Personal History

It was difficult for the Banquos to conceive, but some of the best doctors helped Gaeris and Odeht bring their son into the world. Trumayn’s childhood was relatively tame, with lots of loving attention from his mother while she wasn’t in the Caves of Mak’ala seeing to the well-being of the symbionts there. Gaeris was a good person and affectionate enough, but his knowledge and skills were in high demand and he spent large portions of his son’s life traveling between dig sites and off-world laboratories. His frequent absences didn’t stop Trumayn from viewing his father as a brilliant and amazing man.

An interest in medicine no doubt blossomed in the young Trill with the common presence of doctors in his life. Kurnwiel Syndrome was worthy of study, and every new datum was worth a paper in some medical journal. Those doctors were kindly, and Trumayn’s curiosity helped him to learn a great deal about other sentient humanoids since a variety of species were interested in the boy who was burned by modern medicine. One of his favorites was Doctor Rona Taurus from the University of Betazed. She described him as having a “thorny path of dreams” in the back of his mind. She admitted that she didn’t quite know what that meant, but that she fully believed that Trumayn could overcome the challenges of his lifelong illness and might even learn valuable lessons from it. When the young Trill later decided to put in the extra time needed to major in both medicine and psychology, he was sure to take all recommendations on courses and instructors for the latter from Doctor Taurus.

Much of Trumayn’s official medical training was acquired before entering Starfleet Academy thanks to a government-sponsored program for Trill students. He spent those years studying and writing, sparing little time for any personal affairs. Being turned down for joining with a symbiont at the same time that his childhood best friend Orla passed the commission’s appraisal, and the death of his father, led Trumayn to consider a great number of options for what to do with his adult life after his schooling was finished.

Applying to Starfleet was almost a whim. He could have done much on his home world simply by working hard and proving that you didn’t have to borrow past lives from other Trill to be a contributing member of the academic community. After a long day of getting lost in a stack of PADDs holding countless papers from successful Starfleet scientists and doctors, Trumayn at least believed he could one day rank among them with his own bold discoveries. He and his mother booked passage to Earth a couple months later to tour San Francisco and he left mildly enthusiastic about returning to earn a rank in Starfleet.

Much of Trumayn’s time at Starfleet Academy was spent buried in PADDs and holodeck simulations that would bring him closer to mastering his fields of study. The few occasions of socializing with others were motivated exclusively by the desire to enjoy the food and drink of San Francisco. One night of heavy drinking – where a somewhat introverted Bajoran named Rilem Celes was coaxed to partake as well – led to a shameful morning after where Trumayn and Celes blundered through a simulation assignment together. It was a new iteration of the infamous Kobayashi Maru scenario and ended with peals of inappropriate laughter from Cadet Rilem and vomiting in an Andorian’s lap by Cadet Banquo. It was the darkest moment on record for the otherwise prim and professional Trill medical cadet.

Trumayn finally became a Doctor of Medicine thanks to the next handful of hard-worked years at Starfleet Academy partnered with an internship at Starfleet Medical.

Up Is Down and Down Is Up When The Krynar Come to Town

Trumayn was acquired for his first starship assignment by the USS Chin'toka. He came aboard during the briefest of stops while they were dropping civilians off on a Starfleet colony. After this, they were off toward the Tellar system and an engagement with the Krynar.

The Trill's beginnings aboard the ship were humble but agreeable. He spent much of his time working with the Chief Medical Officer, Cellest Rubi, efficiently preparing some cargo bays to serve as a triage center. That triage was never needed.

A Gravity Based Weapon of immense power was employed by the Chin'toka and Trumayn was there on the bridge to watch it completely obliterate a Krynar vessel. While many were disoriented by the shockwave that resulted, Trumayn found the sensation euphoric and wonderful. Doctor Rubi subsequently promised Trumayn that he wasn't likely to be spending later critical moments at a science console. He had at least appreciated that he was able to give some valuable first aid during and shortly after the encounter, his first time treating both a Cardassian and an Orion.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Medicine (Biochemistry); Psychology.
Academy Minor(s): Advanced Botany; Holography; Xenoentomology.
Hobbies and Pastimes: Trumayn is a gifted musician. He can play most percussion and stringed instruments from sound alone, but has shyly rejected any formal training. His mother has always encouraged him, even going so far as to apply on his behalf for a seat at Trill’s Tenaran Music Academy. This served only to embarrass him as he had never learned how to read music and never considered himself capable of creating it – he merely copied it.

While he may never seek to make a life of drumming or strumming, he owns a handful of instruments and plays them on occasion to pass the time. The Trill piano in the lobby of the Anthropology Building has served as a place for Trumayn to exercise his mastery of this particular performance art, but he has a tendency to wander off after accumulating any sort of sizable audience. On the other hand, the young man makes no attempts at singing. His voice is pleasant for speaking, but he has little hope of contributing meaningfully to any choirs.
Also a bit of a tinkerer and collector, Trumayn has a few “toys” he likes to experiment with. Between assignments, he will spend some hours of the day attempting upgrades to his medical and psycho- tricorders. Thanks to the vivid, gruesome stories of Doctor Avina and a sizable inheritance of gold-pressed latinum from his father, Trumayn has a collection of other oddities. He had a brief opportunity to study a Klingon agonizer in the past, although not to use it, and it has given him some motivation to increase his own endurance and pain tolerance. He participated in a grueling, Vulcan-led academy program which was designed to raise one’s stamina and pain threshold via meditation. He has written papers on the shared threshold of pain that a Trill and his or her host can endure; and, through a combination of determination, academy studies and practices, and the odd side effects of Kurnwiel Syndrome, he feels he has succeeded.
Again thanks to Doctor Avina, devices and substances related to “coaxing” information out of the unwilling are of academic interest to him. He does not engage in such practices, but enjoys learning about them. He has collected several gigaquads of data on Romulan techniques alone.
Short-Term Goals: Partake in medical seminars hosted on planets he has not visited yet.
Finish his very ambitious upgrades to his trusted medical tricorder.
Enjoy some shore leave at Risa. He’s heard very good things.
Long-Term Goals: Bringing Nurse Sæunn, the hologram he created, to proper self-awareness. He has studied holography, but he lacks a complete degree in engineering. It’s taken a great deal of patience and luck for Trumayn to bring her to her current state of utility and intelligence.
Having avidly researched Starfleet’s available texts on the Delta Quadrant, the Vidiian species and the so-named “Think Tank” collective in particular, Trumayn Banquo is intent on dramatically furthering the pursuits of medicine for the benefit of the Federation. He believes that the Federation needs more driven, brilliant minds at the helm and looking past the unfortunate distractions of war and interspecies espionage. He has yet to meet an Admiral he had a true cause to admire and believes that more Starfleet officers with medical and science backgrounds need to be the ones who graduate beyond the captain’s chair.
Trumayn still wishes to know the truth of what happened to his father. Gaeris was a bright scientist and as far as the Banquo family knew he was hired by a very experienced starship crew operating a rather advanced vessel. The investigation of the incident suggests that some enterprising Ferengi may have made off with the largest pieces of the exploded Khoorlin. Trumayn keeps up regular correspondence with Investigator Shaul Meed of the Trill Science Ministry just in case any new leads have turned up. The ministry lost valuable people and data and some hope is held on to that a clue will emerge.
Captaining his own scientific vessel, with bleeding edge scanning capabilities, remains a long-term goal for Trumayn. While plenty members of Starfleet appreciate their medical officers because they require occasional patching up, a ship’s doctor too often takes a back seat to major decision making. One Trill doctor hopes to change that trend through his own genius. Having a remarkable discovery, something prized by the elites of the Starfleet medical community, would surely aid Trumayn in this wish.
Sense of Humor: Almost unique. Trumayn has an appreciation for the absurd, and also tends to find things funny that others see only as bland coincidence.
Phobias: Transporter psychosis. While hardly ever diagnosed in this century, Trumayn is acutely distressed by the idea of scattering his particles in the space between a ship and the surface of a planet. He faces this fear only at the direct orders of a superior, and appreciates (and accepts) any offers of leniency given by way of a shuttlecraft transport option.
Likes: Animals, particularly species of other planets that aliens might keep as pets). Spicy foods. Stirring holonovels, especially when they have any of his favorite areas of study as subject matters. Intelligent people who truly appreciate the mysteries of the Universe. Vulcans – he really appreciates their style and their way of life.
Dislikes: Klingons, and most anyone else who views prowess in martial combat as a sign of personal greatness.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Needless pulling of rank by superiors. Anyone with anger issues.
Bad Habits or Vices: A gluttonous streak that drives Trumayn to fearlessly indulge in wild foods and strong drink.
Achievements: The programming of Nurse Sæunn is a serious point of pride for Trumayn. She has helped him with several medical and scientific experiments and does a very good job of keeping him objective in his pursuits. She is also one of the more secure programs in Starfleet’s computers thanks to the help of an incredibly intelligent cadet befriended during shared classes, the Bajoran communications specialist Rilem Celes. Trumayn feels that he is nowhere near reaching the full potential of her programming.
Disappointments: Starfleet may have just been a crazy whim for Doctor Banquo, and he’s not sure it is the life he really wants. He loves his people, but he wonders if the byzantine rules surrounding the assessment of candidates for joining Trills with symbionts isn’t doing more harm to them than good. He’s embittered any time a joined Trill describes the wisdom and skill that come with the presence of their symbiont. Starfleet, at least, doesn’t see him as a second class citizen because he was deemed unfit for the process.
Illnesses: Trumayn suffers from a very rare condition called Kurnwiel Syndrome. It is a genetic mutation that causes a Trill’s nerve endings to receive sensory input incorrectly. For Trumayn, this is of greatest concern for any medical treatment he might receive. Most of the devices in a standard issue medkit are likely to cause him great pain when used upon him. While he is fairly resilient against low temperatures, extreme heat causes numbness very quickly in his extremities. When he has control of the climate in the room, one or more individuals with him will inevitably complain of how cold it is.
Strengths: A well-studied individual, Trumayn Banquo benefits from a strong, photographic memory. Mathematical, visual, and auditory input of varying degrees of complexity remain entrenched in his brain for significant lengths of time. This had made certain aspects of his schooling and training at Starfleet Academy almost simple by comparison to the rigors endured by other students. While lacking in physical bulk or strength, he does possess nimble fingers and was ranked as his class’ quickest typist.
Weaknesses: A truly good bedside manner is just out of reach for Doctor Banquo because he lacks some of the patience and scrutiny that are required to read the fears and wants of those he works with. In the name of duty, he can usually take the time to identify what is bothering someone. He doesn’t seem to want or be able to do this very effectively in his interpersonal relationships. As wrapped up in science as Trumayn is, it requires a great deal of effort for the Trill to maintain lasting friendships. This doesn’t mean he wants to have them any less.
Trumayn’s aim with a phaser is quite lousy. He thinks that he may be able to make up for this with a quick wit – in simulations, he seems to manage quite well to deceive hostile forces with his words – and by palming a useful hyposprays. His youthful days practicing parlor magic have paid off in odd ways.
Fears: Like so many, Trumayn wants to look back one day on a very meaningful life. He inwardly frets that his life will be a mediocre one. Many humans join Starfleet with stars in their eyes and find endless joy in their adventures through space. The Trill doctor needs something more than that, whatever it might end up being.
Prejudices: While he dislikes certain species for traditional practices that he considers barbaric or pointless, Trumayn makes a sincere effort to appreciate the more sophisticated representatives of any particular sentient race. He makes an exception for Nausicaans, however, and believes they are all fit for early graves. (A sentiment not freely shared with any residents of Nausicaa.)
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Clean athletic shirt; fashionable loose-fitting and often long jacket; boot cut slacks; suede boots.
Distinguishing Features: Nothing of particular note
Pets: Perhaps serving as a bit of irony to those Trills who have the honor of being joined, Trumayn has spent a good portion of his life tending insects. He apprenticed as an apiarist during his time studying under the gregarious Denobulan instructor, Doctor Avina. Trumayn has insisted on being able to bring some variety of beetles, ants, and wasps with him wherever he has resided. He learned early on that he should keep the critters out of sight of visiting strangers, at least before developing firm friendships. Any bugs that live long enough to warrant it receive names of the more interesting historical figures of Starfleet or Trill history.
Friends: Trumayn Banquo and Orla Gallus were the best of friends. Each of them had parents serving as Guardians in Mak’ala, and both of the Trill youngsters were avidly curious about the mysteries of medicine and science and they had dreamed aloud of serving either the Trill Science Ministry or the Daystrom Research Institute. Much of their schooling and social activities were shared from childhood and on; and, while they each grew into very intelligent and attractive individuals they never felt any spark of romance between them.
The two Trills’ paths diverged sharply, however, when the Symbiosis Commission completed their appraisals of both Trumayn and Orla. The young man returned home, deemed unfit for joining. The young woman, approved recipient of a wise and long-lived symbiont, soon became Orla Kezh. Orla’s fascination with science was suddenly overshadowed by a thirst for exploration and interaction with other cultures. With sparse few parting words to Trumayn, she joined a deep space expedition bound for the Beta Quadrant.
With most of his attention in Starfleet Academy devoted to work and not his classmates, Trumayn was sadly lacking in friends around the time of his graduation. Nurse Sæunn was his closest companion during his time in school and remains a valuable confidante. She understands his moods better than any other. That should come as no surprise since Trumayn had created her – she is a photonic being that he had programmed to be his friend and assistant. Sæunn, modeled exactly after one of the secondary characters from the popular World War III epic film, is a tall and intensely attractive blond human. Most of Trumayn’s peers don’t recognize her from the film and he’s been mocked for keeping his own version of a “Vulcan Love Slave.” For his part, Trumayn doesn’t feel much need for defending his “professional affection” for a hologram nor his appreciation for the aesthetics of a beautiful human. He believes that, more than once, he has seen strong potential for Sæunn to gain self-awareness. There is no documented proof of Trumayn’s wish. Her program has become volatile more than once with his attempts to bring it to the stage where self-awareness is possible, but it is something he intends to keep working toward when he has holodeck time to do so.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Early on in life, Trumayn was diagnosed with a rare condition of the nervous system that reacts poorly to most modern medical devices. He has foul memories of a dermal regenerator being used upon him as a child. While a fall he suffered after a youthful skiing misadventure was horrible to endure by itself, the burning sensation throughout his entire body upon the application of the device was ultimate agony leading up to Trumayn finally passing out. He tends to carry a partially modified medkit with him that is intended to be used on him should he suffer some injury. A tag is worn from his right wrist to indicate he suffers from Kurnwiel Syndrome.
Best Time: No moments in Trumayn’s past stand out as the best. He has had charming exchanges with immense giants in fields that matter to him, but he was always just the curious student in those instances. His great moment is ahead of him.
Most Crucial Experience: Trumayn’s rejection by the Trill Evaluation Board for candidacy to join with a symbiont has certainly served as a turning point in his life. It altered, if not tainted, his view of his own people and left him despondent and depressed. It drove him to consider options for his life that would have him leave Trillius Prime altogether.
Role Model: Doctor Banquo would say that he looks up to his mother, but that is mostly out of respect for her benevolent spirit. He appreciates that she is fulfilled in her role as a Trill Guardian, but it is a lot in life that causes mixed feelings in him. Perhaps his greatest inspiration is a man he’s never met, the Vissian Doctor of Medicine, Teyrennik. Many hours were whiled away in Instructional Holodeck 4 where Trumayn and a photonic Teyrennik performed holographic surgery together. Sadly, Teyrennik passed away early in Trumayn’s last year at Starfleet Academy and thus the Trill was denied the opportunity of ever meeting the great Vissian surgeon. Teyrennik had many students and Trumayn at least holds out hope that he will encounter some of Teyrennik’s pupils during his travels.
