A carrier wave is a waveform of any type, length and dimension that can transmit anything, such as data, energy or particles.

In order to carry such information, energy or matter, the waveform is modulated with a signal, causing the frequency of the wave to become higher.

These waves are integral in transporter systems, as they are what allows the transporter to perform the actual act of moving one person or object to another place.

The transporter carrier wave is a subspace signal through which a transporter beam was transmitted.
