Antedeans are an intelligent civilization, native to the Alpha Quadrant. They are a species of fish-like humanoids from the planet Antede III.
Similar in size to many other humanoids, they are capable of bipedal motion, and have brain structures that allow them to be easily read by telepaths.
Antedeans as a race are reclusive, and find space flight extremely traumatic.
Some of this species prefer to survive the ordeal of space travel by entering a self-induced catatonic state. Upon arrival at the end of a voyage, Antedeans require great quantities of food, known as vermicula, to replenish their bodies.
Prior to 2365, few humans had seen an Antedean in the flesh.
In 2365, this civilization was offered membership in the United Federation of Planets. The USS Enterprise-D escorted two Antedian dignitaries to a conference, where the Antedians were to be given a formal opportunity to join the Federation. However, immediately prior to the conference, Ambassador Troi revealed that they were in fact assassins. These Antedians had instead planned on blowing up the entire conference, and so instead were detained on the Enterprise.
By 2380, this species had joined the Federation.
