The Ba'ku are humanoids who, when first observed by Starfleet, lived in a single village on the planet Ba'ku.

This species once lived on another planet, but moved to their current planet, located in the Briar Patch, due to their solar system being on the verge of self-annihilation.

In 2375, they had a population of only 600. Due to the life-giving properties of their new planet, the Ba'ku became embroiled in a conspiracy between Starfleet and the Son'a.

Biology

The Ba'ku resemble Humans in appearance only.

The metaphasic radiation from their planet's rings continually regenerates their genetic structures, which prevents them from aging once they reach maturity. The radiation also prevents permanent illnesses or injuries. It is unclear what effect this radiation has on Humans or other humanoids.

Culture

The Ba'ku are a community-oriented, pacifist, agrarian society. They use only simple machines, claiming that technology only diminishes those who use of it.

They refuse to use weapons, even in times of self-defense, believing that to do so would be to lose everything that they are.

Young Ba'ku artisans apprentice for several decades in order to develop their skills.

From a young age, Ba'ku develope incredible mental discipline and clarity of perception. After centuries, some have even learned to slow down the perception of the passage of time, allowing them to explore the depths of a single moment.

Known History

The Ba'ku originated from a technologically-advanced civilization, and had knowledge of warp drives and positronic devices. Though they once traveled the galaxy, their race was on the brink of self-destruction in the 21st Century, due to the weapons of mass destruction their technology had allowed them to create. In and around the year 2066, a small group was able to flee their solar system, and settled on a planet inside what the Federation calls the Briar Patch. They preferred the isolation, believing it kept them safe from the threats of other worlds.

While living on this new planet, it was discovered that the planet's ring gave off an unusual amount of metaphasic radiation. This form of radiation gave the Ba'ku virtual immortality, and the refugees abandoned technology altogether. However, in the mid-23rd Century, a small group of Ba'ku rejected its society's simple way of life, and were exiled when they tried to take control of the settlement. These exiled persons became known as the Son'a, who vowed to return one day and take control of the radiation that granted the immortality.

In 2375, the Son'a told the Federation they could harvest the metaphasic radiation from the planet's rings, though doing so would render the planet uninhabitable. Believing the Ba'ku to be pre-warp, the Federation decided it would covertly relocate the planet's people. However, the plan was exposed, and arguments were made that by removing the Ba'ku against the will, it was immoral and against Federation principals. The relocation plan was terminated, and a few Son'a even returned to the planet to live out the rest of their lives.
