Africa is a continent on Earth.

It is surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean to the north-west, the South Atlantic Ocean to the south-west, and the Indian Ocean to the south-east.
To the north-east of Africa are the continents of Europe and Asia.

It is the world's second-largest, and second-most populous continent, after Asia in both cases. Due to being the longest-inhabited continent, Africa is also considered by anthropologists to be the most genetically diverse continent on the planet. Africa, particularly Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes).

Africa boasts perhaps Earth's largest combination of density and diversity of wild animal populations. Wild populations of large carnivores and herbivores range freely on primarily open non-private plains. It is also home to a variety of "jungle" animals, including snakes and primates and aquatic life such as crocodiles and amphibians. In addition, Africa has the largest number of megafauna species, as it was least affected by the extinction of the Pleistocene megafauna. A few well-known African animals include zebras, elephants, lions, and rhinoceros.

In the late 19th century, European countries colonized almost all of Africa, extracting resources from the continent and exploiting local communities.

During the Eugenics Wars, North Africa was a hotspot of battle.

  • Captain Jonathan Archer's great-grandfather was involved in a campaign in North Africa.
During that conflict, he contacted the enemy commander in a successful effort to allow some non-combatant civilians time to get to safety.
