Personal History

Joshua was born on Earth to the very wealthy Robin and Carolyn Barnett. His parents’ wealth stemmed from their hard work and good investing. Despite finding themselves in a rather lucrative position they were very down-to-earth and wanted the same for their son.

From a young age Joshua was taught that success was obtained by working hard and bettering oneself. To that end Joshua was nearly constantly found reading, studying, and following the example his parents set before him.

As a young teenager Joshua attended Chilton Preparatory School, a very competitive private school that was known for producing Ivy League students. While at Chilton, Joshua continued to prove himself as an excellent student. For a period of time his parents, and his educators, thought him to be antisocial. This belief existed because Joshua was more content to bury himself in the writings of authors such as Doyle, Tolstoy, and Kafka than to go to social gatherings.

At the urging of his parents and advisers Joshua joined several activities at Chilton to better help him socialize with those around him. Joshua quickly discovered he had a great love for chess and became his schools champion chess player. Joshua also joined the school newspaper – something he would later realize changed his life forever – and joined the school rugby team where he realized he craved the adrenaline rush that came with competition.

Joshua, who always had a long-term plan in place, made one of his life’s few rash decisions during his senior year of school. He had been planning on attending Yale upon graduation but at the last minute decided to attend Cornell to follow a fellow student named Elizabeth, whom he worked on the school paper with, and loved.

At Cornell Joshua gained a degree in political science, pre-law and eventually moved on to law school. During that time he and Elizabeth married and had their first child, a daughter named Emilia.

After law school Joshua joined Star Fleet in the tactical department and served the Federation in an active role for many years and several wars. Upon being promoted to Lieutenant Commander Joshua was transferred to the Judge Advocate General division where he continued to serve the Federation faithfully for numerous years first as a lawyer and later as a judge. Joshua was grateful that his time at JAG allowed him to be present in his children’s lives.

At the age of fifty Joshua retired from Star Fleet, but not from life. At first Joshua practiced law in the civilian field but was soon talked into running for a local political office on Earth. Joshua ran – and won – the election. Joshua served there for numerous years and was certain to win reelection. However, recent events made him contemplate something else, something bigger.

As a (mostly) unknown candidate Joshua announced his bid for President of the United Federation of Planets. Although Barnett’s funding was significantly less than other candidates his grass roots campaign quickly took off and against all odds Barnett won the election.
