  • March 13 – A geomagnetic storm causes the collapse of the Hydro-Québec power grid.
    6,000,000 people are left without power for nine hours. Some areas in the northeastern U.S. and in Sweden also lose power, and aurorae are seen as far as Texas.



  • October 9 - An official news agency in the Soviet Union reports the landing of a UFO in Voronezh.


  • November 9 - Fall of the Berlin Wall: East Germany opens checkpoints in the Berlin Wall, which was constructed to divide the country in half after WWII.
    Citizens are allowed to travel freely to West Germany for the first time in decades, and in the coming days, the same citizens physically tear the wall down.


  • The "Solar Maximum Mission" scientific research satellite, launched in 1980 to study solar flares, crashes back to Earth.
