Personal History

Most kids these days are born into what most people would call a Utopia, Jake was born in the backwoods of Eastern Kentucky. Sure social issues seemed to have been fixed but sometimes clannish people cling on to their roots, live a rural life, don't take kindly to strangers and it's that type of atmosphere that Jake was raised in. Echo’s of the past, of Coal, moonshine, and a deeply ingrained sense of history that permeates the region. Jake’s family can trace it’s lineage back generations, back before the federation, Star Fleet and space travel. They are a proud people that value privacy and doing things their own way, which goes against the very core of what it means to be a citizen in the current United Earth government.

Jake grew up in this environment, at an early age he expressed an interest in technology, watching his father work on farming equipment, learning to fix and even operate them. But he always had to take a back seat to his older brother, relegated to more physical labor tasks. He was gifted with his father's sturdy build but he also got his mother's intelligence, something his brother lacked. So he spent most of his early childhood learning to work in this environment, never able to really show his full worth for fear he would usurp his brother. He spent days going to the library, finding he had a love of history and military combat. Jake dove head first, finding his aspirations could be fulfilled if he studied hard and worked towards his goal of one day joining starfleet. It was never his intention to bring shame on his family but once they found out his intentions, he was disciplined and forbid from going to the library or accessing the computer at home.

School was difficult, he tended to be better at leading than he did making friends, but he did befriend a young boy around his age by the name of Pete. Pete was in a similar situation, except he seemed to know all the Star ships names, histories, and they spent their days pretending to be captains of the famous ships, namely the Enterprise. Jake tended to be more focused on the capabilities of the ships, flying them, firing phasers and quantum torpedo yields than his friend who preferred to come up with fun and interesting scenarios for them to play. They even got other kids in on the action and created a fully staffed bridge, and a spot in the woods outside of Jake’s house to play and create their away missions.

But as Jake grew into a teenager, his parents started to try and steer him away from his aspirations. Forbidding him from the Library and accessing the computer, and even debating on sending him to a agricultural school. Most of his early years playing with Jake where gone, he was forbid to even say the name Starfleet. During this period he had to stop playing with his best friend, relegated to only being able to talk to him at school. Growing tired of this environment he made plans to run away. If he could just get to his Uncle Mark’s house he could petition him to take him in, and hopefully expand his education to include courses that would make him a great candidate to apply to Starfleet. Jake tried to plot this plan with Pete,who’s parents were equally against his aspirations and where doing the same things to him that Jake was experiencing.

The plan had one flaw, it required Pete to sneak out of his own home and meet up with Jake at their old meeting place. Pete was never gifted nor had the constitution to sneak out, at Jake’s urging he had agreed but his attempt at sneaking out was foiled. Jake waited for hours, before having to leave, and in doing so, left his best friend behind. At the time they had agreed to this possibility, they had agreed that one of them making it out was better than the both of them being caught. But Jake never realized how leaving Pete behind would trigger the worst news he ever received. Jake’s journey wasn’t a simple one, his uncle didn’t live a town over, he’d made preparations, ensured he had the right documents, travel passes and had forged his parents signatures. All things that would have landed him in a lot of trouble if he had been caught before reaching his Uncle, since he lived in San Francisco.

Jake found his Uncle Mark in San Francisco, an Engineer for Starfleets's advanced Ship Building facility. He agreed to take Jake in, as long as he could get his Parents approval. Knowing that it would be a hard sell, he formulated a plan. The plan was simple, he proved to his parents that staying with them was only going to cause them pain. He would continue to run away, or when he reached the age of adulthood leave anyway. His parents did eventually agree to it, disowning him in the process. Pete grew increasingly estranged from his parents and friends, without Jake around to be the muscle he started to fall further into himself. Ending with Pete taking his own life. To this day, Jake can’t say his name, and hasn’t visited his grave. He blamed himself for Pete’s death, because he had left him behind. It ingrained a strong sense of loyalty to him, of being the person who regardless of the situation would put himself into danger to help someone. Whether it’s healthy trait, constantly feeling he has to make up for his friends death has yet to be determined.

He studied, his uncle making sure that he gave him goals to reach for, grilling him on how a Star Ship maneuvers, it’s tactical abilities, using previous declassified variants of Star Ships used in the past. Along with a healthy dose of History lessons, using them as a means to teach him how to think big. When the time came his Uncle along with his teachers wrote recommendations for his application to Join Starfleet.
