she was 7 Mel found out the full story of her conception and birth. Mike had to practically put her mother under house arrest while she was pregnant just so she wouldn’t do something to hurt the baby (her). Mary did not want the baby and the only way she agreed to carry it to term was when Mike offered her a first class ticket to anywhere in the universe and enough gold and jewels to set her up like a queen wherever she landed if she gave birth. Mary did not even want to see Mel after she was born, Mary left the hospital as soon as possible after the birth and never looked back.
Best Time: Mel feels the happiest times in her life were summers spent at home on the ranch with her dad. She would get to spend all day with him and they would quite often go camping together as they monitored the stock. During these times Mike taught her everything he could, both about her mental abilities and the outdoors.
Most Crucial Experience: Helping to deal with a major flood in Calgary. Working with others to rescue and protect the victims made her realize that she wanted to keep doing this but on a larger scale.
Role Model: Captain (Admiral) Janeway, mostly for her determination and drive to get her people home even when the situation seemed hopeless.
