Personal History

Cornelius’ early life is largely unknown, even to him. He was found wandering the streets of New Berlin on Luna with a head wound when he was five years old by officers from the local public safety office. He had no memory of who he was or of any time of his life prior to waking up in an alley in the city and investigators from the public safety office could find no record of him nor could they find a DNA match in the city’s database. With no other alternatives and no family that could be found, Cornelius was turned over to the local orphanage. He constantly hoped to be adopted while he was there, but it seemed people had no desire for an older child; they all wanted infants to raise as their own. As the years progressed adoption became more and more unlikely and he finally gave up hope all together.

His life wasn’t unpleasant; the orphanage provided him with his basic needs and saw to it that he received the same education as every Federation child. His first inkling of his true calling came when he was introduced to Sun Tzu’s Art of War in his ancient literature class in high school. Cornelius was entranced by the simple elegance of military tactics and soon spent all of his free time studying the greatest tacticians and their battles, from Alexander the Great of ancient Earth to Kang of the Klingon Empire. When he came of age he applied to Star Fleet Academy but was rejected on three separate occasions. While some might have given up, Cornelius did not, his childhood had been full of disappointment and he’d learned to use it to motivate himself. Instead of joining Star Fleet via the Academy, he enlisted and to his delight was assigned to Tactical. He spent several years in the fleet with duties ranging from shuttle piloting and operations to astrogation and weapons management and though his performance wasn’t stellar it wasn’t bad either, many of his superiors noted his versatility and willingness to take on new tasks.

Just before the onset of the Second Federation/Romulan war Cornelius had achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and was serving aboard Starbase One as a defense analyst. It was here that he met his wife, the Captain of a civilian trade freighter that regularly passed through the station. For both of them it was love at first sight and a few months later they were married. The next six months were the happiest of his life, each day with Jena was better than the last. She still ran cargo with her freighter, but she usually remained close to the Starbase and stayed there often. As the war progressed Cornelius continued to provide tactical analysis for the fleets and asked Jena to stop making runs for a while. He figured it would be safer for her if she remained on the Starbase with him. She protested of course, but eventually conceded when he pointed out that it would be less risky for her crew if they took some time off. It was the worst possible thing he could have done, a month later the Romulans launched their attack on the Starbase and then in the midst of the battle the Borg interceded and began to destroy everything in the system. Cornelius was at his station at the time and Jena was in their quarters, the station withstood barrage after barrage of weapons fire but when the Borg showed up the order was given to evacuate. He ran to the habitat section but an explosion rocked the corridor and a large piece of tritanium slammed into his leg, severing it just below the knee. A couple of Security officers grabbed him and pulled him along with them to a departing runabout, but he fought them the whole way, his sole thought was of getting to his wife. He was raving by the time the runabout launched, the shock of his wound and lost blood as well as concern for his wife caused him to become violent to the point a medic had to sedate him.

He awoke a six days later aboard a Science Cruiser that had been pressed into service as a medical ship. His first thought was of his wife and when he finally got his hands on the reports he saw that she wasn’t listed among the survivors. Later Cornelius would discover that the explosion that robbed him of his leg likely saved his life; the habitat section had suffered a hull breach and the emergency force fields had failed to come online, he would have made it to his wife only to suffer the same cold fate as she had. He was wracked with survivor’s guilt as well as a feeling of uselessness thanks to his lost leg. Even after his leg was replaced he still felt like an invalid, especially since slight nerve damage prevented him from gaining full use of it and left him with a slight limp. Suicide crossed his mind often, and he was placed on extended leave pending a psychiatric evaluation. Luck was with him when the evaluation board met with him, two of the officers on the board were people he’d served with in the past and though they couldn’t justify returning him to active duty given his mental state they did manage to get him approved for a position as an instructor at the Academy citing his deep grasp of starship and fleet tactics.

Personality Profile

Hobbies and Pastimes: To relax he enjoys scuba diving, the solitude of the deep ocean is his escape.
Short-Term Goals: Each day is the accomplishment of a goal for him, simply living without Jena, even years later, is a challenge that he often comes close to failing
Long-Term Goals: He’s content in his current position in life, not happy, but content and that’s enough for him. He tries not to think about the future because it only brings back painful memories of what he’d planned with his wife
Personality: Since the destruction of Starbase One and the loss of his wife the only way to describe Cornelius is as a loner. He keeps to himself, rarely talking to others outside of his duties as an instructor much less forming friendships of any kind.
Sense of Humor: Non-Existent, he finds little funny
Likes: He still enjoys studying the tactics of the great minds of the past.
Dislikes: Anything to do with Romulans. While he blames himself for his wife’s death, he sees them as the root cause of the decision that led to her end
Distinguishing Features: Noticeable limp, Mechanical right leg replacement
