Personal History

Early Life

Aileen grew up in Northern Ontario in an isolated community of back-to-nature seekers. Her mother visited the area on a research trip and a passionate, if short-lived, romance between Geoff and Linra culminated in Aileen's birth. Within months, Linra returned to Bajor, cutting ties with the excuse that she 'wasn't interested' in motherhood or remaining on Earth. In case she ever changed her mind, Geoff gave Aileen her mother's family name, but styled it in the local manner to help her integrate, to mixed results. Geoff was conscientious of his one-time lover's heritage, and made sure the daughter she left behind knew her mother's heritage, no matter how much the community was unsettled by the reminder of Aileen's uniqueness. Aileen was an avid student of Bajoran culture and beliefs, and research into the life of the Emissary both fueled an interest in Starfleet and raised cooking from an annoying chore to a delicate art. Geoff's stories of her mother's work and the community vegetable gardens only drove this love of cooking, and the ideas of botany and cuisine bounced off each other until Aileen was combining cuisines of the galaxy. Carolina barbeque gagh, plomeek and hasperat souffle, coq au Romulan ale... it caused a fuss in the commune. Also in the greater culinary community; at 15, Aileen won a cooking contest with her galactic fusion and it seemed like she was destined for culinary school. Until her sister Ella, the first of the younger siblings she doted on, was targeted by bullies, boys older than her being cruel for no reason. Aileen stepped in, but one against six never goes well; Aileen came out of it with a broken jaw, a broken nose, and a determination to save the world.

She was her father's darling for most of her childhood – his older children were kind but aloof to this small alien interloper. The only time they disagreed was over his second marriage when Aileen was eleven, an argument that drove Aileen into the woods for two weeks, during which she fell down an abandoned mineshaft and broke her leg. She lay in the dark and dust for three days and nights, watching the stars and sipping from her canteen, until she was located with input from Starfleet Survey Corps. The dark may have been terrifying to her then and even now, but the stars were bright. It was the brightness that had kept her going, and after the incident with the bullies, she was determined to be a star in a dark galaxy.

Aileen was an active child, learning to ski at four, and snowboard at six. The commune's isolation in the boreal woods of the north gave ample opportunities for an adventurous child like Aileen to run wild exploring, swimming, and dreaming of a place where she could be accepted and feel at home. Her decision to join Starfleet came from several places. Being always an outsider in her not-quite xenophobic hometown, the Starfleet career of the Emissary, her love of the stars, wanting to protect the weak... all of it played a part.

At the Academy, she at least wasn't the only alien, but her upbringing on Earth made her unable to fit in with other Bajoran students. Still, she developed friendships; her first year roommate (an Andorian woman named Tala) was the older sister she'd never had. Their friendship began when Aileen invited Tala back to her family home their first leave. It was the start of a hard winter in Northern Ontario, and Tala loved every second of the (to her!) balmy and beautiful week-long vacation. Aileen being funloving, and Tala mere inches away from wild, they threw the best parties, marked with Andorian rock and old Earth heavy metal at dangerous volumes. They also got into a lot of trouble with these parties, though there was nothing illegal occurring. Just...loud and annoying.
