Personal History

Mathew had been serving his first tour on the USS Enid as an Engineering Officer when he was told about his older sister and friend Allie dying while aboard the USS Gettysburg. Not much information was given to him about what happened and he took it upon himself to investigate further. Unfortunately, his research turned up nothing. All he found was the same type of story that his family was given when the Briggs’ eldest child, Mallory, a Star Fleet Science Officer had died in an accident in the ship's lab, and in fact he found much less than that about Allie’s death. Mathew had grown closer to Allie after Mallory’s death, as they had both been attending the Academy then. They helped each other through that difficult time. Allie more than once told him it was because of him that she finished the Academy, as she never accepted the reason given for Mallory’s death.

No matter what Mathew did, he developed anger for the Federation. He never understood why he or his family could not know what happened. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became and worked on breaking into Federation Security Computers. His free time was spent researching what he would need to know, which isolated him from others. Counselors worried about Mathew and implemented mandatory counseling sessions. He did what was asked, but wasn’t totally truthful with them.

Once the USS Enid returned from being away on a mission, they were released on leave. Mathew’s anger had consumed him and he stole a private vessel, not thinking straight. Since this was not part of his original plan, he made his way to Earth quickly, hiding out. Unfortunately, he was discovered soon and found himself taken to a brig at Star Fleet HQ.

It seemed that his plans and own research had sparked some interest from a Captain Smith, who offered Mathew a deal to get out from under the charges against him. Mathew found himself agreeing to work for this man in Star Fleet Intelligence to get away from the many charges facing him. He was delivered to an odd station and met with two other men, both of which seemed to have extra talents that a Federation officer didn’t usually have. After an odd device was painfully inserted into Mathew’s head, Buck was put in charge of Mathew’s training.

The physical training was not difficult for Mathew; however, the emotional training that Buck put him through was over the top. Buck was patient with him though, and for all that he did to test Mathew, he also supported him as well. After training, Buck and Mathew were sent on a mission and Buck seemed to look after Mathew more than what seemed normal, which bothered Mathew at first, but soon began to trust and look up to Buck. After an unsuccessful mission, they all finally returned. Mathew was sent to space station Delta where he served under Commodore Smith.

He had a lot of time on his hands to think about his lost sister and things he’d learned. He continued to attend counseling sessions to help deal with the deaths of his sisters as well as to come up with some solutions for his temper. To help keep his mind off some things, he decided to further his education. This would also hopefully keep him out of trouble as well. Determining what to study wasn’t easy as he’d always enjoyed the computer science area. However after discussions with others, he chose an area that he knew some about: tactical. Mathew enjoyed getting back into learning something new, feeling almost like he was in the Academy again. He did well in courses as he threw himself fully into studying. He began courses with the idea of keeping busy, but the further along he became, he convinced this would revitalize himself in the Star Fleet. He took advantage of his time on Delta, using his free time to learn from tactical officers on board.

Finally, Mathew felt ready to seek a ship placement, interviewing for a placement on the Copernicus. Surprisingly, he was offered the Chief Tactical Officer position. It shocked him into thinking about the decision longer than most officers would take, but in the end, he finally decided to take it.

He still wonders what happened to his friend and mentor (Buck), but has had no luck in finding him. He has recently been informed that his sister Allie, whom he thought was dead, was found alive.
