Personal History

Feta was born into a household that elected to follow a select few of Grand Nagus Rom's non-mandatory "Suggestions for the Modern Ferengi", primarily the suggestion that females may wear clothing if they so wish. As such, Feta does not have quite the anti-female-aliens prejudice that plagues most Ferengi, though he appreciates his fathers lamentations that this new female clothing is "absurdly expensive!".

Luckily his father found steady income by “pre-selling” goods to prospective buyers and buying the goods he consequently needed from shady contacts.

On a typically rainy night when Feta was 6 years old he lost his way to the food preparation area and discovered his mother in a closet with a communication device using his Marauder Moe voice synthesizer to sell goods to his father. When Feta protested that she had not gone through the proper channels for property rental, she hurriedly gave him a copy of Grand Nagus Rom's "Zen and the Art of Deep Space Station Maintenance", which he naively accepted without realizing it is given out freely by Grand Nagus Rom on special Ferengi celebrations, and therefore worthless though ironically rare since Ferengi generally despise "free" merchandise. Soon afterward his brother Neg took him aside when he realized what had happened and insisted that Feta "never tell father" what he saw that night, or it would ruin his fragile ego.

Having little else to do in the following months Feta read the entirety of "Zen and the Art of Deep Space Station Maintenance" as quickly as you would expect a 6 year old with very poor reading skills. This book would end up being the turning point in Feta's life, as the no-nonsense explanations of Roms duties aboard Deep Space 9 opened his young eyes to the wonder of engineering and scientific discovery generally lacking in Ferengi society. He developed a hankering for tinkering.

Eventually the rest of Feta's family caught on to his inventive tinkering- it was hard not to when gadgets around the house where constantly operating in unexpected ways due to Feta's inexperienced and unnecessary "fixes". Not willing to waste an opportunity to exploit his family, Feta's father purchased many inexpensive learning packets for him in the hopes that reading them would enable Feta to more efficiently maintain things in the household without breaking them. Fortunately for Feta these inexpensive learning packets were purchased from Federation sources, and included many in-depth science topics which he gobbled up and in turn Feta became more helpful around the house.

On one such instance of “free labor” when Feta was 14, he offered to make his mother a custom holographic identity with which to sell goods to father with. "He has got to be getting suspicious of the aloof nature of his source of goods, don't you think?", and she took him up on his offer. Little did she know he had been hired by father to do this, as father had been getting tired of dealing with someone who was clearly a Marauder Moe synthesizer. Father had of course known from the beginning, since the Marauder Moe toys were originally his. Mothers uncanny ability to acquire whatever goods father had pre-sold was simply too profitable a venture to stop.

As a result the family business was booming through this mutually profitable relationship. Father would arrange sales with the many old-fashioned buyers on Ferenginar that insist on face-to-face interaction with male Ferengi, and mother would somehow acquire the goods he needed. By Feta’s late teens his father was very wealthy, and his mother… possibly more so, unofficially. This gave Feta far more free time than was normally expected of live-at-home Ferengi, free time that he would use to become something of an amature academic.

Feta knew there was little opportunity for a scientist in Ferengi society, but he knew from his studies that there are many opportunities for one on Starfleet vessels - in fact many go on to become captains or even admirals! Feta understood that the most likely way for him to get ahead in life was to join Starfleet, he just needed to convince his parents to let him go.

This proved to be quite easy, as he approached his mother and said he would expose her dealings to father, and told his father that he would inform mother that he knew she was his primary goods dealer.

Both parents agreed independently to pay the full fare for transport to Starfleet Academy.

His older brother Neg left home shortly before Feta without any warning, and at the same time half of the admittedly overpayed transport funds where missing. However, Feta could not bring the missing funds up with his parents without them realizing they had both given him the full amount needed for transport.

So it was with a house in partial turmoil that Feta left his home, promising his mother that he will call back often and tell her anything he may find out about his brother's whereabouts.

It would take a month to reach Earth with the cut-rate itinerary, but that gave Feta plenty of time to brush up on Federation customs.

On the final leg of his journey, he found himself on a Federation transport ship with many Starfleet personnel eagerly anticipating shore leave on Earth. Not one to waste an opportunity to get a head start in Federation social interaction, Feta introduced himself to some of his fellow passengers. Some where not trusting of the Ferengi, but Feta was able to get some of the more open minded members to warm up to him. When they learned that he was planning on joining Starfleet, they where quick to point out that a Ferengi can't join Starfleet without a sponsor. One older officer, who was among those who originally distrusted Feta, chuckled and said, "Heck, I'll sponsor you. Even if it's just to watch you crash and burn!".

Feta smiled, "I am sorry that I will have to disappoint you, sir." That was the first of many "sirs".

Academy Major(s): Science
Academy Minor(s): Astronomical anomalies, basic ship maintenance
Hobbies and Pastimes: Attempting to invent things, brushing up on science
Short-Term Goals: Make actual friends with other Star Fleet personnel, Feta learned from Grand Nagus Rom’s writings that friendship has greater value than latinum in most of Federation space.
Long-Term Goals: Track down his brother, he has an unpaid debt with interest after all. Make important scientific discoveries

Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Earth-style business clothing.
Distinguishing Features: Keeps his teeth cleaner than most Ferengi
Friends: Like most Ferengi, his mother Meega.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Feta has vivid memories of his own birth
Best Time: Designing his mothers false identity hologram
Most Crucial Experience: Learning about the Federation from Grand Nagus Rom’s writings
Role Model: Kathryn Janeway, Feta learned about how Janeway, a science officer, became a Captain and then an Admiral while still engaging in the pursuit of knowledge and in spite of great hardships such as being female and getting stuck in the Delta Quadrant.
