Lineage

Dedication Plaque

The USS Gettysburg was named for The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. Fought at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the Eastern Theater of the War, the battle raged from July 1st through 3rd, 1863. Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Pennsylvania for both strategic and logistical reasons, in this campaign, which he hoped would end the War. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, approximately 75,000 men, encountered the Union Army of the Potomac, approximately 90,000 strong, under Major General George G. Meade on the outskirts of Gettysburg on July 1st. In a battle of considerable movement, Advance forces of Lee’s Army (Lt. General A.P. Hill’s and Lt. General Richard S. Ewell’s Corps) tested first the Union right (July 1st), engaging Union Cavalry and Infantry under Brigadier General John Buford, Major General John F. Reynolds (1st Corps), and Major General Oliver Howard (11th Corps). Then, in an assault led by Lt. General James Longstreet’s Second Corp (Major General John B. Hood's and Major General Lafayette McLaw's Divisions), the Union left (July 2nd). While some area's, such as the Peach Orchard were taken, this attacks main focus, on the Union Held High Ground, including Little Round Top, was repulsed by forces such as Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain's Maine Regiment. On July 3rd, Major General George E. Pickett (along with Major General Isaac R. Trimble and Brigadier General J. Johnston Pettigrew, of A.P. Hill's Corps) led perhaps the most famous charge in American military history against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. Only 5,000 of this original force of 15,000 survived the repulse. This Three-day struggle is considered the turning point in the Eastern Theater of the War.

History

The Gettysburg was given instructions to salvage a Romulan Warbird previously disabled by the USS Dauntless before heading out to investigate the Dead Zone - a region of space along the Romulan Border that remained unoccupied. The objective to work out why the Romulan Star Empire had not made use of the region and whether it was clear for Starfleet to take over. Attempts to salvage the Warbird were unsuccessful, the ship was not as badly damaged as reported and nothing was salvaged before the ship was programmed to self-destruct. Resuming their mission, the Gettysburg set a course for the Dead Zone, encountering a Romulan Patrol along the way consisting of two Warbirds. Using the Sheridan Nebula as a screen, the Patrol was defeated and a computer course laid in for a Romulan Outpost with the intention of retrieving a Federation Data Packet. An Away Team was beamed down to the Outpost, including the Captain who was separated from the rest of the team shortly after their arrival. First Officer McCullough made attempts to rescue the Away Team and their Captain but was killed in the process and a large portion of senior staff injured. The Captain returned to the ship with Lt. Commander Samantha Aster, whom had been kidnapped and detained in Romulan Holding Cells during a previous mission. The Gettysburg set a course for Federation Space, responding to a distress call from the USS Titan and USS Philadelphia along the way but even with the help of the Gettysburg, the Romulan Fleet were too strong - it wasn't until the arrival of the USS Republic that victory was achieved.

With Starbase 1 destroyed after a Borg Attack and the Armageddon Directive initiated by Fleet Admiral Beckett, the USS Gettysburg is given the special assignment of travelling back in time to prevent or at least neutralise the Borg Attack. The Science Department on board made calculations for the time travel into the past while the ship was detected by the Borg that had taken over Sector 001. Going to time-warp in an effort to get away quickly, the Borg somehow managed to intercept and knock the Gettysburg off course, altering their preset calculations and instead taking them 12 years in the future - to a future where the Borg had won. The crew encountered their assimilated Borg counterparts who had been cut off from the Collective. When the Borg had intercepted their time-warp, two alternate versions of the Gettysburg were created - one that travelled 12 years in the future and another that was assimilated. Working together to find a way back to their own time to prevent this timeline from happening again, the Gettysburg crew travelled back along with their Borg counterparts, not expecting them to survive the journey and instead cease to exist. However, upon their arrival, their counterparts turned on them and assimilated their crew, bringing things full-circle. The Captain, knowing he had to break the loop somehow, killed the Borg Queen who was also the assimilated version of his own wife. This caused the rest of the Borg counterparts to fade from existence and bring an end to the timeline. The ship returned to Federation Space where the destroyed Starbase 1 had been replaced by Starbase Alpha.

With news of the USS Pandora without a trace, the USS Gettysburg is sent out to look for her and find out how and why she disappeared. Setting a course for the Pandora’s last coordinates found the ship dead in space. Sending an Away Team to investigate, the crew of the Gettysburg, an alien artefact was found in the cargo bay of the Pandora that housed a race of energy beings known as the Ym. Two entities managed to find their way aboard the Gettysburg, one of which took control of the ship and warped away for a short time before returning - with a Cardassian shuttlecraft beamed aboard and it’s Captain still alive. The aliens used the Gettysburg to fire upon the Pandora. With the crew of the Gettysburg still on board being hijacked by the aliens, they were ordered to evacuate the saucer section of the ship and take command of the separated stardrive section - free of alien control. After communicating telepathically with the alien entity, Counselor Tey managed to convince the entity to return to the artefact which was then beamed into space. Once the stardrive and saucer sections were rejoined, the Gettysburg and the Pandora returned home.

The Gettysburg was dispatched on a standard patrol mission of the Romulan Neutral Zone. During the patrol, a distress call was received from Outpost 10, a listening post along the Federation/Romulan Neutral Zone declaring that a large asteroid was on a collision course for the station. Unable to move the station fast enough without causing irreparable damage, a team was sent to download valuable information from the outpost as well as make attempts at reinforcing the station. Another team was sent to investigate the asteroid and was later followed by a security team after the shuttle crashed on the surface of the asteroid but something took control of the second runabout and landed it on the surface of the asteroid close to the first shuttle. Upon further investigation, an android that confirmed that it was responsible for both shuttles landing on the surface as he was suspicious of their intentions. The android provided information on the asteroid interior that housed several lifeforms, all experiencing radiation sickness due to a leak originating from an Engineering section within the asteroid. Finding no way to fix the leak, the occupants of the asteroid, including the android, were eventually evacuated from the asteroid with the intention of finding a suitable planet.

With a suspicious build up of Romulan forces along the border with Federation Space, the Gettysburg is called to a strategy meeting and to rendezvous with a large number of ships at Starbase 157. Following orders to plan a defence against Romulan attacks, the Gettysburg waited for the inevitable war. The first move was an attack by the Romulans that neutralised Starbase 234 alongside a series of impulsive attacks on ships stationed around Starbase 157. It wasn't long before all-out battle commenced with great losses on either side. When the Gettysburg was hijacked by Tal'Shiar operatives and the command crew held within the Brig, it seemed like all hope for victory had been lost but then something strange happened. Time reset itself. It seemed that the high count of warp cores destroyed within such a small area of space, disrupted the space-time continuum and warping the timeline enough to reset time back to the middle of the war. The Gettysburg still under Starfleet control. The battle continued until the Romulans retreated, likely in an attempt to avoid time repeating itself in an endless loop. Starbase 157 was badly damaged as a result of the battle and was rebuilt as an Immense class base that became known as Starbase Delta.

USS Gettysburg was dispatched to system Nehru IV to investigate and halt production of a suspected bioweapon manufacturing operation being performed by Federation scientists. Along the way, the Commanding Officer departed for a meeting on the surface of Risa. Shortly after his departure, the Gettysburg received orders to travel to the Nehru System immediately in order to investigate the possibility that they were creating a biological weapon targeted to Romulans. With further orders to apprehend the head researcher, Doctor Derricote, and destroy her laboratory. The First Officer took command and complied. Upon arrival at the Nehru system, an away team led by Reynolds was sent to collect Doctor Derricote for questioning. They were successful in locating Derricote but were stung by bees during the pick up. This would later progress into a ship-wide virus rapidly spread among the crew and infecting them. Quarantine was initiated aboard the ship. Sickbay later reported that infected crew members were spontaneously turning into giant bees and attacking medical staff and other patients. A Tal'Shiar vessel appeared, demanding data, samples and the people responsible for implementing the virus. After being denied this request, they fired upon the facility destroying the upper levels before cloaking and departing the system leaving the Gettysburg to deal with their infected alone. Doctors managed to work out a method of resequencing the DNA of those in the early stages of the virus but sadly, those who had progressed into final stages were incurable. With approximately 600 people infected and beyond hope of reversing the infection and no way of containing them once they mutated into giant killer bees, the Commanding Officer ordered them to be grouped in the Cargo Bay before using a toxic gas to end their lives. The Gettysburg returned home with a loss of one quarter of their crew.

USS Gettysburg is sent into Romulan space to retrieve an intelligence drone which has gone missing. When she arrives, she encounters a black nebula with odd readings. Near this nebula she is attacked by two Romulan heavy cruisers and one warbird. While successful in destroying the Romulan flotilla (mostly by sheer luck and suicidal tactics), the Gettysburg herself was badly damaged. The result of the detonating quantum singularities aggravated a black star within the nebula and caused a space-time rift to open. This rift had an enormous subspace distortion and gravity well which pulled in most of the debris, plus the Gettysburg; and the Apparition and her team who were aboard the warbird salvaging the cloaking device. The trip through the rift caused enormous damage to the ship, which will require significant repairs. Also two thirds of the crew were lost between the battle and the rift passage. The Gettysburg has now found herself in a strange place, apparently within the Milky Way galaxy, but in a different time--the 51st century, and possibly a different reality from before. Rear Admiral Grant, during a meeting at the end of the mission, announced that there was an Intelligence team aboard the Gettysburg and introduced some of the members of the team.

Finding herself trapped in an alternative universe almost 3,000 years in the the future, the crew of the USS Gettysburg makes attempts at negotiating with natives of the their location in an effort of finding a way home. They come into contact with a ship that classes itself to be part of the Grand Flammarions - they confirm that the Gettysburg has indeed travelled to the 51st Century. The crew of the Gettysburg, under the command of the First Officer, are taken to a Grand Flammarion base where to engage in formal first contact procedures with the High Executive before they agree to offer assistance. During negotiations, the High Executive received word that a Terran Empire was en route with a fleet of ships, most likely in response to the presence of the Gettysburg crew - she agrees to repair and restock the Gettysburg as long as they hide from the Terran Empire. Several days later, the Gettysburg rendezvous’ with its Commanding Officer who was searching for methods that could help the ship return to its own space - it isn’t long after this that the Gettysburg is successful in returning home. Upon their arrival, they are met with three Romulan ships, including the Shadowhawk except the war with the Romulans has supposedly ended barring a few Romulan forces. Fighting alongside the Shadowhawk, the Gettysburg is successful in defeating one of the opposing Romulan ships and sending the other away.

Following the destruction of the USS Avenger at the hands of a rogue Gettysburg, the Avenger crew was transferred to the Gettysburg. During the Gettysburg's security check and refit, the senior members of the Gettysburg crew were assigned to complete S.E.R.E. training on Ryla, a real world survival training exercise designed to pit the crew against marines. However, during the training, there was an incursion by mercenaries onto Ryla, which threatened marine and Starfleet alike. The teams were forced to band together to fight back and escape Ryla.
