Personal History

To really know Amaya one would have to know her parents. Dimilas was a merchant, one among those that had gathered enough money to get out from under a Corporation and afford a ship of their own. In his case, he had sold his house on Trill to afford the rather hefty sum, but according to his planning he would have the investment returned as profit in a year or two at the worst. Of course, this could be due to him being fortunate enough to be the host to the Stormgate symbiont, and having access to the wealth of experience had definitely tipped the scales in his favor dealing with the many races living in the Alpha Quadrant.

During one such business trip to the Vulcan city of Shi'Kahr, he was celebrating a good profit when he overheard a scientist a few tables away tell others about a theory of hers concerning an event in the past his symbiont gave him firsthand knowledge of. Standing up from his stool, he moved over to correct the Vulcan girl, and somehow ended up talked into a corner trying to explain what he remembered happening despite not being old enough by far to have been physically present at the event.

After he -- reluctantly -- told her about the symbiont after making her promise not to give away his secret, the two of them met more often, Val'Danath asking questions to add to her notes and Dimilas finding it strangely refreshing to talk freely about the old memories in his head for once. Over time, the questions started getting more personal, and the two of them started becoming good friends, keeping in touch when his business trips took him off of Vulcan. After a few years -- during which Dimilas found himself heading towards Vulcan more and more often -- he finally asked her... on a date. They had gone out together before, of course, but not for romantic reasons, and it didn't help that his symbiont was as inexperienced as he was when it came to Vulcan reactions to being asked out.

Fortunately it all went well, and after another five years -- of whom six months living on board of his ship -- he finally popped the question, and Val'Danath accepted. The couple got married on Trill a few months later, and a little over a year later Amaya was born. Their happiness was not to last long however, as the shuttle Dimilas was on made an emergency landing in a swamp area when Amaya was three, and the complications of several insect bites caused him to become severely ill. Fearing he might die, his younger brother Marento was granted temporary leave to visit his brother.

Marento was a fairly competent Captain of a decently sized vessel in the Trill military. In terms of Command, he didn't stand out much compared to other, more promising officers, but he enjoyed the relative calm it allowed him. When word reached him of the rapidly worsening condition of his brother, he was granted leave and booked a transport to the planet his ship had been near. Once there, it quickly became clear how severe the situation was, and he arrived a day before his brother's death.

As the circumstances would have it, Marento turned out to be the only Trill on board to be a suitable host for the Stormgate symbiont (the other three Trill among the crew didn't pass the test). After the symbiont was passed on, he presided over his brother's funeral, after which the question was raised of what was going to happen now. The truth was that the freighter was getting too old, his sister-in-law had all but retreated into meditation when she wasn't spending time with Amaya and he found himself struggling to cope with the massive amount of memories stuffed into his skull. After a meeting with the officers of the ship, the Tellarite First Officer offered to buy the ship and continue trading, to which they reached an agreement.

After making the arrangements, he went back to his own ship, hoping that having something to do would both help him come to terms with his memories as well as get Val'Danath out of her depression. The fact that he knew she was depressed -- and was able to accurately read Vulcan emotions -- was one of the new memories he needed to get used to as well, he realized, and with a little luck he would solve everything at once.

The only glitch in his plan however was that Val'Danath wasn't certified to be a crew member aboard a military vessel. Pulling a few strings, he arranged permission to get her on board as a civilian scientist, a position which to his relief seemed to work in helping her come to terms with her husband's death. He tried to help her in raising Amaya as well, though being a former Marine his share mostly covered training exercises and sparring matches. He wasn't much of a brainiac himself, and so he decided to simply keep doing what he was good at and leave the rest to others. In return, she would help him keep his quarters tidy and assist him with writing reports, two things which he had never grown to like much himself. This lasted for two more years, after which he received a message from Trill Command to return to the home planet.

Once there, it turned out he was being tried for reassociation. Despite his friends' attempts to cover him, Command had somehow gotten wind of the situation, and despite the Court not having any direct proof, the amount of circumstantial evidence in the time they spent near one another was believed to be sufficiently overwhelming. With a minor majority in favor, Marento was found guilty, and was subsequently fired from his post, and exiled from Trill society. Command of his ship was transferred to a promising young officer of the same type he had seen come and go on many previous occasions.

This was a hard blow to Marento, but this time it would be Val'Danath's turn to repay the favor he had given her two years ago. Getting in touch with the Tellarite First Officer again, she found that he was now in charge of his own shipping company. After explaining the situation, he hired them as Captain and Science officer on board his latest ship, feeling that he owed it to them for old times' sake. Marento managed to essentially pick up where he had left off relatively soon given that the basic maneuvers were the same, and the Stormgate symbiont offered him Dimilas' knowledge of trading.

Time passed, and Amaya was by now a healthy eleven year old girl. She remembered little of her father, but saw her uncle as her second father regardless, and enjoyed the combat lessons she was getting. Though her uncle was a good bit taller and muscular, her enhanced strength still made her put up a decent fight, and after having been caught off guard by it he stopped underestimating her as well. While her mother was teaching her the sciences, she slowly became more proficient in combat arts as well, slowly becoming able to outfight a good part of the crew (much to the amusement of other crew members).

But again, this situation did not last, and the turning point came when they were carrying a shipment of emergency supplies to Starbase Nineteen, which had been hit by a major power failure a few days before. It had been a race of sorts to be the first on the scene with supplies, but the balance seemed to shift in their favor for now, and it looked like their company would be the first this time. This would be the last thing Marento would think, as at that time the USS Bismarck's quantum torpedoes slammed into the bridge.

The ship rocked from the impact, and it didn't take much to figure out this was much worse than any malfunction. In the aft section of the ship, Val'Danath realized from the way the ship rocked that the navigational thrusters were having a hard time compensating, and a swift status report from the computer confirmed her fears. Wasting little time, she pushed her daughter into one of the ejection pods before moving to another, but failed to launch in time, and her pod got caught in the explosion of their ship.

Amaya could only watch helplessly as the military vessel destroyed everything she knew, killed everyone she loved, the markings of Starfleet seared into her mind long before the flash from the exploding freighter temporarily blinded her. The shockwave struck the pod, but it held under the pressure, and ended up throwing her clear of the blast of exploding fuel. The impact threw her head against the wall though, and by the time she woke up she was on the Sick Bay of a civilian vessel that had detected her life signs as the pod floated within their sensor range. Still being a legal minor she was assigned to a cousin of her father's, living on Earth.

Needless to say, Amaya was by then less than thrilled at the idea of having anything to do with Starfleet, though reading up on the available options she started thinking. Starfleet had done its best to cover up the 'incident', and she wanted to make them regret it. However, the only two known powers that could match Starfleet were the Klingons and the Romulans, and so she started digging a little deeper. The Romulans were quickly eliminated as well, their nature tending more towards politics in her mind anyway. The Klingons however seemed like an ideal choice to make: They were a warrior race, combat so much a part of their culture that she saw it as unlikely the two Empires would be able to maintain the uneasy peace between them. And if she'd be there on that day, she would make Starfleet pay for their treachery. And the best part was that she didn't even have to do anything for it! In preparation, she started learning Klingon, claiming it was to 'study foreign cultures better.'

Aged fifteen now, Amaya ran away from home, using her savings to bribe her way on board of a smuggling vessel heading for Klingon space with the intention of being dropped off in an area where the patrols were less perceptive due to the money the cartels were giving them. After a few days, she arrived on Qo'noS with barely a possession, but a firm goal in reaching the Hall of Novitiates and becoming a member of the Klingon Empire. Though not having much firsthand knowledge, she had been reading Klingon books for a while now, and hoped they would compensate for the most part. Not for the first time, she was grateful for inheriting her mother's intelligence.

Taking a deep breath, she tied her hair back, and started to climb the mountain that would be the first of her Trials...
