Personal History

Shryssin was born on Antonax VI and never left the planet prior to entering the Academy. Shortly after his birth he was found to have a terrible degenerative disease known as Bonaath Syndrome, which left him frail and weak for most of his childhood. He became ill with many other diseases during his childhood as a result, but managed to fight them all off with varying success. Shryssin’s parents did all they could to ensure he was happy, indulging his love of reading and history of other species.

He remained bound to his bed for many years of his childhood alone, until he made friends with a Human girl by the name of Samantha. She held the same love of reading and history as he did, and was a few years older than he was. Where he failed to read some advanced writings, she would be there to help him, as well as educate him on the history of Humanity and the Federation. The two spent many years together, and became inseparable. Shryssin always held a secret fear that she only stayed by his side due to his illness, even after he was treated for it.

By the age of 13, medicine had finally arrived that could be used to treat his disorder. Originally, Bonaath Syndrome was impossible to cure due to the fact that it mutated so often between every generation. It was also difficult to detect as it could be passed down for several generations before a new strain cropped up in a child. This made a solid cure impossible to form, both due to lack of information on the disease and it being too hard to track. Only with recent developments in the field of medicine made it possible to formulate a cure based on common elements in every strain of the syndrome.

A full year of intensive, stressful treatments were gone through in order to eliminate the effects of the degenerative disease. He had finally been treated to the point where he could confidently move about and perform more strenuous activity, which he took full advantage of. Samantha had been training in martial arts at the time, and introduced Shryssin to it after the years of him saying he wished to grow stronger and keep people safe.

Shryssin took up boxing shortly after his recovery and physical therapy, and spent much of his time practicing and sparring with others in the colony. This took up much of his time, as did his studies. He constantly battles with his insecurity, compensating for it by spending all of his time honing his skills and knowledge, wanting to appear impeccable in body and mind. His urge to show his strength culminated in him enrolling in the Academy, intent on defending the people of Starfleet in a show of his true strength.

Other than his obsession with strength, he has a passion for cooking. His father instilled this value in him, explaining how food is an insight into all other cultures, which Shryssin took to heart. Shryssin also enjoyed hiking with his dad in the Highlands, until an avalanche occurred and nearly killed them both. His father escaped, but Shryssin was left buried for several hours while his father went for help.

Shryssin was interested in an Andorian woman named Telias, whom he had known since childhood. He and Telias never began a courtship, as his thoughts on himself were too low to attempt it. He believed that when his age of maturity came, he would not be a proper mate for an Andorian woman. Shryssin also believed he would be betraying Samantha, whom he had fallen for over the many years of knowing her. Conflicted with these emotions, he felt he wasn't good enough for either of them and needed to perfect himself before coming back. This was one of the biggest pushes for him to leave his home and join Starfleet, so that he could grow himself as a person, as well as physically.

Shryssin entered the Academy, wanting to get away from the old thoughts that plagued his mind, as well as get out into the world and explore new cultures, some that would allow him to cultivate his strength of his body and mind. Shryssin pursued a career in the Security field both as a means of becoming a guardian to other souls who work towards a greater good, as well as an opportunity to experience things he never would have working on his home world. His father encouraged him to go and find his place in the world, but his mother felt he should stay and wait. He keeps contact with them, sending them weekly letters every week he can.

His time at the Academy was spent studying intently, as he has been so used to doing just that, alone. It wasn’t until after his first year at the Academy that he began getting out and attempting to socialize. He was terrible at speaking to most people, but was friendly enough he was able to make a few friends, whom he did his best to keep close. Fiercely loyal, he did all he could to demonstrate what a strong, useful person he was to them. Shryssin also loved to party as a result, holding small gatherings when he could to demonstrate his cooking prowess.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security
Academy Minor(s): Phaser Systems, and Comms Systems
Hobbies and Pastimes: Painting, Cooking, and Reading. Writing letters to his family and friends.
Short-Term Goals: Finish his latest paintings, as well as make friends who demonstrate equal strength
Long-Term Goals: Become respected for his strength, and eliminate his insecurities
Personality: Respectful and attentive, always willing to listen to others. His mental state is rather flux for an Andorian, bouncing back and forth between his current task and the niggling feeling of weakness which plagues him. This is reflected in rather inconsistent speech, where he may change the subject unexpectedly. Gregarious at heart, loving spending time with others.
Sense of Humor: Doesn’t understand more complex jokes, but is easily amused by simpler jokes. Prefers puns over anything.
Phobias: Large insects are a subject of fear to him, due to the dangerous varieties of spiders and beetles on Antonax VI, which were known to kill with a single bite in serious cases. Small spaces also terrify him, after an avalanche in the highlands near his home nearly killed him when he was buried under rubble.
Likes: Food and cooking, fine arts, history and martial arts, documentaries
Dislikes: Being alone, silence, plays
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Hiking, finds it to be boring. People chewing with their mouth open.
Bad Habits or Vices: Staring and avoiding eye contact entirely. Also overindulges in food at times, which can cause him trouble when he inevitably encounters something he disagrees with.
Achievements: Locally has several medals in boxing, and prides himself on this prowess.
Disappointments: Being unable to assist his father in the family business as a boy, and being rather poor in some scientific fields such as Biology
Illnesses: Bonaath Syndrome, an extremely rare Andorian degenerative disease that wasn't cured until several years ago. Can be eliminated, but a small fraction of people are at risk of it returning, due to the cure being somewhat experimental still. Bonaath syndrome weakens the muscles and causes the body the inability to take in Vitamin D normally. Survivors will typically have pale skin as a result for life, and a slimmer face. Another effect of this syndrome leads to the stomach being sensitive to some foods, varying from subject to subject. His case leading him to have an intolerance to Bell peppers, among other things.
Strengths: Excels in close combat, both armed and unarmed. Well studied in history of Klingon, Human, and several other ‘violent’ species’ histories. Great listener
Weaknesses: Poor public speaker, and has a tendency to change subject. Socially awkward in general. Easily angered when questioning his strength in other areas, being a sensitive subject to him.
Fears: Disappointing his friends, being proven he is weak, losing his family, being alone. Insects and several childhood bullies. Small spaces.
Prejudices: Feels that People should always be working on something, or else you are lazy. Finds Vulcans incredibly boring, even those who share his interests.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Shryssin prefers more plain, darker toned clothings. Tight fitting, simple suits are his primary choice of fashion. Deeper greys, black, or occasionally deeper shades of purple.
Distinguishing Features: Has no unique facial features that distinguish him any more than his extremely pale complexion, and absent-minded expression.
Pets: Rhyssal, a Redbat that lived on the Antonaxian Lodge’s local lands. All members of the Lodge took care of Redbats, but Rhyssal was cared for the most and it’s offspring were never used for food. Shryss spent much of his time as a young boy observing and playing with Rhyssal. The Redbat stays home on the Lodge’s lands.
Friends: Shryssin’s closest friend is a girl he met on Antonax in his childhood. Samantha Childs, a Human girl a few years older than he was. Samantha lived close to the Lodge, where her family maintained a farm nearby. Samantha, knowing of Shryss’ numerous shortcomings in term of health, spent a lot of time with him to alleviate his sadness. Samantha taught him of many other cultures, especially those of Humanity and the proud cultures of Klingons.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Being lost in the highlands near his home, and becoming stuck under piles of rocks in an avalanche which broke several of his bones,as well as required him to be rescued.
Best Time: Spending time with Samantha around her family, who welcomed him and further encouraged him towards his studies. This experience giving him much inspiration and courage to make friends. One of the first times he had experienced a social gathering of any sort outside of his home.
Most Crucial Experience: Finally eliminating his disease, which allowed him to live his life to the fullest, as well as go out into the world. Shortly after, learning of his aptitude in combat and coming out of his shell.
Role Model: His father, who taught him many of the values he holds to this day. A hard worker, and even stronger man than most other people he’s known in both will and physical state. Looks up to him for his compassion and work ethic, knowing that work has to be done no matter how hard it is.
