The Benzites are a species of humanoids native to Benzar, a warp-capable Federation planet.
Physiology
Benzites are characterized by smooth, hairless, blue or green skin, with a hue that varies from person to person. A thick protrusion of their skull extends down over the face, displaying a prominent nasal lobe and brow. Two facial tendrils droop down from above the upper lip. They are unable to breathe a standard oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere, and as of the 2260s, were required to wear a respiration device in those environments. The use of such devices was slowly phased out by the 2270s, though some Benzites preferred the standard adaptable device well into the 2280s.
Benzites have two opposable thumbs on each hand, a feature which easily sets them apart from other blue- or green-hued species, such as Bolians, Andorians, or Orions.
Benzites are known to develop from a series of large "geostructures": those from the same geostructure naturally look similar. Benzites within these geostructures have the inherent ability to distinguish each other, all of whom may otherwise appear identical to outsiders.
History and Society
Benzite contact with the Federation was limited prior to the 24th century, but by 2364, contact had widened. Mordock, creator of the 'Mordock Strategy,' became the first Benzite to join Star Fleet Academy.
Relations and cooperation between the Benzites and the Federation continued to expand, possibly as a prelude toward Benzar and its people joining the Federation. Officer exchange programs were initiated, allowing Star Fleet officers to serve on Benzite ships, and vice versa, in order to promote better understanding of the different cultures, regulations, and behaviors. Other Benzites began to enroll in the Academy, becoming Starfleet Officers before their planet officially joined the Federation.
One Benzite regulation states that no officer on a Benzite ship is to report any unexplained occurrence without first providing a full analysis and solution.
Benzites are known to be highly meticulous, a characteristic that is reflected in their regulations as well as their behavior.
In 2374, during the Dominion War, Benzar was captured by Dominion and Cardassian forces. It was later liberated by Romulans, acting as part of the Federation Alliance.
