- May 29 – Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity is tested by observations of the "bending of light" during a total solar eclipse.
These observations and tests are made independently of each other, by Arthur Eddington in Príncipe, and Andrew Crommelin in Brazil.
- July 28 – The International Astronomical Union is founded in Paris, France.
Their main objective is to advance astronomy in all aspects, including promoting astronomical research, outreach, education, and development through global cooperation.
