Personal History

James was born on Earth where he grew up and lived a slightly hectic life. When James was thirteen both of his parents were killed in a hovercar accident. James went to live with his mother's sister where he earned the nickname ‘Buck’ because of his constant bucking of the rules. Of course, at the time his aunt only knew the half of it. Buck was not only breaking personal household rules like curfew and chores, Buck and his friends had steadily become more and more involved in illegal activities.

At age fourteen Buck was caught and charged for the first time. He and two of his friends broke into the house of a former Star Fleet Security Officer who had heard the intruders enter his house not because of his alarm systems, which they had bypassed, but rather by his years of training.

Over the next couple years Buck spent time in and out of detention centers as his life of theft and crime continued and when he was not in detention, he lived out on the streets. Two days before his seventeenth birthday Buck had finally bumped the system one to many times when he was charged with armed robbery of a holosuite entertainment center. Buck was sent to yet another detention center, this time however, rather than a month or two stay he was sentenced until he was eighteen where he would then be placed in a prison for several years.

While in the detention center Buck had a tough time fitting in. His personality was so polar opposite than most others that he often found himself in outnumbered fights- most of which ended badly for him. Three months in to his sentence Buck was placed in to an isolation cell for his safety, as well as that of the other occupants. During this time in isolation Buck’s only contact were the guards and a female tutor that helped Buck with his schooling. After fighting with the woman for weeks the two began a friendship and Buck found himself catching up on the years of schooling he had slacked in.

When Buck turned eighteen he went before a judge again where he would hear what the next five to ten years of his life would hold. Based on what he had accomplished over the year in the detention center, plus the judges previous Star Fleet experience, Buck was given an option: Spend the next five years in prison or join the enlisted ranks of Star Fleet. Buck of course, though reluctantly, joined Star Fleet. Though Buck had excelled in schooling when he actually paid attention to it, he was not a changed person. Sure he realized he had been dumb in his past, but he regretted nothing he did. He was however willing to try a fresh start, after all- anything was better than prison. Buck entered the enlisted ranks of Star Fleet and remained there for eight months where he managed to keep his nose clean. Due to his ‘previous’ skills, Buck was a natural fit for security and he quickly rose to the top of his fellow students. Eventually, as his first year drew to an end he was approached by his superior officers where they offered to sponsor him in officer training. Buck decided this was the best thing for him and within a few months he found himself at Star Fleet Academy majoring in “Security Operations.”

Buck’s time at the Academy was rough at times. Unlike the detention center and enlisted ranks training the Academy presented the Cadets with much more free time then Buck had experienced in over two years. Buck managed to stay out of major trouble, but did get into a handful of fights and even found himself reverting towards his thieving ways. Buck however made his way through the Academy and graduated in the middle of his class. He spent the first year out of the Academy stationed on a Sun-Tzu classed destroyer where he rose to the rank of Ensign. Soon after Buck found himself on a space station near Romulan Space. For the first time in his life Buck found himself enjoying life on the station: He had real friends, enjoyed his work, and actually had a genuine smile on his face.

One of the reasons Buck enjoyed his job so much was because he was often called upon to use his ‘special’ skills to access information and items from the Romulans that visited the station frequently. This was also the downfall of Buck Steele. As good as he was, it was difficult to match one starbase versus an entire Empire, especially one that was suspicious by nature. Buck was eventually caught breaking into a diplomats room and hacking his computer. The Federation, of course, denied Buck was under orders and he was court-martialed and placed in a Federation prison.

This, however, was merely a cover to move Buck into a different line of work for the Federation. Buck Steele became a full-time Intelligence Officer and was stationed in the Romulan Neutral Zone. He would spend the next five years working in that area for Star Fleet. During that time he met a good friend, Allie Briggs. Briggs was an expert with devices despite the fact that she was not a full-time Intelligence Officer Buck called upon her skills often in the field.

Buck was eventually recruited by Admiral Grant to be a part of a special intelligence team named SIS.

Star Fleet Special Intelligence Services (SFSIS)

For nearly ten years Buck worked directly for SFSIS. For the majority of this time he worked under the Command of Derrick Grant though there were times when he would go over a year without seeing the man.

During his early years in SFSIS Buck worked with a team led by a woman named T'Kir. On this team, Buck served as an infiltration specialist which meant he either found a way for them to get in and out of a location without being detected or else went undercover for an extended period of time to gain intelligence before an operation. During this time Buck worked very closely with Adam Jones who became a close friend and mentor of his.

Buck's missions with SIS were usually unique, strange, and very dangerous. They included standard things like retrieving intel from a hostile species, target assassination, and hostage rescue. At times however the mission assignments were also very unique such as infiltrating a Star Fleet vessel and even traveling through time to rescue Grant's younger sister from a time traveler and prehistoric dinosaurs.

During one mission Buck and Adam were separated from the rest of the team and it was believed that the others were killed. Buck and Adam eventually returned to Star Fleet Headquarters and were instructed to put together a new team. Buck recruited the brother of a former love interest named Allie Briggs. Allie's brother, Mathew Briggs was an excellent engineer, a very skilled pilot and had a large amount of athletic potential. Buck personally trained Mat for several months and eventually Mat became a very skilled killer and spy.

Buck, Adam, and Mat worked together for several operations taking orders from a man named Smith. Buck eventually learned that their team was simply being used as a puppet by Smith to do his personal bidding. Buck reconnected with the previously thought dead Grant who made it possible for their team to be out from under Smith's thumb. The sad repercussion of this freedom was that their team was disbanded.

SFSIS And Beyond

After the team was disbanded Adam and Buck began running solo missions and Mat was reassigned to Star Base Delta's intelligence field (though he later was assigned to a vessel- though perhaps as a spy).

Buck, however, lost contact with both men. Adam was now a ghost and Buck tried to keep his distance from Mat (though the two spoke from time-to-time). Most of Buck's missions were Star Fleet sanctioned though on occasion he took independent or personal assignments.

Buck, still feeling a debt to Grant, did the man a favor by helping him fake his own death and escape treason charges. Later on, after Grant was cleared, Buck agreed to serve as his Chief of Staff (though his real assignments would be off of the books).

Like countless other spooks, Buck had several businesses and companies to stash the money he had acquired throughout his career. One of those businesses was a coffee shop called "Common Ground" which served high-quality product at very low prices throughout the quadrant. This company, of course, had no direct tie to Buck.

Eventually, Buck retired from Star Fleet but still stayed in his line of work. Over the course of the next several years, Buck worked for both Star Fleet Intelligence and for others who hired him, though never in any official capacities. His missions ranged from helping people escape trouble, recovering kidnapped people, and eliminating targets deemed a threat to the Federation.
