1181 - A supernova was observed by Chinese astronomers in the constellation now known as "Cassiopeia." The "guest star" (as it was referred to) remained visible for 185 days.
1881 - Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming is born. He is most well-known for discovering the broad-spectrum antibiotic of penicillin.
