The Brunali are an agricultural species whose homeworld lies at the mouth of a Borg transwarp conduit in the Delta Quadrant. Once an advanced space-faring civilization, frequent and devastating attacks by the Borg Collective left the planet in ruins, leaving a few enclaves scattered in the northern continent with populations of less than 10,000. In order to prevent further Borg attacks, the surviving Brunali returned to a low-tech state; any technology they do use is kept hidden in the hope that any passing Borg vessels will not be interested and simply pass by. The Borg designation for Brunali is Species 2461.

The Brunali are skilled in genetics, and the use this as a tool against the Borg. They genetically engineered a child named Icheb with anti-Borg pathogens, whom they sent in a small ship towards the Borg transwarp conduit. A passing Borg vessel assimilated Icheb and the virus was spread throughout the Borg cube, destroying all the drones on board with the exception of several Borg children left in maturation chambers, including Icheb. They were rescued by the USS Voyager.

In 2376, Voyager made contact with the Brunali homeworld, intending to reunite Icheb with his parents, Yifay and Leucon, unaware of what they had done. Icheb's parents, however, once again hoped they could use him to destroy the Borg and sent him off to the conduit for a second time. Voyager's crew rescued Icheb on this occasion and left the planet behind.
