Chameloids, are a species of shapeshifers that some believed to be mythical.
History
They originated from a planet not far from the Krynar towards the centre of the galaxy. Just over 1000 years ago as they were first venturing off their homeworld and to other nearby systems they encountered the Krynar. The Krynar were weary of their shapeshifting abilities and as a result decided to exterminate the Chameloid. Only a few thousand Chameloid’s survived and scattered themselves throughout the galaxy.
During the 23rd Century the Federation assumed that they were just a myth until Star Fleet officers James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy met a chameloid named Martia during their imprisonment on the penal colony Rura Penthe in 2293.
Physiology
Aside from their shapeshifting abilities and incredibly long life the Chameloid in its natural form is very similar to a human. The main difference visible is their range of eye colour. Due to their proximity to the center of the galaxy and exposure to the intense radiation the main eye colours are yellow, red, and purple with variations on those.
They are an extremely long lived species with some members having lived over a number of millennia, the oldest recorded before the destruction of their homeworld being over 4,500 years old.
Female Chameloid’s are unable to change their shape while pregnant which has lead to a dramatically decreased gestation period of only 3 months however due to their long lifespan many have chosen not to reproduce until they are ‘middle-aged’, roughly 1,800-2,000 years old.
Shapeshifting Abilities
Unlike the Founders who are able to take any form and take on the full abilities of their new form the Chameloid ability is more akin to a type of camouflage. They are only able to change their look and sound while their internal structure stays relatively the same. They are only able to increase or decrease their height by 1 meter while their eyes are unable to change as they still require them to be able to see.
They are only able to take on the form of someone that they have seen although some have trained over many centuries to be able to take pieces from multiple forms and fuze them together into a single shape however this tends to have the side effect of other humanoids thinking that they look a little ‘off’ and it is hard to maintain that form.
Due to their abilities only being cosmetic, scanners would not identify them as the species in which they were pretending to be for example they would still scan as a female Chameloid and have the same abilities even if they were appearing as a male Klingon.
