Personal History

Balamuni is the youngest cub of Daama and Paal Karuth, unlike most Mirak Tigris’s the Karuth didn’t hold to the Clan ways, they didn’t hold to the blood feuds and clan rivalries, they were merchants, they bought and sold goods, like wine, leather, precious and semi-precious stones, and metals. It was expected that Balamuni would take her place among her clan as a procurer of the aforementioned items, but she preferred technology, she loved watching the ships taking off and landing at her families private landing facility, she imagined being on one of those ships one day. She never forgot seeing the local Star Fleet Officers using their tricorders to scan a cargo container, confirming cargo contents, analyzing mineral purity of different ore samples, etc. Balamuni remembers one time the Star Fleet Officers were searching for contraband weapons, as certain clans had been smuggling weapons to Pro-Romulan forces in the neighboring sector. She was no more than six or seven seasons old, but that stuck with her. It’s not that the Mirak didn’t have the technology, it just wasn’t as advanced at that of other Federation worlds.

Star Fleet kept a small contingent of Officers on Oranth III, they were predominately Science Officer along with a few Tactical Officers, but there were Engineering Officers present to maintain the equipment. Most of the Mirak got along with the Star Fleet Officers and Balamuni were no exception when she wasn’t doing chores, she was hanging around the Star Fleet Officers, she was always asking questions, especially the Engineers, asking them about their equipment, the tricorders, the phasers, the shields around the base.

One day the Commander of the Base Commander Tyrell Artus, a young handsome dark-skinned Human took her and several other young Mirak’s up in one of the shuttles, she was amazed to see her home from Space, it was amazing Artus flew them over the islands that were there home, then took them far out in the system. Balamuni spent many hours talking with Artus, he told her about his home on Earth, a place called South Africa, his clan was Zulu.

As time passed Balamuni spent more time with the Engineers, she enjoyed learning the Chief Engineer a Lieutenant Amy Sanchez, who taught her everything she knew about tricorders. Balamuni would say how she wished she could join Star Fleet, but her family and Clan elders wouldn’t permit it. Her family felt she should stay on Oranth and be a Merchant, her clan had been merchants for as long as any of them could remember. Her mother and father would argue with her all the time, saying, “Star Fleet was no place for her, business and providing the necessary good and item that people wanted is where she belonged.” Said her parents.

When Balamuni was sixteen she had told Sanchez and Artus about her wanting to join Star Fleet and how her parents felt. Artus tried speaking to her parents, but they wouldn’t hear of it. So, to give Balamuni a feel for what it was like to be in Star Fleet, he allowed her to do simple tasks around the base when her schedule allowed it.

When Balamuni reached seventeen seasons she had reached the Age of Realization, the time when young Tigris Females decided what they want to do with their lives, most usually take a mate and begin a family of their own, still many become Sorceresses, to heal the sick, a small few join the Planetary Militia; but with the pressure of her family, she was afraid she would be stuck as a Leather Merchant, or working in her sisters Inn, waiting tables or cleaning up. Balamuni went and spoke to her clan elders and told them she didn’t want to be a Merchant, she wanted to join Star Fleet, even her parent didn’t want her joining Star Fleet, they decided if she didn’t become a Merchant, she would be banished to the froze polar regions and forced to join the convent of the Eternal Sisters, a religious order that specializes in educating rebellious young females in the ways of the Midwives Healing arts, as there was always a need for healers, or poison to take out a rival, or to ensure a successful business transaction. The midwives were females who were trained to heal, they knew which herbs and roots could cure illness, they were a dedicated and noble order, but not something Balamuni was interested in.

What she didn’t know was the Artus and Sanchez, submitted her work that she did for them to Star Fleet earning her credit, thus allowing her to attend Star Fleet Academy if she wished to.

Balamuni had arrived on Earth several weeks before the start of the School year, she wanted to explore Earth, especially the homeland of her Academy Sponsors Commander Artus and Lieutenant Sanchez, she found Africa and Mexico to be very lovely places, that’s when she stumbled upon an ancient Connection between Earth and Oranth, while in Africa she made a trip to Egypt that’s where she came across Sakhmet, In Egyptian mythology, Sakhmet is a warrior goddess as well as a goddess of healing. She is depicted as a lioness. She was seen as the protector of the pharaohs and led them in warfare. However, the connection didn’t end there, Maahes was an ancient Egyptian lion-headed god of war, whose name means "he who is true beside her". He was seen as the son of the Creator god Ptah, as well as the feline goddess (Bast in Lower Egypt or Sekhmet in Upper Egypt) whose nature he shared. Maahes was a deity associated with war, protection, and weather, as well as that of knives, lotuses, and devouring captives. His cult was centered in Taremu and Per-Bast, the cult centers of Sekhmet and Bast, respectively. This truly could not have been a coincidence, so many Feline Human gods and goddesses. Balamuni was intrigued, she searched more Terran History and Mythology and found so many references to these Feline based gods and goddesses, in just about every Terran culture, from Japan to India to the Americas. As her time was running out and her Adventures at the Academy were about to begin this mystery would have to wait for a future date to be explored.

Academy years, Balamuni’s Academy training was vastly different than what she had read about, as the newer Star Fleet ships were smaller, in size and smaller crews. Officers were expected to have more than just one skill to their credit, as a result, each new cadet was of course pursuing a major like Engineering, Medical, Security, etc. However, each cadet had to take a yearlong elective minor, as Officers sometimes had to pull double duty to make up for the smaller crews.

Freshman year at the Academy, Balamuni was beyond excited she had never left her home before. She ran away from home to join Star Fleet, despite being around Star Fleet Officers her whole life, she felt a bit uncomfortable, her favorite class her freshman year was Warp Core Mechanics, it was much harder than she expected. She had a few rough experiences with the other cadets; one girl a Human named Rebeca Kurn used to taunt her saying, “Hear Kitty. Kitty…Kitty.” Sometimes at her workstation, she would find saucers of milk or a ball of yarn.

However, she never let it bother her, she rose above it and got the top mark in her class that year.

Sophomore year was not much better, the Human Rebeca Kurn had sabotaged her project in Cybernetics, a project that she had worked on for the better part of the semester. She had programed Balamuni’s project to spray ink all over the instructor and then explode, thankfully no one was hurt. After two years of abuse. Balamuni confronted Rebeca, Balamuni lost her temper and not realizing it but she and Rebeca got into a huge argument, the verbal argument escalated into a shoving match. It landed Balamuni in the Superintendent’s Office. She was sure she would be expelled, but as luck would have it, the Faculty was aware of the problem she was having with Rebeca. Balamuni got off with a verbal reprimand.

She felt terrible about what had happened, she sought Rebecca and apologized. The two females talked it over an became friends, not good friends, not great friends, just friends. They respected each other and kind of got to like each other.

Junior Year was an exceedingly difficult year, Deflector Technologies class was significantly difficult, as deflectors shared many components and properties with things like transporters and replicators in the respect that they utilized similar components in their processors. During an assignment, each student had to construct a portable forcefield generator using salvaged parts. Balamuni grabbed a neural gel pack from an old replicator and integrated field regulator from a ship’s deflector control, two pieces of technologies that couldn’t communicate with each other if they wanted to, The forcefield generator worked briefly but exploded injuring herself and several other cadets.

Senior year, the light at the end of the tunnel, a Cadets glimpse of the finish line. Four years of exams, training, lectures, and the odd temporary assignment to some remote outpost or Star Ship, to practice and learn from officers working in the cadet’s specific field of expertise.

Balamuni was assigned to a frigate the USS Berlin, it was a nice ship, but a fairly new ship, or at least a recently updated ship, it’s Chief Engineer a Bolian named Drana, taught Balamuni so much about Warp Cores and Engineering in general, Drana was truly a brilliant engineer. Balamuni was a bit uneasy at first, she wasn’t sure of herself around strangers.

One day the Berlin was responding to a distress call from a ship reporting problems with their warp core and navigational deflector.

The Berlin moved in to assist, when suddenly the alien ship attacked, As the Berlin wasn’t expecting an attack, they didn’t have their defensive shields, just the navigational shields. The Alien attacked; they fired an energy-based weapon similar to Romulan Disruptors, but with a much higher Electromagnetic signature to it. The ship was of an unknown origin, it had design elements from just about every known species, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, Bajoran, Gorn, and several others that couldn’t be identified.

Drana and Balamuni had been in Engineering when an E.P.S. conduit exploded behind the Station that they were sitting at. Balamuni being a feline, and having quicker reflexes was able to dodge the metal fragments. Drana wasn’t so lucky, the elder Engineer caught a large chunk of metal severing his Carotid artery. Balamuni scrambled to his side, she applied pressure to the wound and summoned medical help, but by the time they arrived Drana had died in her arms, that was the first time she had seen someone die. She recalled looking at her hands, they were soaked in blood, from putting pressure on his wound. She recalled him looking into her eyes and he attempted to say, “Thank You.”

To this date, at least to the best of her knowledge, there have been no other recorded encounters with such a ship.

The rest of her senior year was relatively uneventful, the Aqueduct system on Mars needed major repairs and upgrades. Though not a structural Engineer Balamuni volunteered to work on the project as she felt it would make her a better more well-rounded engineer.
