Personal History

Juice was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where both of her parents and their families had lived for numerous generations. These numerous generations also worked as police officers in the Brooklyn area, until the federation took over, at which point the family joined up and continued to protect the streets they call home. Both of her parents worked, and still work, as Security officers in the New York area. They met and started out as rivals, but slowly through their mutual love of competition and all things security, they fell in love. They had Juice and then four other children: Adam, Abel, Eve, and Mary.

Juice and her siblings were trained from a very young way in security matters, mostly because it was just how their parents lived. This meant they knew how to shoot guns and fight practically as soon as they could walk. They were learning the lessons of Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” before they even learned to read. They were taught all about weapons throughout their life, and learned to shoot as soon as it was legal for them to learn. Their days were filled with exercises and combat training as much as school. Needless to say, Juice and her siblings were raised tough.

There were instances, however, when Juice’s parents were unavailable. In these instances, her father’s sisters - who lived nearby - would come and care for the children. They had a much more … antiquated… view on things. They were among the minority of people who still believed women should stay home and be ‘womanly.’ Under their influence the girls were secretly guided towards being more stereotypically feminine things, and learned how to be prim and proper young women. When Juice’s mother, a tough New Yorker who strongly believed that women could and should be as tough as any man, eventually discovered these lessons and banned the aunts from the house. However, their work was done. The girls had developed a secret love of girly things.

Interestingly, there was one point in her parent’s upbringing that indicated that they were not the machines they tried to appear to be: her parent’s hypochondriasis. They obsessed about health and not getting sick, eating only the best foods, taking vitamins, and exercising constantly. They felt they needed to stay healthy at all costs. In fact, it was this borderline compulsion that lead to Juice’s nickname. From a very young age, her parents encouraged her to drink orange juice because it was filled with vitamin C which would help her stay healthy. At one point, despite the family’s attempt to stay healthy, everyone became sick - except Juice, who had been the only one drinking orange juice every day. She associated orange juice with this miraculous outcome, and thus began drinking it religiously. Kids at school noticed this, and the nickname ‘Juice’ was born.

When Juice reached the proper age, she was expected to follow in her family’s footsteps and join the federation and apply to be stationed locally. Instead, she surprised everyone - including herself - by joining Star Fleet and signing up to head to the stars. She wanted to get away, feeling suffocated by the expectations from her parents and the community. She wanted to be her own person, to see things no one in her family had seen, and to do things beyond what her family could do. Her mother did not like that, feeling that Juice was abandoning the family and their ancestral territory and obligations, and the two grew apart and eventually became estranged during Juice’s time at the Academy.

Still, Juice felt she had made the right choice.
