Personal History

Johnner Asil was born in a small farming community on the Planet Argelius II. His parents broke with the custom of a single identifier because he was their only child. He was a happy child who made few friends, the friends he did make he cherished. As he grew he found he excelled in math and the sciences and often found himself stargazing for hours. A career in Starfleet was all he could talk about with his family. On his 16th birthday his best friend Jacen, and his astronomy class went on a week long field trip around the Argelius system.

While underway, a Romulan task force invaded and annexed Argelius and a number of systems along the neutral zone. They quickly overwhelmed Federation defenses and established a blockade around Argelius II. Faced with the possibility of destruction, Captain Rebecca Powers directed her ship to leave the system. They succeeded in leaving, but not before suffering crippling damage by a perusing warbird. Left for dead, the Seshat drifted stern over bow for several hours as the crew made essential repairs so they could warp out of system system.

Captain Powers lead them to the Qualor ship graveyard, a place considered strategically insignificant by the Romulans. She set to work, converting her vessel using parts from the derelict ships to make repairs. She also began to train the students and teachers in essential resource gathering as well as repair and operation of the ship. With their augmented crew along with a few recovered shuttles, they conducted guerrilla raids and recon on the Romulan fleet. Captain Power transmitted intelligence gathered to the Federation over the coarse of 11 months. Their exploits drew the attention of a Romulan warbird in the area which followed them under cloak and attacked. They first disabled the tractor beam platform Asil was on crushing his leg under a support beam before they turned on the Seshat. She sustained extensive damage to her engines and then they hit her bridge. Asil watched as the ship he lived and trained in die before his eyes. The Romulans had little time to savor their victory however as the USS Buran arrived to assist. They transported the remaining survivors aboard and rejoined the fleet that liberated Argelius.

Although Asil and his friends were received by Starfeet with praise and gratitude, the pacifist Argelian government condemned the actions of Asil and his few remaining comrades. They refused to repatriate anyone who to up arms against the Romulans and under penalty of death forbid their return to Argelius.

Asil felt broken long after his physical wounds were healed. Living on the starbase above Argelius did not help and he hopped from counselor to counselor until he was referred to Veronica Timberlake, a Starfleet officer and therapist stationed on Mars. They decided that the first thing to do was to move. Over a few months she helped him face some of the demons and ghosts in his life. Asil found himself motivated again to pursue a career in Starfleet, however his counselor pushed him to first attend the University of Mars and build an application that the Academy could not refuse. Following graduation he spent 3 years as an engineer on Jupiter Station, specializing in weapons and defensive systems. With the combined knowledge he qualified for a fast track program offered to college graduates.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Tactical
Academy Minor(s): Combat Search and Rescue
Hobbies and Pastimes: Asil enjoys working with his hands, anything to get his hands dirty really. He finds that schematics and system analyses calms his mind and provides a sense of order. He has a bonsai tree in his quarters that he maintains meticulously.
Short-Term Goals: He would like to serve on an active starship. He has experience working on new starships but they never had a full crew. In his mind the ship isn’t alive without the crew.
Long-Term Goals: Although it would be unlikely the Argelian government would reverse their decision, Asil would like to see his home again, to at least reconnect with his parents. At least to tell them he is okay and happy, and to see Jacen’s family.
Personality: Asil considers himself a pretty easy going guy. He keeps a plank of wood in his office with the words “you’ve got to fix the boat, or get out and swim”, a mantra that motivates him to maintain and improve himself.
Sense of Humor: Asil has a fairly quick wit and despite some of experiences he has maintained a healthy if somewhat dark sense of humor. Sometimes all you can do is laugh at a situation.
Phobias: Suffocation is a real possibility in space, and Asil has faced it several times on board some dead ship at the Qualor graveyard. The state of decay on some of the ships mandated they be in EV suits at all time.
Likes: Asil enjoys working, keeping up on the latest technical innovations. His music taste is pretty varied, from Rock to Opera, to Klingon Rock Opera, if it has a consistent beat he’ll listen. He also likes to keep fit. During his final semester, he trained with the CSAR team at the academy and enjoyed seeing his body tone up a bit. At the same time he enjoys cooking when he can rather than utilizing the replicator. He really likes to cook for a group of people, it was a collateral duty for the students when he was on the Seshat.
Dislikes: More like detests, Asil absolutely detests Voles and other parasites which can find their way onto a ship or space station. He participated in more than one vole exterminating mission when he was on Jupiter Station. They’re disgusting creatures, they leave their droppings everywhere they go, they chew on wiring and when they fry themselves on a translator, someone has to clean up that mess too.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: The only thing Asil has openly griped about is a pushy Captains. “Just because I deliver them a ship doesn’t mean I personally chose the carpet colors... I don’t care for it either!”
Bad Habits or Vices: Coffee is the drink of many species at work or as a pick-me-up, and Asil is no different he keeps a french press in his office and another in his quarters. While at Jupiter Station he developed a rapport with the cafe manager who connected him to a supplier of genuine coffee beans. After work he enjoys an ale or three, while he went over status reports and modernization plans.
Achievements: Asil took a long time to overcome the events of his teenage years. He considers his commitment to his recovery both physical and mental his greatest achievement. His graduation from the University of Mars was a big step toward the Academy.
Disappointments: For several years he worked with his counselor on his feelings of guilt. He worked hard to face and overcome the feeling that he should have not made it back from. Even though he has come to terms with the loss of his friends, Captain Powers, and most importantly, Jacen, he will still say that he should have died with them.
Illnesses: Due to a vigorous vaccination program on Argelius, Asil was spared the diseases which once ran rampant in the war-torn planet of his ancestors. Other than his replaced femur he has not suffered any prolonged illness or injury.
Strengths: Asil has a very analytical mind. He can dissect a situation and identify threats, assets and liabilities efficiently.
Weaknesses: Asil takes failure very personally, which drives him in some ways but when something does go awry he tends to focus on that failure too much. With assistance from his counselor he has learned to put his failures in a context of a learning experience.
Fears: Asil has a healthy fear/ respect for fire, at least onboard ship. He witnessed first hand the result of fire, the damage, the loss of resources, and unfortunately death when a fire breaks out on board.
Prejudices: Romulans are the founding and sole members of Asil’s “I don’t care for your people” club. But he does acknowledge that there is a difference between a government philosophy and the people as a whole. He knows that the Romulan people as a whole are not violent or malicious, nonetheless he keeps his guard up around that trademark uniform.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Off-duty Asil enjoys comfy clothes, like loos sweatpants and a soft shirt. When going out however he will tend to wear more form fitting clothes, as long as they are not stiff. A nice shirt and slacks with a jacket, in mostly earth tones of browns grays and greens.
Distinguishing Features: Asil has wounds consistent with modern warfare. Most were treated with simple med-kits by unskilled hands and little time for recovery. As a result, he has a scar on his shoulder blade and his right leg. He also has an artificial left femur, the result of his final battle with Romulans. Although this was treated by Starfleet doctors, and he underwent physical therapy his joints tend to ache when he exerts himself too much or he is in humid environments.
Pets: As a child Asil raised many animals, however they were not pets.
Friends: Asil’s first and best friend was Jacen. Unfortunately he died in a battle with Romulans. Asil hangs onto an old Starfleet communicator which he found on a derelict vessel in the Qualor Ship graveyard.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Watching the Seshat take hit after hit, seeing the explosions, the atmosphere escaping, and finally the lights going out from the tractor beam platform gutted Asil.
Best Time: Piloting a ship out of dry dock for the first time for space trials was probably the time when Asil was happiest. To feel a ship; something you put your time, and blood, and sweat into, come to life by your command is pretty exhilarating.
Most Crucial Experience: Asil’s initial Starfleet interview was a turning point for him. He realized that he could not combat his demons alone and all he had to do was ask for help.
Role Model: Captain Rebekah Powers and his Counselor, Commander Veronica “V” Timberlake.
