Caratas IV is a Class M planet within Federation space and home to a species of intelligent ursines. The Caratasians possess stone-age technology and have been notably hostile to any outsiders they have encountered. All contact with the species is discouraged, though several scientific studies have been carried out.
The planet is also home to a large centipede-like creature known to bury itself in snow.
In 2412, the USS Columbia was sent to Caratas IV to search for a missing Star Fleet Special Operations Command team believed to have put down on the planet while being attacked by enemy Inquisition vessels. (Hide and Seek)
