Personal History

==Early life==

Alex was born on Earth into a very fast paced and proper family life. Every member of his immediate family was involved, one way or another, with music and/or art, due to their cultural background and traditions. His parents, Jennifer and Theodore Ankar were both excellent musicians and had both established themselves as pioneers of recreating the orchestral and classical wonders of the greatest composers the human race had ever seen, presenting and organising it to be shown to all races and ages. Alongside this they used their expansive knowledge to teach others the workings of classical music and composed their own modern day masterpieces.

With such an organized and professional upbrining, Alex was automatically expected to become a classical music connoisseur in order to spread the tradition and continue the fame and prosperity of the Ankar family name. However it was obvious from a very young age that, despite his interest in music, Alex was not concerned with channelling his life into this single direction and was much more of a tearaway. His impulsive and reckless personality as a child meant he had no way of defining any kind of future for himself, despite his parent’s attempts to indoctrinate him into their way of thinking. By the age of 10, Alex had not committed himself properly to any orchestral instruments and he preferred to play popular songs on his guitar. His entire childhood was based around doing the exact opposite of what his parents wanted, rebelling against their delicate system and establishing his position as the problem child. His teenage years were fraught with misbehaviour and skipping music lessons. Alex’s private tutor Geoffrey Whittington seemed to be the only adult who understood and sympathized with Alex’s predicament and unwillingness to be a puppet to his mother and father. By this time, he had a younger brother and sister of whom he saw very little. They were quite happy to follow their parents' wishes and they disappeared off into the world that was waiting for them, never giving Alex a chance to get to know them them well at all.

Alex’s best friend Salka always stuck by him through this time and Alex valued her understanding greatly, having never been able to go to public school and make many friends. When the pair were both 18, a small string quartet that were meant to be entertaining at a college event were not able to attend. Completely stranded and with no backup plan (and far too proud to cancel such a formal event), Alex’s parents ushered Alex and Salka onto the stage in a state of panic, hoping their combined knowledge would enable them to improvise a piece in the interim. However, they both refused. The pair simply stood on stage, facing each other – motionless. Outraged at such an attempt to scar their family’s famous name, Salka was expelled from the college and Alex was disowned and forced to leave their home. Salka went home, distraught and public education-bound, Alex however was homeless and had nowhere to go.

Although aged 18, Alex had no home and very few possessions. Fortunately his old private tutor had heard about his situation and allowed Alex to stay with him so he could try and build some kind of life from the wreckage his parents had left him with. The following few years, Alex toughened himself up, teaching himself martial arts and general self defence. He continued basic mathematical and English skills with his tutor, and now carer, Geoffrey. At age 22, Alex emerged as a hardened and emotionally scarred young man. Feeling lost and confused, Alex turned to the last hope of giving his life purpose and a possibility of proving not just to his parents, but to himself, that he could achieve great things without them. Alex committed to Star Fleet, with no second thoughts or regrets.

USS Darwin, GEC-9000 - Security Officer

Alex’s first assignment was to the USS Darwin. The young Midshipman’s time here was more than a little brief and he found himself thrown in at the deep end – standing on the bridge of a prestigious Star Fleet exploration vessel watching an organic alien vessel dying on the viewscreen. Naturally, this came as a shock to the system and any previous ideas of starting off in a cool and calculated fashion weere immediately discarded. The Darwin was decommissioned not long after Alex’s arrival and he spent a short while at Starbase Alpha, hoping to meet some new people before his next assignment. Ankar’s time on SBA was one of extreme highs and lows – a bust up with a fellow security officer (completely unintentional on his part) left Alex feeling more alone than ever, suddenly leaving what small amount of safety he’d had didn’t seem like such a great idea. However, Alex also met one Midshipman Candice Baker, a young and attractive security Midshipman like him. Although he didn’t know her very well yet, he was immediately attracted her, beyond simple physical connection, for reasons he wasn’t sure of at the time. She would join him, along with several of the other officers he’d met on SBA, on his new assignment.

USS Drake, CL-2509 - Security Officer

Bound for the USS Drake, the excitement and buzz of being a Star Fleet officer returned. Under the wing of COS Benjamin Vaughn, Alex was eventually promoted to Ensign and enjoyed a fairly productive turn of duty onboard the Drake. During a terrible accident at the hands of one of the ship’s engineers, Alex suffered a large head trauma and was out of action for a short while. The injury reminded the plucky young officer of his mortality and that he was yet to see the real deal – a real mission. This was still the case shortly after as the Drake was also decommissioned just before the next mission could get properly under-way. Alex’s time on the Drake had been only moderately more eventful than his brief time aboard the Darwin – the young man still didn’t have a ship he could call home.

USS Dauntless, BC-1553 - Alpha Team Leader

It wasn’t long before Ankar’s next assignment was thrust upon him, this time with unbelievable prospects. The USS Dauntless, an Avenger class Battle Cruiser and only 1 of 2 of its type in the fleet, was to be Alex’s new ship. The idea of being on a warship on the front lines excited him in way that made any fear negligible. Fortunately he did not have to make acquaintance with a new crew as the whole manifest of the Drake was transferred with him. Once again with Candice and Ben, Alex was able to develop and mature, both as a Star Fleet officer but also as a human being in general. Being put in charge of the Dauntless' elite Security response team gave him elements of command ability and front line action. He climbed the ranks once more, reaching Lieutenant just before his second mission. His relationship with Candice become more intimate and involved and a bond between them began to blossom. For now, it seemed, Alex was with his friends at the front, right where he needed to be.

USS Ticonderoga, CA-1471 - Chief of Security

After several years service aboard the Dauntless, Alex was on the move again. This time, much to his surprise, he was promoted to Chief of Security and assigned to the USS Ticonderoga. The experience of having to move so far from his comfort zone and into great responsibility forced a steep learning curve onto the young Lieutenant. However, this did nothing if not made him a more mature officer and, perhaps unexpectedly, made him more relaxed. Alex has begun using his sense of humour to reasonable effect around his fellow officers – not always with their approval. After settling in, Ankar found the Ticonderoga to be very different from the Dauntless and did not make any good friends initially. His feelings of loneliness were not helped by having to leave his love interest – Candice Baker – behind on the Dauntless. The Ticonderoga crew was assigned the task of obtaining Ferengithium as part of the effort to save the Romulan home system from destruction via supernova. This was to be a task that would end in the crew performing favours for the Grand Nagus himself - explicitly the reclamation of his holiday resort that had been taken over by a rogue AI. The mission, and it's preceded events, did not test Alex's ability as a Department Head and it continued to feel like a position he could quite slot into - not the Ticonderoga a ship in which he could fit in. Almost immediately after the mission's eventual success and the acquisition of the Ferengithium, Alex was moved even higher up the chain of command. It seemed that the young man's reservations served only to prove that he was destined for better things - whether he realised it or not.

USS Sheridan, DD-4086 - First Officer

New Responsibilities

In a flurry of orders, transfers and official documents, Alex was promoted again and ordered to the USS Sheridan where he would assume the position of her First Officer. He was young, too young in his own eyes, and the responsibilities bestowed upon him were daunting to say the least. Captain Dramar, who was the CO on Alex's arrival, helped the young man get settled in - leaving him to perform of his own accord in command of the bridge during his first mission as a Lieutenant Commander. The Sheridan was to join the Fourth Fleet in responding to a Carrayan distress call. With the discovery of ungoverned Klingon attackers, Alex commanded the ship and her crew in a rapid response operation to recapture the system and aid other vessels post-combat. His own performance surprised him and the actions required of the command position seemed to feel somewhat more natural to Alex - his confidence and competence were at last getting a chance at serious exposure. With the promotion and departure of Dramar, the young officer soon discovered that the induction of the new CO was to reunite him with old friend and boss, Benjamin Vaughn.

Alex's command abilities were to be suitably tested once more as the Sheridan set a course to Dalmatia - a super system of over 100 planets - along with the Pegasus, Philadelphia and Copernicus. Assigned with the task of exploring the frozen world of Telbar, the crew of the Sheridan quickly discovered a colossal gravity generator - one of several across the system - that was both potentially responsible for the gathering of so many celestial bodies and now in a state where it could fail and shut down. With the lives of countless millions at risk, an Away Team led by Ankar was beamed down to Telbar's surface in order to find the generator and attempt to repair it, thus averting a disaster. Close firefights with an automated drone army, not discovered by initial sensor scans from orbit, caused problems for the team, but the eventual outcome was success after some excellent teamwork from the other officers. Alex returned to the Sheridan without losing anybody, a personal achievement and great relief to the First Officer, and was promoted to Commander and awarded a Gold Star. By this point, news had spread about the fall of Bajor and the loss of SS-18 and SBC, so the Sheridan was reassigned to the First Fleet where Alex was to take his new rank and push onto tougher proving grounds.

The Sheridan's reassignment to the First Fleet meant that it would have Star Base Alpha, and by extension Earth, as its home base. Alex saw this as an opportunity to finally seal the disparity between himself and his family, so during shore leave, when the news of the Inquisitors was spreading throughout Federation Space, he went down to Earth and back to the family music college where he hoped to find his parents...and maybe some closure on their opinions. He soon learnt that his Father had died in his sleep only a few years before, prompting the man to ask himself - and his only surviving parent - why he had not been informed. It became apparent that the animosity and the blank acceptance over Alex's decision to join Star Fleet had changed very little over the years. It angered him how his mother said he had 'chosen to leave' and once again he stormed away from his family home. This time for good. However, this did not leave Alex in the emotional mess that he had expected - rather it made him realise how he was finally ready to make his life what he wanted it to be. He had chosen his path, abandoned the family that had cared little for his desires in life, and was finally finding some comfort in his position as First Officer. Thoughts of worry arose surrounding his rapid advancement through the ranks and if inexperience might leave him at a disadvantage, but he did all that he could to suppress them as the Sheridan's most important mission to date began.

Trials and Errors

If the trip to Dalmatia hadn't brought Alex close enough to his death, then the Sheridan's next encounter was just the staring contest with the abyss that he needed. With the Inquisition invasion in full swing, the Sheridan and the Gettysburg were to head out together and assess the damage at Bajor. Finding no trace of any Shard vessels on arrival, the two ships ventured into the Gamma Quadrant where they would find the Inquisition in full force. An intense battle followed and they were plunged into what seemed like unwinnable and inescapable situations over and over again. It was during this mission that Alex became fully aware and at one with the likelihood of his death at the hands of his job. Fear, particularly that of the loss of his own self, followed these moments, but it was only once they managed to escape the Shard (partially thanks to the intervention of the Dominion and having gathered a modest amount of information about their weapons and capabilities) that he was able to conceptualise these feelings and realised their place as reactionary forces, rather than constructive ones. Alex had finally become the Command officer that he was meant to be. His desire to see the ship and its crew flourish, moreso than himself, grew stronger day by day.

Whilst escorting Ambassador Grant to Cardassia, the Sheridan bore the brunt of a whole host of fresh problems and bizarre tangents. Alex witnessed first-hand the effects of a destructive and horrifying virus, a replicator/transporter malfunction that poured acid on innocent crewmembers and once again came into contact with the Krynar threat, this time at Minos Korva. It was during this mission that Alex also got his first taste of galactic diplomacy, coming toe-to-toe with the senior council of Minos Korva as they were faced with the galaxy's new public enemy number one. His refusal to coat the discussion with niceties resulted in disdain from the council, but Alex believed he had found a niche in telling it like it was - whether it was desirable or not. Some tactical suggestions from the Commander helped bring a pyrrhic victory to Star Fleet, and Alex was all too aware how close they had come to their deaths. Prior to becoming a Command officer, he had never considered the shift in responsibilities should wartime break out. For better or worse, it would force him to question his priorities once again - did he really want to be in full command? And if so, what change would be required to safeguard his self-confidence? The extended shore leave that followed gave Alex a chancer to reflect on these thoughts and to consider any disconnection between the things he believed and the actions he took.

After a well needed break, the Sheridan was given a mission that Alex hoped would break the flow of her exhausting encounters with the Krynar. The ship travelled back to Bajor to analyse the fallout of such a tragedy, but they ended up changing objectives when an unusual signal led them to a nearby nebula. After deducing that there was a ship inside, Alex led the first shuttle along with Roth and new arrival Sharpe. To the Commander's surprise, they discovered an old NX class starship - the Challenger - that was undamaged and powered down, now little more than a museum that was out of reach. Nonetheless, Alex took an away team on board and, in between the literal skeleton crew, they tried to piece together the ship's final moments. Before a story could be forged however, a strange psychotic virus seemed to grip several members of the away team and Alex was a witness to Roth, under the influence of the virus, stabbing their engineer Byron to death. The away team hurried back to the Sheridan for safety and Alex considered how he might've handled such a situation better, whilst simultaneously trying to work with Doctor Boorman on how to proceed after such a strange event. The First Officer was adamant that Roth should not be treated as a murderer.

Sheridan At War

Before the mystery of the Challenger could be solved, the Sheridan was called back to Sector 001 on emergency orders - the Krynar had struck again and this time they were even more bloodthirsty, hitting several Federation worlds at once. The Sheridan engaged the enemy at Tellar along with the First Fleet, destroying Krynar targets of unknown importance with relatively few issues, but the continued galaxy-wide destruction began to ebb away Alex's confidence in a peaceable resolution - there appeared to be no way to reason with their foe. The trials to withstand against the Krynar began to serve, the Commander believed, as good evidence that little could truly be done against such power and that violent response was encouraging their enemy to kill more. But to his dismay, the Krynar inexplicably retreated from battle, pulling all forces away from the Federation defenders. A limping Sheridan once again returned to Star Base Alpha, her FO no longer sure what to think any more.

The upper echelons of Star Fleet eventually decided that there was only one solution to the Krynar threat - an assault on their homeworld. Alex saw this as a terrible act and was becoming concerned of what Star Fleet was becoming. He toyed with the idea of refusing to join the attacks, but eventually gave in with little resistance. The Sheridan joined the Titan and an escort of engineering ships with the objective of constructing and protecting the gate that would provide the fleet with a means to get home post-combat. Yet more questions were raised as a mysterious third party appeared to intervene with their invasion, but the end result was a pyrrhic victory for the Federation forces. As the motherships were disabled, Ankar suggested beaming some of the doomed Krynar aboard in an effort to show mercy and learn more about their enigmatic enemy. This was to prove disastrous. A self-destruct mechanism in their biomechanical suits was set off immediately after transport, resulting in the near destruction of the Iso Labs. Alex escaped relatively unharmed, but witnessed several of his crewmates needing emergency treatment. The fleet returned safely to Earth and the crew were given an extended shore leave, the bitterness of war having taken it out of them. The Commander's confidence in peaceful resolution, particularly under the observation of a hawkish admiralty, had been shaken considerably.

Post-war and Death

With the Sheridan repaired and restored to active duty after extended shore leave, the crew were ushered to the Myaran system. A field team observing a pre-warp civilization had gone dark and a potential mysterious 3rd party was to be considered - the Krynar were a prime suspect. Alex had made the most of his shore leave, but felt thrown back almost immediately into the fire. Nonetheless, the Sheridan arrived at Myar V and the Away Team sent to the surface, led by Ankar, scoured the field team's hideout. Finding nothing but reports of a mysterious illness that caused its victims to vanish, the team headed deeper into the complex, eventually finding themselves infected too. The vanishing turned out to be slavers run by the th'Dila family transporting the Myaran natives onto a prison ship, with the field team - and now the Away Team - getting caught up in it too. Ankar and the others were imprisoned for a short while, but amid a growing plan to escape, a CID agent disguised as a member of the slavers' crew broke them out. The Sheridan was able to find the cloaked prison ship and rescue the Away Team and the Myarans. During the process, the Commander was quick to try and keep the situation controlled, knowing full well that he was encountering his first command experience with the Prime Directive. Lieutenant Maria Pedersen found herself ordered back to the Sheridan by the Commander after she became argumentative - Alex's attempts to keep her focussed only making her angrier still. Derek Sharpe also found himself close to Alex's ire as their differing personalities and outspokenness continued to cause friction.

At the end of mission, when being beamed back to his ship, Alex Ankar failed to materialise in the Sickbay of the USS Sheridan, DD-4086. No exact cause of this failure was ascertained by the crew or as a result of the following minor investigation, however it was later theorised by Transporter Physicist Mardell Econi that a pattern phase triggered by quantum discrepancies around the Myaran system had locked the annular confinement beam at the point of Ankar's transport - supposed to be a 1 in 965,500,000 chance in those given circumstances. Alex was considered MIA on stardate 201412.15.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security, Close Combat, Weapons Training
Academy Minor(s): Tactics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Despite music being a big part of his painful memories, Alex still enjoys playing his guitar and listening to classical music from Earth. He also enjoys a good book or holodeck session now and then.
Short-Term Goals: To effectively oversee the wellbeing of the Sheridan crew; form closer relationships with the senior staff
Long-Term Goals: To get the opportunity to captain a ship and lead the crew to success and harmony.
Personality: Has a casual command style and can be jocular and eccentric when being friendly. Alex tries his best to be respectful, but finds it hard not to be outwardly and bluntly opinionated about matters at hand. Has strong principles in ethical circumstances, for better or worse, and considers combat to be a last resort. He is very reflective and often tangles with internal dilemmas - causing unnecessary anxiety - but this can sometimes be a bonus when faced with complex decisions.
Sense of Humor: Alex always tries to give himself and others as many reasons as possible to laugh, he loves slapstick and quick wit
Phobias: Possibly due to his upbringing, Alex fears silence
Likes: Respects modesty. Alex also enjoys old films and television programmes and anything with a retro or rustic feel to it.
Dislikes: Doesn't like to be spoken for or have his made made up for him. Excessive or mindless use of force or formality.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Those that would insist their own 'hard done-by' or self-important nature upon others
Bad Habits or Vices: Alex tends to drum and tap surfaces when not occupied
Achievements: Alex believes it is an achievement in itself to be the first one to stand up to his parents, to do what he wants to do and simply to be where he is today
Disappointments: He is disappointed that he never got to know his brother or sister very well
Illnesses: No major illnesses, only fractures and a broken arm achieved by fighting and training himself
Strengths: Tries hard to be as empathetic as possible. Fast learner and experienced at motivating fellow crewmates.
Weaknesses: Relatively poor with maths and science. Can let his emotions and his desire to avoid conflict cloud judgements.
Fears: Those that cannot be reasoned with.
Prejudices: Alex has had trouble shaking the view that Klingons are self indulgent and their pretences of 'honour' serve only themselves and not their people as a whole. He finds them, and others like them, tiring to work with.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Has taken to wearing simple, loose clothing of late, as he is in uniform and on duty more often. The old military style jacket hasn't been worn for some time.
Distinguishing Features: Deep eyes that are two toned-outer green rim, inner brown rim. Dimpled chin
Pets: None
Friends: Salka Gunnarson has been best friends with Alex since they met as his parent’s music college. She was a young singer, aged 9, with hopes of choral stardom and the pair met by chance at one of Alex’s parent’s events he was forced to attend. She is currently the same age and Alex looks up to her greatly, always hoping that one day he could be just as popular and accepting as she is. She is always understanding and ready to give advice or guidance and never judges anyone immediately. The two are very close in their relationship, so much so – one might confuse them for being a couple – but they have long ago established that nothing of such will ever happen between them. Once Alex became heavily involved in Star Fleet, he lost contact with Salka and, despite asking his Mother, has no idea where she is now, or if she is even still alive.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Being disowned and forced to leave home by his hard nosed and demanding parents when 18 due to his refusal to become the child musician prodigy they wanted him to be.
Best Time: Being given the opportunity to join Starfleet made Alex feel he had some purpose in life, a new sense of being and a farewell gesture to his awkward upbringing
Most Crucial Experience: With no place to live, no close by family to turn to and no possessions to his name, after being disowned by his parents, Alex opened his eyes and became very careful as to who to trust. Much of Alex’s opinionated personality and internal rumination was shaped by this event.
Role Model: Through all his difficulties, Alex’s best friend Salka always stuck by him. Alex always looks up to her due to her good nature, undying generosity and forgiveness, and popularity – traits that Alex has been trying to emulate from the day they first met - with mixed success.
