Admiral at Large

An Admiral-at-Large is a Flag Officer accredited to represent Star Fleet's interests across a large expanse of space.

Unlike other Admirals who are usually limited to a specific Headquarters area, the Admiral-at-Large is entrusted to operate across several sectors or sometimes hold a seat in an inter-disciplinary/inter-species delegation such as the former Inter-Species Medical Exchange. In some cases an Admiral-at-Large may even be specifically assigned a role to advise and assist the Federation Council or a member world's government in particular issues, or to direct special projects that fall under the jurisdiction of several different authorities.

Historically, the position of Admiral-at-Large has gone to Flag Officers who Star Fleet believes are capable of operating independently for extended periods of time, and who are able to function as 'problem solvers'.
