Red Alert

Red alert light aboard a Constitution Class Refit.

A red alert (also condition red or code red) is a Star Fleet alert signal that indicates a critical situation aboard the vessel or installation – it is the highest alert status. A red alert is ordered for various situations, such as when a ship prepares for combat, is being boarded, a radiation exposure, security alert, massive systems failure, imminent warp core breach, evacuation order, or other serious emergencies. A red alert can be activated manually by the officer in charge, or can be activated automatically by the computer when a ship is attacked.

During a red alert, interior lights are dimmed, red alert lights flash and an alarm blares. After 60 seconds, the alarm shuts off. Weapon systems and shields are brought to full power. Critical systems are secured. The crew’s state of readiness goes to General Quarters Two.

Yellow Alert

Yellow alert light aboard a Galaxy Class.

A yellow alert (also condition yellow) is a Star Fleet alert signal that indicates a state of significantly increased readiness for a possible emergency situation aboard a vessel or installation. A yellow alert is ordered in preparation for an emergency situation, such as combat or environment. A yellow alert can be activated manually by the officer in charge, or automatically by the computer when an unknown or hostile vessel is detected or when certain system malfunctions are detected.

During a yellow alert, yellow alert lights are activated (but don’t flash). A ship’s defenses are energized and shields brought online, however weapon systems remain offline.

In this status, a ship's defense fields are energized, and/or the deflector shields are brought to full power, however the weapons systems remain off-line. The crew’s state of readiness goes to General Quarters One.

Green Alert

A green alert (also condition green or cruise mode) is a Star Fleet alert status that indicates regular operating conditions aboard a vessel or installation. This is the normal, everyday status aboard vessel. A green alert can be changed to any other alert status by the officer in charge.

Blue Alert

Blue Alert aboard an Intrepid Class, the USS Voyager.

A blue alert (also condition blue or code blue) is a Star Fleet alert signal that indicates a state of readiness aboard a starship in preparation for docking or departure, and for landing operations and separation maneuvers aboard vessels that have the capability. A blue alert can only be activated manually by the officer in charge.

During a blue alert, blue alert lights are activated and flash, while an alarm blares. The alarm switches off after 60 seconds. The crew mans their code blue stations, which can include occupying a secondary bridge (for separation) or preparing docking hatches.

Grey Mode

Grey mode is a Star Fleet alert signal that indicates that a starship or installation is running on reserve power while still maintaining operating status. A grey mode alert is issued for times of crisis, when energy and resources need to be budgeted, or during a tactical situation when running in grey mode is advantageous. Grey mode can only be issued by the officer in charge.

During a grey mode, the ship or installation runs on reserve power by cutting power to non-essential decks and systems. These systems include:

Replicators may be used for recycling non-essential items, to increase the amount of raw matter and to extend the energy resources of the ship.

Grey mode may also be combined with Red Alert.
