  • July 20 – The human race, represented by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, lands on the Moon.
    At 02:56 UTC on July 21 (22:56 ET July 20), Armstrong takes the first human step on the Moon's surface.


  • The "Allende meteorite" explodes over Mexico.
    The largest carbonaceous chondrite (a class of primitive meteorites) ever found on Earth, over 2 tons of this meteorite were recovered.
    It was often described as "the best-studied meteorite in history." The Allende meteorite had abundant, large calcium–aluminum-rich
    inclusions (CAI), which are among the oldest objects formed in the Solar System.



  • Surgeons Denton Cooley and Domingo Liotta implant the first temporary artificial heart.
