Maddie grew up in a supportive yet demanding family in the large city of Kansas City. Her father worked for the police department of Kansas City, her mother a former educator. Maddie had a busy life as a child and it continued into her teenage and adulthood years. She did enjoy the busyness of it. She would often try something new if she felt things becoming too stagnant. Maddie wasn’t someone who could sit still for long. The summer before her graduation from high school she completed an internship with the police department that employed her father. The work she did began her interest and eventual career after high school. She participated in several clubs, athletics as well as leadership activities. She and her brother Marcus enjoyed participating in martial arts together, specializing in taekwondo. Her sister Marta was quite older than she, however, they enjoyed being together, and Maddie confided in her sister.
Graduating in the top twenty-five of a large high school class, Maddie enrolled and completed Police Academy immediately. Her parents were overjoyed that Maddie chose to follow her father into law enforcement, though surprised. They assumed it would have been their son to do so. Marcus did choose law enforcement, though through Star Fleet Academy and security. He’s now a full Lieutenant aboard the USS Yorktown. Maddie’s other sibling, Marta, followed her mother’s footsteps, becoming an elementary teacher. All three siblings and parents remain in touch with one another.
After graduation from the police academy, Maddie began her law enforcement career in Kansas City. Her probationary trainer James Allen was tougher on Maddie than the other new officers and she internally questioned her choice of careers. Finally, after discussing her predicament with Marta, Maddie confronted James. Maddie found out that James was tough on her due to his feelings for her. Needless to say, Maddie was taken aback at first but eventually agreed to try dating. They kept it a secret from the department for as long as possible. They finally married two years later and had a son as she was twenty-three. Maddie continued her employment, however, moved into the area of crime scene investigation, an interest of hers.
As her life was going well, at twenty-five, her husband James was killed in the line of duty. This caught Maddie off guard and has taken a lot to recover from her grief. As she took family leave, she began evaluating her life. She didn’t feel comfortable staying with the police department and after much deliberation, she eventually retired. Prompted by Marcus, her brother, she enrolled in Star Fleet.
Life as a single mother and restarting her career was a difficult one for her, but the academy was a good choice for her. It provided the structure and learning that she craved and eventually graduated, concentrating on investigations. Maddie has served aboard the USS Aurora and the USS Hood, as well as assisting on several investigations elsewhere.
Maddie makes friends easily and has many acquaintances, however, only a few close friends. Besides her siblings, one of Maddie’s close friends was one she met on her first tour of duty. Mary Beth Franks served as Maddie’s departmental boss in investigative services. Not only did Mary Beth become a mentor for Maddie, but they became close friends as well as their children. It was Mary Beth who initiated Maddie’s interest in becoming an instructor at the academy. While Maddie and her son enjoyed living on a space ship, she wanted something more stable for her son.
