Personal History

Founded in the late 22nd Century, the colonies of Beta Cyprus were created for one purpose – the mining of nillimite. A rare and valuable mineral, it is widely used in the refining of dillithium and in various terraforming processes. The irony was that nillimite only remained viable in a Class N environment, meaning that the inhabitants and workers of Beta Cyprus would forever live in domed cities, never able to use the very mineral they mined.

The Coopers were some of the original settlers of the planet, though only the most detailed histories would mention them. They worked in the construction of the dome cities, helped to set up the mines and the refineries in their lowest levels, and have worked there for the generations since. Each one has spent his or her time at the Shelf, the deepest mine, and worked their way through the refineries as they grew older. They were miners all, and they enjoyed it.Or most of them did.

Jonathan Cooper was different from the day he was born. He was born with his eyes wide open, and he never seemed to close them, always taking in everything he could. He started asking “Why?” as soon as he could talk, and he never stopped. He read every book he could get his hands on – fantasy, adventure, biography, science journal, whatever he could find. When other boys his age were out playing games, he was reading.

When he was 15, his father Mason took him out of school to give him his first taste of the mines. Generations of Coopers had done such, and most had never gone back to school. Jonathan was reluctant, going mainly because his father refused to listen when he protested. While they were deep underground, surveying a new seam they had just discovered, the worst happened. The Second Romulan War had started a few weeks before, but it had just found its way here.

Orbital blasts shook the planet, causing the new beams holding up the ceiling to creak and squeal in protest. They tried to get out, get to the safety of the higher mineshafts, but it was too late. The ceiling collapsed.

Jonathan spent six months in hospital recovering. Many of his injuries were minor, but his right hand and forearm had been crushed beyond repair. He received a prosthetic with full range of motion and tactile sensation, but he still can’t get over feeling it’s not quite right.

Mason never talked of his son going to the mines after that. In fact, they rarely speak, though not for lack of trying on Jonathan’s part. He knows his father blames himself for what happened, but no argument he makes can convince Mason that he’s wrong.

And so, knowing that any other choice would be an injustice to both, he continues with his plans to go to college off-world, the first Cooper to do so. He decides to join Star Fleet, believing it to be the best choice to help expand his knowledge.

He still remembers what it was like to take the shuttle up to the waiting transport, seeing his world from space for the first time, seeing his planet’s star. It made him want to share it with everyone.

That’s when he decided. He would show his world the wonders beyond the impenetrable clouds. He’d find a way to make his planet livable for everyone. Especially his dad.

Most of his Academy career was uneventful, as he didn’t have a lot of time for many extracurriculars. He spent his summers on scientific expeditions to border planets, but the school years themselves were spent mostly in study. The only people he considered himself close to were some other science cadets, a Vulcan named Salen and a woman named Melanie Bengston.

Melanie was something of a surprise, even to Jonathan. He started off just helping her with a class they were both in, but it quickly became more of a friendship than just a working relationship. She even managed to drag him out to a few parties with her, though he never stayed long. When he tried – despite his own worries – to pursue the relationship, she cut him off completely. It was a huge blow to his self-esteem, and he dived into his books even more.

Upon graduation, he received a posting to the Starfleet Science Institute, working as a lab assistant to several of the scientists there. He was happy, as he could stay up on the latest advances, work on some technologies on the bleeding edge, and not worry. So when his section chief, Commander Colso, told him to seek out an appointment to a starship, Jonathan was puzzled. Why should he, when he was comfortable here?

“Because you are comfortable,” came the response. “You have to push yourself further and further if you’re going to ever come up with a breakthrough like you want.” And Jonathan understood, at least slightly. So he took the first posting that came up, for the USS Yeager, just being brought back into service. Hopefully he can learn things out in the wider galaxy – not things in any book, but what it means to really be a person, a scientist, and an officer, that he could never have learned at SFSI.

Being assigned as the Chief Science Officer, Jonathan was a tad overwhelmed at first. He was glad of his crew chief, a long-service Bajoran Chief Petty Officer named Ryol Nalin, who helped and mentored him on how to be a department head, helping him through the rough times. He wanted simply to go back to his lab, and problems with his family only added to that feeling.

Their first mission was a fact-finding mission into Romulan territory, scanning the site of the Hobus supernova for information on how and why it happened. The ship came under attack by a space-borne creature, which invaded the ship and deactivated every single system aboard. He became trapped in the shuttlebay with Alice Dega, the Chief Tactical Officer, and they managed to capture one of the creatures.

Captain Nielson ordered it detained, but on a hunch he pulled rank on the security officer taking it away and took it to the science labs instead. He tried to run some detailed scans on it, but failed due to the creature being sensitive to artificial light. The creature died, though, as did its companion in engineering. After restoring power, they completed their scans and returned to Federation space, leaving Jonathan disappointed that he couldn’t figure out the twin mysteries of the creatures and the supernova.

On the way back to Federation territory, Jonathan receives word that Jennifer, his mother, was in an accident, though the message doesn’t say what kind. As soon as they make port, he heads home to find that she had lost both of her legs, and had had replacements grafted on similar to his arms. She was weak, but doing as well as could be expected. Tension was high between him and his father, who still couldn’t bring himself to speak more than a handful of words to Jonathan. The bigger surprise was his brother Malcolm, who was actively hostile. Adriana explained how their younger brother had lost his faith in Jonathan after he joined Starfleet, seeing it as his brother turning his back on family. Jonathan went back to the ship, things still unresolved about his family.

While on leave, Jonathan ran into Melanie again, who was stationed on Sierra-18. While he was a little unsure at first, he wound up helping her with an overly ambitious admirer she had acquired while there. After being decked by the man and having him wind up in the brig, he found out that Melanie still had feelings for him. She hadn’t intended to stop seeing him while at the academy; she merely hadn’t known what to make of her feelings, and by the time she sorted them out, it had been too late. They begin dating, vowing to see each other when he comes back to port.

The Yeager shipped out again, this time on a patrol of a nebula near the Klingon border. Reports had come in of Klingon ships active in the area, and the Yeager was dispatched to investigate. While their scans turned up no sign of ships, they did discover two uncharted systems. He dubbed the lone planet in one of them Miranda, after the character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

When a powerful ion storm erupted within the nebula, the Yeager set down on Miranda to weather the storm. There they encountered an alien race, previously unknown. While the crew helped these Mirandans with the lone trace of technology they seemed to possess – an ancient fusion reactor – Jonathan and the science team performed various tests to the planet itself, gathering what data they could. However, news of disaster pulled the Yeager away before much more could be done.

When word was received of the destruction of Starbase Charlie and Bajor, Jonathan wasn’t sure what to do. It was simply too big to process. But they pressed on to Sierra-18, which was under attack by alien forces. He watched impotently as the starbase was destroyed, and could only hope that Melanie wasn’t aboard. They assisted with search and rescue before retreating to Starbase Delta, but he couldn’t find her. He instead found her name on a casualty listing, and when he called her parents, they had just been informed of her death themselves.

When a reception was being held for the launching of the Chin’toka, Jonathan elected to remain on the Yeager as the watch officer. He was never much for parties, and was still processing Melanie’s death. So when the station put all ships on alert, he took command to oversee launch preparations until the command staff could arrive.

He watched as Chin’toka cut her way out of spacedock, and the captain continued to not be present. Left with no other option, he remained in command as the Yeager joined the other ships present in pursuit of the stolen cruiser. He realized that day that Aitrus had been right to send him out to starship duty, and that maybe there were other options open to him besides just science.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Planetary Sciences, concentration in Terraforming
Academy Minor(s): Astrophysics
Hobbies and Pastimes: constructing model ships, stargazing
Short-Term Goals: serve with distinction in his first posting
Long-Term Goals: Find a way to terraform his planet without destroying the nillimite deposits
Personality: A little too serious for his own good
Sense of Humor: Present, but underdeveloped.
Phobias: Claustrophobia
Likes: Open skies, even though he burns so easily
Dislikes: Silence. Growing up near the refineries was noisy, and he still finds noise comforting.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: False sympathy. Many are insincere about their feelings, and he’s seen it too much to just let it slide.
Bad Habits or Vices: Spends a lot of time alone, rarely getting out and socializing.
Achievements: Is one of the few people to leave Beta Cyprus for good, did so on his merits and not as a last ditch escape
Disappointments: That his father still can’t bear to see him
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Intelligent, resourceful
Weaknesses: Lacks interpersonal skills, though the Academy has forced him to overcome this somewhat.
Fears: That he will lose touch with his entire family, like he did with his father.
Prejudices: Those that won’t look beyond their own horizons to see what could be.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jumpsuits, mostly black or dark red; never wears short-sleeves
Distinguishing Features: Though not obvious, he has a prosthetic right hand.
Pets: None
Friends: Shawn Koltis, age 25; he currently is working the nillimite refineries on Beta Cyprus.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Walking to the Academy shuttle alone. His mother tried to get Mason to come, but he refused. By the time she left, it was too late. She apologized profusely in her first letter (which he got while en route), but it still felt like he’d been abandoned.
Best Time: This one time, he and Shawn had gone exploring through the dome, and made their way to the top of the tallest spire. They were several miles from home, but they didn’t care. Looking out over the nearby mountains and valleys, he felt like he was the king of it all. Of course, their mothers made them regret their indiscretion in wandering so far, but through his teenage years, and especially after he lost his arm, Jonathan would go up there either with his friend or alone, just to think and remember.
Most Crucial Experience: Going into the mines that first time. He’d had a relatively normal life up until then, but that was the day his life changed. Sure, he’d still had issues with his father, and hadn’t been looking forward to dealing with the college situation, but this… this isn’t the way he’d wanted it to go. He lost not only his arm in that mine, but his father as well, even if Mason is still alive.
Role Model: Zefram Cochrane. He wasn’t afraid to try the unknown, and that’s just the spirit that Jonathan needs if he’s going to succeed in Star Fleet.
