Personal History

R'Karr Archen was born on Arctic Research Outpost 70 on the edges of the Federation to hish parents, K'Tiir Archen and Fulgrim Ragarrim in July of 2390. In Kzinti society, females are unintelligent, and this was reflected for the first two years that R'Karr's father treated hir. At around hish third birthday. R'Karr began to display the signs of intelligence that Kzinti males had, but hish father didn't notice it until R'Karr began to talk in Kzin. Hish father, being a naturalized Federation citizen, immediately started to educate hish child, because of the Federation's standards of education, but also because he wanted a male child to inherit his legacy. Fulgrim had become a Federation citizen beginning with a Federation work visa program with their colonial outreach programs, and working for fifteen years in the Federation to establish residency and gain his citizenship through naturalization. Since R'Karr was a hermaphrodite, hir became hish father's heir by the virtue of showing sentience. However, what sealed the deal for his father, was the fact that s/he was male dominant, which meant that despite having the necessary reproductive organs, s/he could not bear children due to only the male organs being active.

As R'Karr grew up on Outpost 70, he began to take up hish father's trade of general engineering. Hish father however, received a job offer to move to a colony in the process of being re-established, Terra Nova, and during hish twelveth year, R'Karr moved to Terra Nova with hish family. On Terra Nova, hish family had hish sister, Mzria as they began to assist the colonists in installing radiation protectors and filtration systems. It was here that R'Karr met hish first other hermaphrodite, Corvus 23, a hermat that was assigned as the colony's chief engineer. As a fellow hermaphrodite, Corvus 23 was responsible for R'Karr’s usage of the Hermat pronouns to apply to hirself. K’Taar didn’t take the change in pronouns well, but eventually started using the correct gender pronouns in private. For appearances and society’s sake however, R’Karr made a concession to allow hish father to use the male pronouns in public when needed. During his time on Terra Nova R'Karr began a friendship with Corvus 23 that lasted through R'Karr's seventeenth birthday, when Corvus 23 recommended that R'Karr attend Star Fleet Academy as part of hish engineering training. In the event that s/he washed out of the Academy, there would still be a place for hir on the colony, and with that in mind, R'Karr applied for Star Fleet Academy.

As R'Karr had to go through the entrance exam first, s/he went straight to Earth, as that was where the closest exam was held. Hir was amazed by hish first trip to the captial of the Federation, having been raised on a colony for hish childhood. Hish entrance exam went well, although the psych test was harrowing. Choosing between saving a Kzinti during a radiation leak, or abandoning them to save the colony infrastructure had presented a problem, but R'Karr passed it. Once he entered the Academy, R'Karr gained a number of friends among the Caitians, but also had the unique experience of being friends with the academy’s only Hermat, due to hish hermaphroditic nature. In the end however, R'Karr graduated from the Academy's engineering school without any other friends, due to hish dedication pushing hir past having much time for socialization. Even his Hermat friend dropped out because of lack of team effort, and hish many other Caitian friends never went into Engineering..

After hish graduation from the college of engineering at Star Fleet Academy, R'Karr was assigned on hish cadet cruise to the USS Abuja to patrol the border of the Patriarchy sector. It was on that patrol, that R'Karr got to see more of hish Mirak/Kzinti, in the form of patrols on the opposite side of the border, with even an engineering accident from a Mirak ship, causing it to drift into Federation territory. When authorization was given to assist the Mirak, R'Karr was one of the engineers assigned to repair the ship. Once the crew had repaired the ship, R'Karr's work was recognized by the Mirak and he was given a ceremonial dagger for his service to the Mirak, something of which s/he treasured later on as a piece of hir heritage. Upon returning to base, R'Karr was given hish first assignment to the USS White Dwarf, a position which s/he would eventually rise in the ranks to Assistant Chief Engineer after ten long years of service.

Although hish service aboard the White Dwarf led hir into the Krynar war, the USS White Dwarf was laid up in a repair dock for most of the war, due to some Krynar sabotage and delayed supplies from the war. After the war, R'Karr was assigned to the USS Goddard as its Chief Engineer, where he ended up having hir's first child with a Mirak he had met during the drydock years. Keladari was a Mirak who had applied for a work visa within the Federation, and had ended up at the drydocks helping to repair the White Dwarf when she met R'Karr. Over those few years, R'Karr developed a relationship with Keladari until they married at the end of the Krynar war, and had their first child. It became apparent that R'Karr could only procreate as a male after an examination by Star Fleet Medical as to hish hermaphrodite condition, and that he couldn't self-procreate like Hermat could. However, after hir had the child, R'Karr decided not to have any more children until s/he could spend more time with them, unlike the current situation where Star Fleet took up much of hish time. After two years, R'Karr was reassigned to Star Base Bravo following the recommissioning of the USS Goddard awaiting assignment to another starship.
