Personal HistoryToral Bek was born on Deep Space 9 on Stardate 18810.03 to Lucy Wright, a human Star Fleet officer, and Toral Ren, a member of the Bajoran Provisional Government. He spent most of his early childhood traveling between Deep Space 9 and Bajor.
His father tried to shield Bek form the stories of the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor while he was a child, instead opting to explain Bajor’s rich cultural and scientific history. Hearing about the ancient Bajoran solar-powered ships was instrumental in his decision to join Star Fleet.
Bek did ultimately learn about the brutality of the Cardassians when the RDC attacked Deep Space 9 in the opening parts of the First General War. Bek was caught on the station with his mother, who was serving there at the time. She was hit with plasma fire while trying to get him to one of the emergency shelters. His mother ultimately recovered from her injuries and retired from Star Fleet after the war ended.
As he grew up, his father taught Bek the importance of hard work and self-reliance. Despite his wife’s protest, Ren got his son a job bussing tables at Quark’s. “It’s either that, or working the farm,” his father told him. While he worked, he studied for the Star Fleet Academy entrance exam. Unfortunately, that left little time for socializing with friends.
Having never had much time growing up to socialize with friends made the transition to Earth and Star Fleet Academy all the more difficult. Fortunately, he met his best friend, Kelis, at the Academy. Kelis introducted Toral to Andorian battle tactics and convinced Toral to choose a career path in Tactical.
