Personal History

Amalek Barrett was born on the Mars Colony but moved to the North American Continent on Earth when he was five. His father was a Commander in Star Fleet and first officer of the USS Gemini. Amalek was always fascinated by space travel and possessed many toy models of ships when he was young. His father's ship undertook a mission to investigate a Nebula that was and is jettisoning anti-matter into space sporadically. The Gemini went missing when Amalek was 13. Everyone assumes the crew to be dead, but with no ship or body remains found, Amalek doesn't believe that they're dead. There were two small ships that went in to look for the ship or the remains of the ship but they, too, disappeared. Star Fleet has since declared the Nebula off-limits. Because of the Gemini Incident, his mother was furious with him when he applied for Star Fleet Academy. But it didn't stop him. Just before he left for the academy, his sister graduated from a civilian medical school.

Life at the academy was rough at first for Amalek. His very first test in Warp Theory, he failed miserably. He learned to pick up the pace academically but he was also lacking physically at first. Frankly he was surprised that he was accepted, he assumed it had a lot to do with his father. While he was never a 'wimp' strength was not something that he possessed. He had a timid personality and little interest in sports. He was something of a loner. He had close friends of course, but never very many, he never believed they were worth the effort and would often opt to be on his own. Slowly he became accustomed to academy life and ended up doing very well. He had one relationship with a girl named Jane who was later expelled from the academy. It was a relatively long-lived relationship but ended abruptly when Amalek caught her red-handed, so to speak, with another. The final exam, though it didn't go quite as smoothly as he had hoped (his Galaxy Class ship experienced a Warp Core breach), turned out okay in the end. In his opinion, Star Fleet Academy was the greatest thing that ever happened to him, he is stronger now and a great fighter, since he ended up taking a minor in Security. He is still a little nervous but his personality is much improved, and he is well over Jane.

He soon received his first assignment to the Columbus Scout USS Yeager, SC-8018, a posting he had originally been disappointed with. However, he rapidly became quite accustomed to it and called it home. Under Captain Luke Johnson, he undertook his very first mission as a Tactical officer, pursuing some pirates. The ship was invaded, particularly jarring for the young officer. The pirates were eventually repelled, but Captain Johnson was kidnapped. The next mission was to search for their Captain which entailed pulling Captain Joseph Valiant, hero of the Borg Conflict, out of retirement. This Captain was rather aloof and intimidating, but it was under him that Amalek has served most of his career. After successfully tracking down the pirates, Valiant and the crew discovered that Johnson had not been kidnapped, but had defected. There was a battle with the pirate carrier, a battle in which the Yeager was greatly outclassed. The battle ended with the carrier destroyed, the Yeager crippled, and Johnson escaped. This mission devastated Amalek, and shaped much of his future demeanor. He is still pleasant, but ever since that day he has been significantly more cynical and sarcastic regarding problems encountered on missions. At least that’s what he attributes it to. (See: Yeager:First Mission - Hidden Agenda)

For the next several years he served several missions for the Yeager, everything from a large-scale battle Orion pirates (An impressive display of Amalek’s improvement as a tactical officer to diplomacy to crash landing on a planet. Throughout these missions Amalek rose to Chief Tactical Officer and developed relationships he still holds as pivotal in his development as an officer. The Klingon Balak, Kathy Obuszewski, Alexis Tregelen, Nathan May, Captain Valiant, Virginia Harrison-Black and many others, included all those that served under him.

The Yeager’s final mission involved seeking to stop Johnson once and for all; he had been tracked to an abandoned space station. They attacked and successfully retook the station and captured Johnson. After this Amalek met with the man for him he had borne so much hatred. They had a long conversation, discussing the traitors motives, thoughts, and Amalek’s need for (verbal, at least) revenge. Johnson’s piece was disturbingly calm and self-righteous. He explained to Amalek Starfleet’s misdeeds, particularly during the Borg Conflict, abandoning member planets in favor of protecting Earth. Amalek refused to buy into Johnson’s line of thinking. But once again this man represented a major moment in the tactical officer’s life. Amalek has never quite reconciled what Johnson said with his own opinion of Starfleet, and the traitor escaped once again soon after.

Amalek then transferred with most of the Yeager crew to the space station they had captured. Being Chief Tactical Officer of Space Station Sierra 18, SS-18 was a very different beast than on a ship. He was never quite wild about being stationary, nevertheless the station ended up holding a pivotal role in several delegations and conflicts such as the recent war with the Romulans.

After serving on the Space Station, Amalek was recruited by long-time friend and current First Officer, Alexis Tregelen. He had just been promoted to Captain of the USS Titan, CL-2007 and wanted Amalek as his first officer. After the transfer he was happy to be on a ship again, though it was hard to leave the crew he had been with for nearly 10 years. He was happy to accompany Tregelen on his first command, however.

Titan:Eighth Mission - A Titan Reborn

Unfortunately, the Titan’s first mission was an unmitigated disaster. Assigned to escort a mining fleet, the Titan was forced to cater to a despicable man by the name of Munden. He ran a mining operation that apparently required protection from Klingon raids. One of those raids decimated the fleet in a battle that shamed Amalek more than any in his career. After appeasing the Klingons, it was discovered that they were right; Munden was working with the Romulans and escaped after crippling the Titan with a virus. Many crew members were lost, and the roster still has not quite recovered.

It took Amalek some time to get over it, and he has been concerned about Tregelen, but with a new first officer, their second mission has just gotten underway. First Contact with a new race.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Tactical Systems, Earth History
Academy Minor(s): Security, Ship Design
Hobbies and Pastimes: Learning human history, model-making, complex and exciting Holodeck "games," 3D chess, and swords
Short-Term Goals: To help his friend guide to the Titan to be renowned ship of the line

To be a highly valued member of the Yeager, earning his Captain's respect
Long-Term Goals: To find the USS Gemini and his Father. He would love the chance to put a stop to Luke Johnson as well
Personality: He's friendly and uplifting to anyone who's down. He does worry about pleasing others, perhaps too much, often ignoring what he himself wants. He keeps his feelings to himself and thus is a little apprehensive about telepaths
Sense of Humor: A good one; he can make and receive jokes rather easily. He also considers a sense of humor a crucial part of any judgment of character he makes
Phobias: Not a big fan of bugs
Likes: Italian food, and he has a fascination with Klingons
Dislikes: Vulcan food
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People that despise the military for no legitimate reason
Bad Habits or Vices: His cynicism leads him to make sarcastic, often insensitive and unbecoming remarks when faced with serious problems.
Achievements: Received the Advancement in History Award at the Academy. And the Recognition of Advancement in Tactical Systems Knowledge
Disappointments: Failed his first exam in the Academy, not being able to see his father the last chance he could. And, at first, he wasn't thrilled with the ship he was posted to, but it's grown on him
Illnesses: None
Strengths: The ability to stay focused, always ready to learn and a good sense of humor
Weaknesses: Has trouble with split-second decision making, and his increasing pessimism.
Fears: His ship's destruction. Telepath's mind-reading capabilities
Prejudices: Cardassians
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Casual pants and shirts. He also likes overcoats
Distinguishing Features: Birthmark just below his elbow, tiny “stubs” on his ears, remnant of one Romulan in his family line
Pets: None
Friends: Commander Nathan May, Commander Virginia Harrison-Black and Commodore Alexis Tregelen

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The day his father disappeared. Two months prior, before his father had left, he wanted to go out for dinner with the family and Amalek had opted not to go. He has felt excruciating guilt over it every since
Best Time: In the Academy, he and his squad-mates had the most renowned fighter pilot team in the school. In his last year, they put on a spectacular air show for the entire student body. Amalek only regrets falling out of touch with them
Most Crucial Experience: The day that he resolved that he would join Star Fleet, earn respect, honor, and command of his own ship that he could take in search of his father and bring him home
Role Model: Captain Thomas Marcus-the Captain of the USS Sovereign during the Kessok Incident. Amalek met him in the when he (Amalek) was in the Academy and has since really looked up to him. Capt. Marcus is currently retired and on earth
