- The sixth space probe in the "Voyager" series, Voyager VI, is launched by NASA.
After its launch, Voyager 6 was swallowed by a singularity later named the "Black Star."
Transported across both time and space to a distant corner of the universe, it was badly damaged by the gravitational stresses.
After drifting near a planet inhabited by living machines, its programming was analyzed, and the machines enhanced Voyager VI's ability to collect information, thus creating V'Ger.
- The "Beethoven Burst" (GRB 991216) is detected, documented as one of the most powerful detected Gamma-ray bursts.
