Sarah's parents had never been the type to join Star Fleet, but she was still taught about the good that Star Fleet did throughout the majority of her childhood. So when the time came for the young woman to decide what she wanted to do for her life, there seemed to be only one choice for Sarah. Having already wanting to be a docotr, she decided the best way to utilize her skills was to join Star Fleet Academy and one day help people throughout the universe.
Graduation day saw Sarah being assigned to the USS Mattis. It wasn't a standard run-of-the-mill assignment as Sarah found herself aboard the 4th Marine Fleet's flagship. Commander David Sheppard, her Commanding Officer, seemed to present a good impression on their first meeting. Serving on a ship crewed by a majority of marines was initially uncomfortable, but as time went on Sarah managed to adapt to her surroundings.
As a Doctor on the Mattis, Sarah wasn't entirely sure whenever she was sent into combat with the Marines. She had always been told that she wouldn't be involved in the actual combat, and that her primary objective was to safeguard the marine's lives should they fall. However, as experience taught her it wouldn't be the case. In addition to saving lives, she had been forced to take an equal amount of lives away. Initially it bothered her, but as time went on she began to see at as something natural.
Commander Sheppard took notice that it seemed to be affecting Sarah's ability to function as a Doctor. It wasn't a big change, but it was a change the Commander didn't want to see progress any further. In his attempt to protect Sarah from the horrors she seemed to be experiencing, he put Lieutenant Coulson in for a transfer.
