Civilian Medical Practitioner

A civilian medical practitioner is an individual who practices medicine but is not a member of Star Fleet or any other military organisation. Though this term is most likely to refer to a doctor, it could equally apply to a medical technician, a nurse, a counselor, or any other occupation which involves treating the sick or wounded.

Though Star Fleet does allow civilian medical practitioners to work in its medical facilities under certain circumstances, these individuals have no authority over Star Fleet officers or enlisted crew members. On rare occasions, civilian medical practitioners can be appointed to positions which grant them a certain level of authority, however.
