Personal History

AJ was supposed to be a twin. However, late in his mother’s pregnancy a rare and unexpected complication arose and his twin died. Initially, AJ’s name was going to be Aaron and his sister’s name Jamie. However, after her death, his parents decided to simply name him “AJ” without either letter actually representing anything. This always led to interesting conversations when people asked what “AJ” stood for.

AJ Chambers had an average childhood. His parents were both members of Star Fleet and were both assigned on Earth. AJ’s father was a lawyer, assigned to the JAG Division and his mother was a Scientist, who worked at a lab in Canada.

Although AJ was an only child, he had several cousins who he was very close to and due to the large size of his extended family, was rarely alone. His young life included a lot of outdoor exploring, trips to the holodeck, and a love-hate relationship with school. AJ was a good student, but only because he studied hard to be so. This was something that would follow him to the Academy.

From his early teenage years, AJ knew he wanted to join Star Fleet. He loved exploring the Canada forest where he lived, and was always beyond excited when he got to take the occasional work trip with his mother or father off planet. The idea of exploring, but in space, fascinated him.

Having two Star Fleet officers as parents helped prepare AJ for his Academy application and after graduating High School, he applied and was accepted to the Security Department. Security, in AJ’s opinion, fit perfectly with his love of exploring without having to put in the class time of being a scientist.

After an uneventful four years at the Academy AJ started his Star Fleet career as a Midshipman on a small vessel. Although it was his love for exploration that drove him to Star Fleet, it seemed war was what the Universe had planned. He remained on that vessel throughout the Romulan War and eventually rose to the rank of Ensign.

He served his ship well, and this was noticed by his superiors. He was soon transferred to the USS Yeager and promoted Lieutenant (JG). AJ stayed on the Yeager for years as a Junior Officer in Security and eventually found himself as the Chief of Security’s right-hand-man. During his time on the Yeager, he also grew very close to a fellow Security Officer named Valan. Valan was a Vulcan, but AJ found him to be very kind and compassionate. The two still remain in contact.

During the final battle of the Krynar War, when the Yeager took damage, AJ suffered severe crushing damage to his left leg. Enough damage that the leg could not be saved. The Chief Medical Officer performed emergency surgery and stabilized AJ, but as soon as they were back to Federation Space, he was transferred to a medical facility on Earth, where they began to use his own DNA to clone a leg.

Medically speaking, the procedure was not insanely difficult. Psychologically speaking, it took AJ awhile to get used to the new leg. He spent months rehabbing his body and although the leg is just as normal and useful as his natural leg was, he still occasionally walks with a bit of a limp when he thinks about his left leg being a fake.

After rehabbing his leg, AJ was assigned to Star Fleet Security Command in (then) Commodore Nicholas Ristone’s office. It was good experience for AJ, and he was promoted to full Lieutenant along the way, but it was not what he had signed up for. Before Ristone left for his promotion as Second Fleet Commander, AJ asked that he help him get back on a vessel. Ristone made no promises, but said he would do what he could.

A few months later, AJ was told to report to Star Base Bravo to await the USS Gettysburg where he would be assigned to the Security Department.
