Antiproton

An antiproton is the antimatter counterpart of a proton.

Antiprotons are stable, but are typically short-lived, since any collision with a proton will cause both particles to be annihilated in a burst of energy.

This antiparticle has been detected by Humans first in cosmic rays, and then in galactic magnetic fields.

Weapons

A beam of pure antiprotons is an incredibly destructive weapon. Such weapons have been used in order to destroy planets.

  • Antiproton beam - a confined beam of antiprotons, similar to a proton beam in that it is tightly focused, able to penetrate any shield even if the modulations were changed.
  • Antiproton cannon - a directed energy weapon based on antiprotons

Medical Use

Antiproton chambers are used in antiproton therapy sessions, which counteract the genetic unspooling caused by acute radiation syndrome using a recombination process.

Fun Facts:

  • The Crystalline Entity left behind a trail of antiprotons, which allowed it to be tracked.
  • Romulan disruptors left a characteristic trace of residual antiprotons, which can be used to date when the weapon was fired.
  • The Jem'Hadar used antiproton beams to detect cloaked ships.
  • In 2372, The Doctor on the USS Voyager used bursts of antiprotons from the warp core in order to reverse the effects of hyper-evolution two crewmembers.
This cowboy medical method worked by destroying the mutated segments of DNA, and restored the crewmembers to normal with little reprecussions.
  • The use of a cloaking device often left residual antiprotons that could expose the ship's presence.
