Archaeology

Archaeology is the branch of science that studies the distant past, particularly the history of humanoids and their cultures.

Those who study in this field are known as archaeologists. These scientists complete their task with the examining any and all recovered material evidence brought about by the means of digging, and generally upheaving a section of earth on a planet or asteroid.

Since the invention of space travel, archaeology has become one of the most comprehensive fields of work. Not only can archeologists now be experts in another planet's history by way of artifacts, but archeologists have written many papers on the similarities of cultures' histories. Though this field may seem purely academic, the actual processes of excavating and unearthing artifacts can be quite a dangerous feat. Often, mechanical help is used to move the soil until something is found via scans, and then smaller machines or humanoids start their detailed work. The most important aspect of archaeology is the preservation of anything found at a "dig site."

A&A Officer

An Archaeology and Anthropology Officer is a position on Starfleet vessels where the person in question has a specialty in archaeology, anthropology, and/or ancient civilizations.

These types of officers were often on Starbases, and only manned a Starship when on the way to an investigation.
