Personal History

Varania and Velanna were born on Trill. Kolgrim had been away at that time but returned in a few months and settled down for a while to be with his family.

It was apparent as the girls got older that they had completely difference personalities. Her sister Velanna was prone to staying safely at home and studying, while Varania was outside during the day, all day. Varania would spend every daylight moment running, jumping and climbing trees.

Varania was in no way any less intelligent then her sister Velanna, but she seemed to stray away from reading and studying, opting to spend the majority of her time outside. Once the pair started schooling it was surprising that both sisters were above in their classes even though Varania was more of a wild child and studied less than her sister.

At the age of 5, Varania developed a rash all over her body. Although it wasn't life-threatening, it worried her mother that her daughter was exposed to something like that without even knowing that there was anything wrong with where she was in the first place. Although Varania often told her mother that it was okay, that she never got lost because she always knew which direction their home was located in, it still worried her mother daily, not knowing if her daughter would get lost or injured and that being by herself would render her no help if she needed it. It also did not help the fact that Varania loved to spend time by herself instead of going out with the many groups of friend she had.

At the age of 11, Varania had been excused from school to take a 6 month trip with her father, who said that maybe getting her away from the outdoors and into a place completely different might calm her somewhat. Varania and her father headed to Earth so her father could perform the Rite of Emergence on a Trill that was stationed at Starfleet Headquarters. During this time, Varania still spent all of her time outside, wanting to explore the planet and compare what she saw here to what her planet was like. Her father, of course, noticed this and spoke with the Trill that he was there to see, wondering if maybe his daughter could join.

On the return trip, Kolgrim handed her a PADD, it contained information on joining Starfleet and he told her that it would probably be a great career choice for her, seeing as she loved to explore. At that point in time, Varania did not know what she wanted to do, let alone if she wanted to join Starfleet in the first place.

For the next two years, Varania began to deeply think about her future, and decided at the age of 13 that she was going to join Starfleet. Thanks to her father, she was able to get some help figuring out what she wanted to do. With her quick movements and thinking, along with her sense of direction, she decided to choose Tactical.

Between the ages of 13 and 16, she traveled more with her father, gaining some practical knowledge of Piloting and Navigation. Although her father didn't know any tactical maneuvers or strange combat moves, he was sure that the hands on experience would help her in the long run. It was during this time that Varania confessed to her father that she strangely had no will, unlike most Trills, to become joined. He was not upset with her, but told her that it was ok and that she would make something of herself and it wouldn't matter. He also hinted, however, that it was not something she should announce to the world.

When Varania and Kolgrim arrived back on Trill, Velanna had announced to them that she was going to apply to become a Joined Trill. Varania was very happy for her sister and told her that she would support her all the way. Also during that time, Varania sent out her application to Starfleet, waiting anxiously for a reply, which came months later, much to her surprise. After being accepted into Starfleet, Varania quickly packed her things and vowed not to return until she was an officer. It was two years into her stay at the academy when she received a message from her sister Velanna giving her the news that she had not been accepted for a Symbiont. Knowing how much it had meant to her sister to become a joined trill, she suggested that her sister come to visit her on Earth for a while. She never actually found out why her sister wasn't accepted, but she never pressed the issue, knowing that her sister would tell her when she was ready.

Prior to her final exam, Varania was granted a LoA to escort her sister back to their home world. Varania stated that it was a heavy mental blow to her sister, and that she wanted to make sure she was safe and didn't think about harming self (Varania also realized that she would feel just as bad had she not been accepted into Starfleet). Upon leaving Trill, she boarded a shuttle headed for Earth, along with Lieutenant Astysti, and Trill Ambassador/Medical Engineer, Ivar Reuven. On the way to Earth the shuttle's engine had malfunctioned and the Pilot's arms were burned when the console in the co-pilot seat exploded. Varania quickly jumped into the pilot seat while Astysti and Ivar tended to the Pilot. Varania did her best to manually pilot the ship but with the controls all but destroyed it was only a matter of time before they either crashed or lost power completely. Unfortunately for Astysti, Varania was unable to see the large chunk of rock that plowed into the side of the shuttle, dislodging metal debris that impaled Astysti in the head, fatally injuring her. Luckily Ambassador Ivar had actually studied Symbiont removal/transplantation, for just such emergencies and once the shuttle came to a complete stop, Ivar told Varania that the Symbiont had to be transferred immediately because Astysti was fading fast and he would rather use what he had to transfer the Symbiont to a healthy host then risk trying to keep Astysti alive. By the time Varania was rescued and arrived at Earth it had been at least a week and the Symbiont was unable to be removed.

Varania's final exam was delayed by two months while she was evaluated by the academy to make sure she was mentally and physically prepared. During that time Varania's family found out about her accident and she lost all contact with her sister who was suddenly jealous of her sister's Symbiont. Although she was still wasn't sure about being joined and the feelings and memories that were associated with it, the Medical Officer assigned to work with her stated that it wasn't something that she could "cure" or "fix" that it would take time for Varania to get used to the new personalities, but it would not interfere with her duties and she was released to take her final exam

Symbionts

Yaciti- Female. Joined at 19: 2345 - 2360. Occupation: Trill Spy. Yaciti gained a Symbiont after being recognized for her ingenuity and cunning during her trials for the Symbiosis Commission. She then had 2 years trying to find her own way before starting a career as a 'Diplomat' (Read: Spy). She spent 10 years on Bajor before being moved for 3 years to Terok Nor, disguised as a Bajoran under the alias 'Keara Krantz'. During that time she learned Bajoran and Cardassian, and secretly joined the resistance against 'orders' to only gather data. It was after a mining accident, rumored to be caused by the resistance, that it was discovered that she was a Joined Trill. It was unknown by either Government at the time if Yaciti was an active member of the Bajoran Resistance Movement, the prefect of Terok Nor, Gul Dukat, decided to maintain peace with the Trill people and turned Yaciti over to their care. A Trill Ambassador escorted the injured Yaciti back to Trill where the Symbiont was removed 'due to complications'.

Saeda- Female. Joined at 23: 2360 - 2362. Occupation: Trill Science Ministry Researcher. Saeda gained the Symbiont after being recommended by the head of the Science Ministry to take the Anyu Symbiont to absorb the knowledge that Yaciti might have gained from her time on Bajor. Saeda said for many months that there was really nothing of use in Yaciti's memories and the Symbiosis Commission worried that the Symbiont had overwhelmed Saeda and the personality of Yaciti had taken over. Saeda was fatally injured by a phaser when she tried to steal a ship. Her destination was unknown, but her last words were: "We cannot ignore the injustice", which were spoken in Bajoran.

Lucia- Female. Joined at 16: 2362 - 2378. Occupation: Starfleet Tactical Officer. Lucia was born with an IQ of 187, along with eidetic memory. She excelled in school and her ability to completely remember any encounter down to the last detail did not go unnoticed. She was picked for the Anyu Symbiont after it was concluded that her personality was strong enough to not become overwhelmed. At 18 she decided that being on Trill wasn't working out for her and joined Starfleet, hoping to bring new experience to the Symbiont. Even though the last host was a Scientist, Lucia decided to choose Tactical, having always had a wonderful sense of direction. Although she tried to repress it, there was a small hatred in her mind against Cardassians, which she was fully aware from which Host that originated. She served for many years on the USS Bulwark until the ship was destroyed beyond repair and Lucia was severely injured while the ship was stranded in deep space. Due to the lack of power to the ship and medical supplies/training of the other staff, Lucia opted to have the Symbiont removed and implanted into another Trill.

Astysti- Female. Joined at 24: 2378 - 2411. Occupation: Academy Instructor, Medical Division. Astysti had no wish to become a joined trill, so she followed in her brother's footsteps and joined Starfleet, serving as an Ensign aboard the USS Bulwark. Astysti had a serious prejudice against Joined Trill's, and thus her hatred towards Lucia often interfered with her work. When Lucia had her accident, Astysti refused to take the Symbiont, quoting that: "The hideous worm should die!” Astysti found a video message to her from Lucia, recorded in case such an accident should occur. In the message Lucia spoke in a quick detailed speech about being a joined Trill and explained that whatever she may have heard was untrue. Lucia also stated that the host and the Symbiont were only dependent after 93 hours, thus hinting at possible removal if saved in time. Astysti changed her mind just in time to save the Symbiont as she lay on the table in Sickbay. It took a rescue ship 102 hours to make it to the location of the USS Bulwark, well past the window that Lucia had stated. Being unable to take being on the ship after that, Astysti requested a transfer to Earth shortly after her promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade and began to teach Cadets at the Academy. Astysti was impaled in the head by a piece of metal that flew from the side of the shuttle. Being fatally injured, the Trill Ambassador decided quickly that the Symbiont was to be removed and put into the only viable host at the time, Varania.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Tactical & Piloting/Navigation
Academy Minor(s): Holo-Graphic Programming
Hobbies and Pastimes: Spends most of her time in the holodeck, putting herself into situations that would cause a reaction from the Symbiont's previous hosts. This was recommended by her father who said it would help outline what things would affect her the most. If not in the Holodeck, she can be found in Ten Forward socializing and talking.
Short-Term Goals: To prove to herself and others that she is still the same person that she was before The Joining.
Long-Term Goals: After realizing that the last two hosts of her were 'chosen' by accident, she wishes to find some way to keep the Symbionts alive longer while outside of a Trill Host.
Personality: Lively and Outgoing
Sense of Humor: Sarcastic
Phobias: Insectophobia
Likes: To spend time with others or in large groups
Dislikes: Being alone and having nothing to do. She used to spend time alone outside by herself all the time without trouble, but now she hates being alone or bored because she thinks a lot and the old host's memories surface.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Cannot stand to listen to people who complain about something wrong in their life that is so small and meaningless, always trying to remind people that things could be much much worse.
Bad Habits or Vices: Pulls on her right ear almost constantly as if something should be there that isn't.
Achievements: Even with the lack of studying and knack for school related activities, she still was able to graduate very high in her class and strangely enough, she excelled in school over her sister, who studied daily non-stop.
Disappointments: Her exam was postponed due to the Symbiont transfer. Unable to resolve her conflict with her sister.
Illnesses: A small but non life threatening full body rash that was caused by a strange chemical that happened to be in a pool of water she decided to swim in.
Strengths: Possesses excellent hand-eye coordination as well as the ability to make a quick decision on her feet in seconds.
Weaknesses: Medical or Science. Although two of her past hosts have had training of this kind, it is hard for Varania to want to bring up the knowledge or the memories to be able use the information properly.
Fears: Fears meeting anyone that knew her pervious hosts. Wakes up many nights after reliving memories in her dreams.
Prejudices: Cardassians
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Casual; Pants and Shirts
Distinguishing Features: Trademark Trill spots
Pets: N/A
Friends: Corwin Ward, Human Male, 22, Security Officer. Varania and Corwin were introduced by their mutual friend, Skylar. She thought that she could hook them up, but what Skylar didn't know was that Trills viewed romance differently from humans, so the two became great friends instead of having a relationship.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The time that brings Varania the most heartbreak would be the suddenly outright hatred and jealousy from her twin sister once she found out she had to have a Symbiont transplanted. Varania really never wanted to become a Joined Trill and had supported her sister since the day Velanna announced that she was going to become a prospective host. It hurts Varania the most because she was never able to explain what happened to her sister as Velanna will not even listen to anything having to do with her sister.
Best Time: The time Varania spent with her father away from Trill. She and her sister were never really able to spend time with their father because he was always away performing his job, so it gave her a chance to get closer to him. It was also chance for her to go out and explore new places as well as a chance to hone her skills and figure out what she wanted from life.
Most Crucial Experience: It was the point in time that she was away from Trill for two years with her father. After watching and speaking with many of the Joined Trills that he helped she realized that she was different from her people because she did not have the need or will to become joined. It helped her greatly that, even being who he was, her father was going to accept her for who she wanted to be, not what society wanted her to be.
Role Model: Even though lots of people would say that her role model is her father, they are far from wrong. Varania has always looked up to her sister, as her sister was always regarded as "the good one" and "the one not to die young". Her sister does not know this however which was why Varania took the time from the Academy to make sure her sister was okay and that she knew that it was not the end of the world, but a door opening to a new beginning.
