Personal History

.

Early life

William George Banks was born to a family always considered wealthy, honourable and bursting with pride. Wealth was a matter of irrelevance in the modern day, however prejudices and notions of superiority were much deeper ingrained in the family. Born into a very stoic family with calm demeanours, almost entirely void of open emotion. As a child William found this suffocating, and he found his outlets in wreaking small amounts of mayhem. Often armed with a little slingshot or a hand crafted wood bow, many a window suffered shattered fates at the hand of young William – while he suffered a lot of discipline and further emotional distance from his parents. This was the seed that would lead to William's chaotic adolescence. William attended highly regarded schools, steeped in tradition and the roots to the past. He secretly enjoyed the study of history, dead languages, and the sciences – but he would never admit that to his peers.

As he reached adolescence his passion for destructive devices was coupled with technical ability, and transformed from an emotional outlet to a mental outlet. It was his conversion of a communicator into a microwave beam generator (of which he used to over cook many replicator meals of his friends) that made him realise his passion for engineering. However emotionally he began to internalise, and he began to find himself at odds with who he was inside and who he was on the outside. Internally, an intellectual who wanted nothing more than to push the envelope and was content with a quiet life – externally his habits of rebellion, causing mayhem, and partying took their physical and psychological toll. It was not until his maiden voyage aboard his father's 21 foot yacht, 'Wit Amidst Folly', did he finally find himself at peace with himself, he was still not whole but that didn't matter when the wind caught your sails. It was around this time he met Dimitri, a fellow sailor who preferred quiet days and calm seas. The two do not see each other often, however each encounter is a marathon debate that covers quantum mechanics, religion, psychology, temporal physics, and on the odd occasion: Women. Now with merry making not an act of rebellion he found he attended less parties, but enjoyed them a whole lot more – it was then he took up German Fencing. Here he found a way of coupling his disparate states, physical, mental, and emotional - channelling them into one purpose. With focus, motivation, drive, and outlets he achieved well academically. Successfully designing a Phaser Rifle with a Concussion setting, capable of knocking over Human sized humanoids without any burns or other injuries earned him a coveted Young Engineer's Award, this with his grades secured his place at Starfleet Academy.

Academy

His time at the Academy was challenging. He had grown far apart from many friends he had made in his schooling years, and begun to realise that he had a mental and physical edge over his peers. The results of his early forging of identity, and ability to focus. This realisation led to dangerous confidence, that borderlined arrogance. It finally crossed the threshold after his successful solo navigation of the Magellan Strait, achieving a new record. He sailed it on his 35 foot yacht, 'Sense Amid Madness' – a name he gave the ship, a name that represented how he saw himself. This record pushed his confidence well past arrogance, an error in his character that nearly resulted in his death a few months later (See painful experience). With his hubris cleaved into a quiet, well refined self confidence and his life now in balance – his career fell into place. All of his early victories and successes where the result of taking risks where no one else would. A lot of luck at gambling nights with his friends, having nearly drowned twice on his run of the Magellan Strait due to taking unnecessary risks in taking advantage of the wind, and repeatedly tested the Phaser Rifle on himself. It was these lucky streaks that resulted in a terrible habit of risk taking, well past the point of reason and logical courses of action, but they also rewarded him handsomely.

USS Columbia, FF-6145

William's first mission was aboard the USS Columbia. He was assigned as OIC of the second shift in Engineering. Banks was aware it was a SOCOM Vessel, and was overwhelmed at his assignment. Will knew he would have to push himself beyond his limits to prove himself a valuable member of the team – and the first mission did just that. Columbia's mission was to Extract or Execute a captured federation operative on Outpost 19 – a Tal'Shiar interrogation center. The Stealth System made the incursion into Romulan space feasible, and without incident upon arrival. The sensor's proved to be overwhelmed by the increased magnetic field of the Brown Dwarf. The same magnetic disturbances begun acting as a series of EMP's which finally disabled all ship systems. This resulted in an “All hands on deck” called from the Chief Engineer in an attempt to effect immediate repairs. The EMPs where counter-acted by imbuing the hull with alloys, creating and amplifying the Faraday Cage effect. Banks proceeded to effect as many simultaneous repairs on all subsystems with the aid of all Enlisted personnel – Gray was attempting repairs to the Stealth System. Life Support, Subspace, Warp Engines, Subspace Controls, Phasers, and Tractor Beam were all functioning after a hard reset. Shields were interlaced with the Stealth System and out of his hands, and the inertial dampeners had failed, with a reset not yielding any results. After a trace of packet data, it became apparent that the sensor's were failing to relay appropriate data to the effected part of the circuit. Banks removed the sensor, and utilized an ODN Junction Traffic Director to bridge a connection between the ODN and the Inertial Dampener directly. With the aid of Crewman Th'Naar, the ODN JTD tapped, modulated, and rerouted the correct data to the Inertial Dampeners – restoring functionality. William was the OIC for the duration of all of these repairs, as Lieutenant Skyler Gray was required elsewhere in the ship to repair the Stealth System. As repairs were completed, Banks was attempting a soft reset to bring diagnostics back online when Gray required further assistance. Banks sent Chief Price and Crewman Zagod, remaining the OIC on deck.

The environmental controls were disabled, and Banks was attempting to circumvent central access by rerouting hash sum authority checks elsewhere, the aim was to utilize Science's computing power – but the situation was resolved by the Officers present in environmental controls, and Banks' intervention was not required.

An unexpected Dorsal impact with a Romulan Light Cruiser resulted in a loss of a Sensor Array, and a number of shield generators. Banks redirected power from Decks 1, 2, and 3 to the Ventral power backbone, then utilized the the excess power in the Dorsal backbone to boost the output of the remaining dorsal shield generators, lifting the shielding capacity substantially. In the debrief, William learned that the operative was a Pawn of a Uihuveri telepath, and that the security officer on board – West, was also a pawn. West had murdered two crew members, disabled environmental controls and locked himself in. It was this situation that Price and Zagod were sent to, and the failure of the gravity systems.

En route to Star Base Bravo after their encounter with the Uihvueri pawns – Columbia was diverted to Tellar Prime to assist in the assault. Columbia's Crew formed a number of ground attack teams, whose roles were to secure VIPs. The mission went without incident – almost no shots were fired, and the Krynar were defeated at Tellar during the ground operation. With the mission effectively cancelled, Columbia was recalled back to Star Base Bravo for refit and shore leave.

She was diverted again, this time to RZ with USS Quasar. Adaran was arrested for war crimes, the Columbia was to be decommissioned and the crew effectively binned. This was a cover up plan, and Adaran would be utilised as a Star Fleet Pawn to assassinate key members of the Tal'Shiar and cripple their main base.

The core skeleton crew of Columbia was recruited to foil this plan. During this time, Banks assumed the Chief Engineer command due to Gray being incapacitated. He utilised a Tractor beam to counter other tractor beams, altered a Warp signature to mimic a Romulan scout vessel while under cloak, and beam Adaran off of a shuttle while the shuttle was moving at ¾ impulse and Columbia was at multiple warp factors.

Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who will not have opinions of others fielded, or discourses explored, Self limiting attitudes and inappropriate fashion decisions.
Bad Habits or Vices: Gambler
Achievements: Engineering design Award for youth: Concussion phaser, Record holder for the Fastest solo sail through the Strait of Magellan, Highest achieving physics student in school.
Disappointments: Thesis yielded no promising results for starship weaponry and all working models and theorems debunked. Requires further experimentation, and hypothesis. Injury cost caused him to drop out in the fencing tournament.
Illnesses: None.
Strengths: Thinking out of the box, Confidence, Martial prowess, Designing.

Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Double breasted peacoat, V-neck tee, tapered slim pants and suede high top shoes
Distinguishing Features: Scar that begins from the mid point between neck and left shoulder, drawing a line from there to just before the sternum on an angle. William is a student of the German School of Fencing as a recreational activity. The scar was the result of a near fatal injury. William was over confident in his abilities, and attempted to lure the opponent into a attack with a Fool's Guard. He requested the scar be left in place, as ever a reminder of the dangers of hubris.
Pets: None
Friends: Dimitri, a cool, calm and collected man. Ever the symbol of professionalism, and stoicism. Preferring a solid debate, a good book, or a metaphysics discussion instead of a party, a fence in the gardens, or a joy-flight. Known to patiently wait in conversations, particularly in group conversations only adding short, poignant, and thought provoking sentences that punch points home and galvanise more heated and energetic conversations.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Fencing Injury: William realised early in the bout he was matched against a physically weaker opponent. He continually taunted the opponent with a fool's guard, repeatedly using his superior strength to counter by smashing through the attacks. He hasn't accounted for the fact that his opponent was acting weaker, when William taunted again. His opponent showed his true strength, the now tired Will couldn't raise his sword in time - and the safeguards failed.

His arrogance nearly cost him his life.
Best Time: Solo sail. He was the catalyst, reactants, and productions for the whole equation. He was in command of himself, and his vessel. His decisions where final, and he knew he could count on his ship and himself. No one else to rely on, no one else could fail. One variable, that he was the master of.
Most Crucial Experience: Time at the Academy, identity was formed and concreted. Life long Friends made, and career was in motion. Passions where found and followed, mistakes were made and many lessons were learned.
