Personal History

Tom was born on the outskirts of London, England to Juliet and Henry. As their first child, they were overly – cautious with him, and as such, Tom was quite shy and found it hard to make friends. This changed on his first day of school where he met Mark. Mark was crucial in changing this side of Tom. He actively encouraged him to come out after school, whether it was to explore the surrounding area, or just to play in the street. It was because of Mark’s influence, that Tom gained the confidence of which he is so proud of today.

For Tom’s twelfth birthday, his father bought him a book, ‘The History of Star Fleet’, and whilst it was certainly not the best written book Tom would ever read, nor particularly detailed in its covering of the subject; the book was crucial in lighting a spark inside Tom, a spark to find out more about Star Fleet, and one day, though he did not yet know it, join up.

This was confirmed when he turned 14 and his school actually went on a school trip to the academy, complete with a tour, and the opportunity to fire a phaser. This piqued Tom’s interest, as he had read about these weapons in ‘The History of Star Fleet’ and the opportunity to fire one, albeit in a completely controlled situation, was exhilarating. He felt the blood pounding in his ears as he squeezed off shot after shot after shot.

His interest in security came about the next year. Jake was the bully of the school, and regularly pushed the younger children around, with very little regard for others. He was over 6 ft despite only being 15, and played rugby for the school, so was very well built. Apart from those too scared to say anything, most people openly despised him. Tom often saw Jake hitting other kids, barging them out of the way, and taking their stuff, but never actually did anything, and never stood up. However, when Tom was 15, this was about to change. He’d had a particularly bad day, woken up in a terrible mood, and had a flaming row with his mother about being allowed to see Mark that evening, she wasn’t letting him because of a family dinner that night. Once getting to school, Mark didn’t appreciate being cancelled on, and Tom was faced with another full – scale argument, this time with his best friend. As Tom was not in the best of moods, seeing Jake up to his usual bullying, this time in the form of shoving another kid into a bin full of rubbish, did nothing to help Tom’s horrible mood. He’d decided he’d had enough. He calmly put his bag on the ground, walked up to Jake, and shoved him to the ground. Without even thinking about what he was doing, he quickly pulled Jake’s arms behind his back so he couldn’t retaliate, and promptly sat on him. Whilst Tom now looks back on this and laughs about his ridiculously childish and crude methods, this event was crucial in setting Tom on the path towards security and protecting people.

He began to study hard in school, and while he was no child prodigy, he did better than average and was soon getting comfortable grades, and was a firm favourite amongst fellow pupils and teachers alike. It was round this time, the age of 16 or so, that he met Olivia. Olivia and he were put together as lab partners in chemistry and hit it off straight away. He still remembers her walking into labs that morning, and exactly what clothes she was wearing, from the necklace around her neck, to the trainers on her feet. In quieter moments, he likes to let his mind wander back to that day.

Olivia and Tom started to see each other and soon became very serious. Towards the end of high school, Tom was really considering Star Fleet, that spark inside him from his father’s book lighting up again. However, he didn’t want to leave Olivia behind and was willing to give it all up for her. They had a picnic together, and that was when Tom knew that he and Olivia would be together and happy forever. The light was shining through the trees just right, and there was a light zephyr blowing across the field just right. Tom swallowed his nerves, and got down on one knee and proposed, telling Olivia how much she meant to him, and how they belonged together. This was when something unexpected happened. This was when Olivia said no…

She admitted to not being ready to settle down, and whilst she definitely loved Tom, she wanted to experience more of the world, and that she was too young to have herself locked down, and worse than that, she’d been thinking about ending it for quite a while now. As she stood up and walked off, Tom watched her go, feelings of despair rising within him. He made the lonely journey home feeling terrible, and remained so for a few weeks. One otherwise typical day, a couple of weeks away from graduation, the spark that was within Tom came to the forefront, he realised that he could know achieve his dreams and join Star Fleet. Yes, it was true that he was incredibly saddened by losing Olivia, but he now saw it as a great opportunity to get all he had ever wanted.

He applied that very evening.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security, Weapons Training and Navigation
Academy Minor(s): Tactics, Diplomacy and Molecular Biology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Reading is Tom's one luxury that allows him to escape every once in a while.
Short-Term Goals: To become a COS and to be respected and admired by those he works with.
Long-Term Goals: To have a long and illustrious career on a ship before taking a deck job back home.
Personality: Tom has a very outgoing personality. Whilst he can never be described as being the life and sould of a party, he is a very confident individual, and finds talking to new people easy. He can occasionally get very nervous in high pressure situations.
Sense of Humor: Tom's sense of humour is what keeps him sane. It is very dry and some might say dark. While he may not outwardly laugh at something, that doesn't mean it didn't amuse him.
Phobias: Doctors, if he is injured, it is going to take a lot for Tom to seek help.
Likes: Being given something to do, being active, keeping fit.
Dislikes: Boredom, ambiguous orders
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who are unsure, people who waste time.
Achievements: Captained his school debating team, advanced certificate in Weapons Training
Disappointments: Having to retake his public speaking exam several times.
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Analysing situations and acting quickly.
Weaknesses: Often acting in too serious a manner, Tom can come across as cold and unhelpful, when he means well.
Fears: Freezing at a crucial moment, screwing up.
Prejudices: None
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jeans/tacksuit trousers with a light, pastel t-shirt
Distinguishing Features: A small mole on the back of his right hand, just about the second knuckle. Although he has often been offered to have it removed, Tom feels that it makes up part of who he is, and is and is now reluctant to see it go.
Pets: One rabbit named Milo. Milo is a house rabbit who behaves like a cat and hates being cooped up in a hutch. He is black with grey patches. As much as Tom wanted to bring Milo onboard with him, he knew that a rabbit such as Milo would not be too happy on a ship, so he is at home waiting for him.
Friends: Mark. Mark and Tom met first day of school and have remained firm friends ever since. It would be a lie to say that there hadn’t been a few arguments and fall outs along the way, but Mark has always been there for Tom, and Tom for Mark.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Saying goodbye to family for academy, knowing that Georgia will barely remember him.
Best Time: His last picnic with Olivia, while they were still happy.
Most Crucial Experience: Firing a phaser at a school outing to the academy, standing up to Jake at school
Role Model: His mother for giving him a stable upbringing, and the strength to apply.
