Personal History

Early Years

Julia Adrienne Nielson was born to parents David and Victoria Nielson. Her mother was a flautist in the West Coast Symphony while her father was Chief Science Officer and exobiologist in Star Fleet.

Victoria taught all her children how to play musical instruments, and Julia seemed to absorb everything her mother taught her. Julia’s quest for musical knowledge played on the hopes of her mother that Julia might one day follow in her footsteps and become a professional musician. Julia eventually became known as a prodigy in the musical world, even getting accepted into a professional orchestra at the age of 11. However it wasn’t the ability to perform the music that had captivated Julia’s interest towards music: it was how music worked, the composition of pieces and what made them this way. Julia began tinkering with the composition of songs, seeing how they worked and what changing various elements of the piece did to the overall sound.

When Julia was 4 her father retired from Star Fleet when he realised the relationship between him and Julia's mother was rocky at best. He went back to school to get a doctorate in exobiology, and became a professor of biology at a university in Julia's hometown. However, being close to home David saw the dark side of his wife's personality and the terrible affect she was having on their kids. The marriage worsened, and the couple divorced when Julia was 8. Victoria won primary custody over the kids, and they were forced to spend weekdays with their mom.

In an attempt to respite away from her mom, Julia skipped school one day to visit her father at the university. Getting lost on campus, she ended up in the Physics and Engineering wing where an expo was taking place. Before Julia’s eyes were plans and schematics explaining how things worked. Julia couldn’t understand any of them, but for her they became magic. Her interest in engineering piqued, from then on whenever she visited her father she would get him to walk with her down campus to the Applied Sciences building. From that day on Julia tried to teach herself as much as possible about gadgets and the way they worked, taking things apart and tinkering with them.

Star Fleet Academy

As Julia got older and seriously began to decide what she would do with her life, the thought of being an engineer started to become her main focus. Her father had always told his kids tales of the days when he was in Star Fleet and Julia felt that joining would be an adventure. For her, her interest in engineering and being a Star Fleet officer went hand in hand.

However, Julia’s mother had always been a very controlling force in her daughter’s life. From what schools she went to, to how she spent her free time. Victoria was determined her daughter be just like her. Her mother had a knack for manipulating her daughter and making Julia feel miserable about herself and the decisions she made. It got so bad that Julia eventually stopped seeing her mother and moved in permanently with her father, who eventually managed to convince the courts to change the custody agreement. When Victoria found out that Julia was studying for the Star Fleet entrance exam, her mother tried everything she could to prevent her daughter from succeeding. Fortunately for Julia she was accepted to Star Fleet Academy on her first try.

First Assignments

Jules graduated from the Academy in the top 10 percentile of her class. She would have done better if she hadn’t done so poorly in the basic hand arms classes. Upon graduation she was promoted to the rank of Midshipman and was assigned to the USS Yeager, SC-8018. On her first mission Julia was a member of the away team that went down to a planet to repair the main power source aboard the planet to aid the alien life forms that lived there. She was successful in this endeavour, but in the end the Yeager crew had to destroy the planet in order to save the original planet.

On shore leave at the Collins IV Colony, the Yeager’s Chief Medical Officer and close friend of Julia’s, Ebony Liora, got pregnant. There were complications during the pregnancy and in order to save the life of both mother and child, the fetus was transferred to Julia. For two weeks Julia carried the child so Ebony could recover and the child could be safely returned to her mother.

Retaking and Rebuilding Sierra-18

Julia was involved with the retake of Space Station Sierra 18, SS-18 from the Vercours pirates. She was transferred to Sierra-18 once the station was under Star Fleet control again, and promoted to Chief Engineer. Julia oversaw repairs to the station, refitting it back to Star Fleet standards.

Sierra-18 was caught in the middle of a class 9 ion storm, and all but the senior staff and some essential personnel were evacuated. Hunkered down deep in the asteroid, the crew weathered the storm. Julia suffered from hallucinations due to spatial anomalies in the storm. The hallucinations were so serious that she nearly committed suicide, however her friends were much quicker than she and were able to stun her with a phaser before she could injure herself. Doctor Callum Hicks, Sierra-18’s CMO at the time, was able to cure the crew from these anomalies and gave Julia a clean bill of health.

Second Romulan War

Following the announcement of war with the Romulans, Sierra-18 was attacked by a convoy of Klingons. With Captain Joseph Valiant off the station and Commander Alexis Tregelen knocked unconscious a hole was left in the chain of command. Command fell to Julia following the incapacitation of Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Archer. She was able to chase off the Klingons, but not without sustaining damage to the station.

Julia was promoted to Second Officer of Sierra-18 following this event to help fill in the gap of command.

Shortly thereafter, Captain Valiant returned to Sierra. He had Julia organize a fancy dinner for the senior department heads. Before the dinner could take place, somebody sabotaged the main power grid of the station. During her investigation, the station was overwhelmed by Romulan soldiers. Star Fleet officers fought back, but to little success and eventually had to flee Sierra. Julia and Alexis Tregelen made their way to the shuttlebay to rendezvous with other survivors. And then before her eyes Julia watched as one of her best friends, Benjamin Vaughn, was obliterated by friendly fire. Julia was so frozen by shock that Alex had to drag her off the station.

The Impostor

The survivors of the Sierra invasion made their escape to Risa. This order confused Julia, and she eventually pieced together that Joseph Valiant was not who he said he was. Feeling that he was a Romulan spy in disguise and the person to blame for Sierra's invasion, Julia felt that he needed to be stopped before he put the Risan people in danger. Not certain who she could trust, Julia went to confront him in a cafe, pulling a phaser on the man and intending to stun him so that Star Fleet Security could apprehend him. However, while she was correct in it being a fake Valiant, it was not a Romulan spy but instead a Satarran in disguise. The phaser's fire ended up killing the man on the spot. Julia was taken into Fleet custody for murder.

Court Martial & SCE

For several weeks Julia was faced with a court martial for killing the Satarran, however she was eventually cleared of the charges and reinstated in the Fleet.

However, during her trial the Sierra crew were assigned to retake the Station. She was forced to take a position in the Corps of Engineers on a refit team as its Warp Dynamics Specialist. The death of a close friend, seeing her home captured, killing a man, being put on trial for doing something she thought was right, and now not being able to help save her home had a deep impact on Julia. She felt her morals tearing themselves apart, was wrought with uncertainly. Nightmares plagued her sleep, preventing her from proper rest, and depression plagued her during the day. She became a shadow of her former self, and would have resigned from the Fleet if her best friend Jaden Hawk hadn't convinced her to stay.

The first ship she was assigned to refit was the USS Dauntless, BC-1553. It turned out the Refit Commander had been purposely installing faulty parts, one of which almost cost Julia her life when it shorted out and stopped her heart. By thumping her chest Jules was able to keep herself alive, until the Dauntless' CO Captain Mike Wong stepped on the bridge to check in and saw her, ultimately saving her life. When the faulty parts were discovered, those involved were demoted and removed from the refit project. Julia was assigned as refit team commander and tasked to remove the faulty parts and complete the Daunty's refit. So impressed with her work and her commitment to the job, Captain Wong offered the position of First Officer of the Dauntless to Jules.

First Officer

On the Dauntless' first mission, a simple shakedown cruise, Julia found herself working closely with the Chief Engineer Lieutenant Vladimir Komoscov. They made sure that the battle cruiser was working in top efficiency. During the shakedown, the Dauntless picked up a distress call: a Fleet convoy was being attacked by the Cardassians. Being the closest vessel, the Daunty made their way to the situation. Able to chase off the Cardassians, the crew discovered that the convoy was heading to the planet Tekna. Apparently Tekna was tearing itself apart with earthquakes and the colonies on the surface were in dire need of assistance.

Julia commanded an away team to the surface to determine the situation, but what they found was grim. Rivers of magma overran the colonies, dragons made of fire attacked all the colonists. The teams evacuated as many people as they could before the planet ultimately turned it's crust inside out, leaving no remnants of the colony or any survivors.

During the following shore leave, Julia joined her friend Komoscov when he traveled to Klingon space to meet with his estranged family. During the trip, Julia realised that her feelings for the man were more than just friendship. Over the months she'd gotten to know him on the Dauntless, Vlad had worked his way into her heart and had helped get her on the path to get over her depression. It turned out his feelings for her were similar. When Vladimir was almost killed in a fight against his uncle, Julia knew she couldn't live without him in her life. Discovered safe, Vladimir promised Julia he would always come back to her. This was enough for Vladimir's family to consider them married. While the pair joked about their new marital status, they decided to simply see where their new romantic relationship took them.

Near the end of that same shore leave, Julia was forced to issue an emergency recall of the Dauntless crew when it was discovered that Captain Wong and Lieutenant Tara sh'Thane were killed in an explosion. The instances surrounding their deaths were suspicious, so Julia and the Daunty crew were given full jurisdiction on the investigation. Julia was instated as Acting Commanding Officer by Admiral Jeffrey Linden until the Captain was recovered or the case was closed. Luckily the investigation team found Wong and sh'Thane alive.

Julia remained as Acting Commanding Officer while Wong recovered from trauma received during his abduction. The Dauntless was then ordered on an emergency mission when the planet Vulcan was suddenly affected by strange spatial anomalies. Unknown alien craft were spotted around the planet, and all communications with the planet had ceased. Upon investigation, the Dauntless crew discovered that some deflector pulses could seal the curious rift and bring the original planet back to it's place. With the assistance of three Fleet ships, the plan was a success. However one of these ships, the Pacific Princess, seemed suspicious, and upon investigation it was discovered the ship was a rogue Star Fleet Intelligence ship. This was confirmed when, while in pursuit of the ship, Julia was contacted by SFIC. Ultimately the ship was destroyed in a fire fight with the Dauntless and all hands of the Princess were deemed lost.

The Dauntless was then ordered to transport supplies to Science Outpost Gamma-7. While enroute, they were trapped by some unknown alien entity. Forced to play the alien's game, Julia was killed by an exploding robot. Her relationship with Vladimir Komoscov was revealed when he vowed to avenge her death, however Julia was subsequently revived by the alien. The game was "won" when the crew figured out how to beat the game; unfortunately all records of how to win the game were erased from the memories of the crew and the computer's database.

During shoreleave on Carraya IV, Vladimir proposed to Julia. Their engagement was short, as they got married on the beach outside Julia's father's house only two weeks later, surrounded by friends and family in a small ceremony.

Jules and Vlad spent a couple weeks on their honeymoon. While relaxing on the beach with her new husband, Julia received a message from Star Fleet Command indicating her promotion to Commanding Officer of the USS Yeager, SC-8018. She almost turned the promotion down so she could stay with her husband on the Dauntless, however after a discussion with Vladimir and the news that he would be transferring to the Corps of Engineers Special Operations Division, Julia decided to accept the promotion. The Yeager being her first posting, she is quite excited to become the ship's new Commanding Officer.

Back on the Yeager

Being Commanding Officer of the Yeager felt like coming home for Julia. It was the first ship she'd ever served on, and it felt right for her to be the one in the centre seat now. Part of her hoped that her former mentor, Joseph Valiant, would have been proud.

With a fresh crew assembled for the little scout ship, the Yeager's mission took them into Romulan space to investigate why the star Eisn had suddenly gone super nova and then died. What was meant as a simple research mission as a shakedown cruise, turned out to leave the ship dead in the water. Power failures occurred across the ship, and in the darkness many of her crew reported sightings of ghosts. While trying to activate an emergency beacon the launch a distress call, Julia was doused with a good amount of radiation poisoning. It wasn't enough to seriously harm her, but it was enough to make her ill. She powered through it though, and was able to assist the Chief Science Officer and Chief Tactical Officer in solving their "haunting" mystery. Two alien creatures that fed off energy had attacked the Yeager, seeing it as a feast. However when regular light hit them, the creatures dissolved into nothing. All that remained of the creatures were some sensor scans. Energy was restored to the ship, the crew were able to complete their scans of the star, and return to Federation space.

The mission had been rocky for Julia, however, when many of her senior officers directly ignore her orders. It made her reconsider her choice to pursue the Command stream. She was able to visit her husband, who reassured her she was making the right choice to stick it out.

Back from shoreleave, the little scout ship was sent to the Betreka Nebula. There had been reported sightings of Klingon vessels lurking about, and since Space Station Sierra 18's sensors couldn't see through the murk of the nebula, the Yeager was tasked with checking it out. When an ion storm threatened the crew's safety, Julia orders the ship down on an apparently barren Class L world. However once they are in the planet's atmosphere it becomes clear that something had been there before. Following readings of a fusion reactor, an away team discovers a cave dwelling species.

While Julia awaited word from her crew and their findings, she discovered that what she thought was food poisoning was still persisting though it had been weeks since she'd eaten anything that wasn't replicated. With a medical tricorder she had stashed away in her ready room gave her initial findings, she put off a visit to Sickbay until she could get in touch with the only doctor who doesn't freak her out: her friend, Jaden Hawk. Julia attempted to reach out to her husband to tell him the good news, but repeated efforts over the next few months proved fruitless. She struggled with this, wondering why Vladimir would choose to ignore her calls.

Things unravel

An emergency call from Star Base Delta forced Julia to recall her away team. Once out of the nebula it was discovered that a strange species had come through the Bajoran wormhole, destroying the planet and Star Base Charlie. The Yeager was ordered to make haste to Sierra-18 to help fend off attacking forces. The little ship made it there in time to only protect fleeing escape pods and vessels. Julia was forced to bear witness to the destruction of a place she'd called home for so long.

With the destruction of a good portion of the 3rd Fleet, the Yeager was reassigned to the 4th Fleet under the command of Admiral Grayson. While attending the commissioning ceremony for the USS Chin'toka, Julia was among the command level personnel abducted when the ship was stolen. She joined her fellow COs in attempting to retake the vessel, and was ultimately rescued.

This was the start of things falling apart for Julia. It wasn't long after this that Julia received notification that her husband was currently listed as missing in action. He'd been assigned to assist in an engineering project, rebuilding some of the satellites destroyed in the 3rd Fleet attack, but never reported in for duty. Star Fleet had sent someone to investigate his disappearance and found little evidence. Julia attempted to reach out through other channels to her husband, but these efforts again proved futile, even after calling in many favours from some high ranking officers she knew.

With war on the horizon, Admiral Grayson forced Julia into an early maternity leave. Though she protested, stating that the Fleet needed qualified personnel more than ever, he denied her request to stay on active ship duty due to the nature of her pregnancy. Because her baby would be a hybrid Human-Klingon, the birth would take place sooner than a typical Human birth; plus Julia would eventually need to receive intensive medical care to see the baby to full term. Depressed from the loss of Sierra-18 and needing guidance, Jules returned to Earth. She stayed at her father's house, a place where she always trusted there to be steady ground in turbulent waters.

It took Julia a lot of time to sort out the tumult of emotions going through her body, many due to the pregnancy and many not. She continued to reach out to the people she knew to see if she could confirm or contact Vladimir, but still she was unable to find leads.

A new path

Julia gave birth to a happy, healthy baby girl Elizabeth Norah Nielson on Stardate 21211.10. Her friends and family visited whenever they were near Earth. The birth of her daughter also confirmed to Julia that her husband was truly gone; death was the only thing that would keep her husband away from the birth of their child.

A few months after Lizzie's birth, Jules received a visit from her once mentor Rear Admiral Madeline Perrins. The Admiral had been offered a position at Personnel Command that she couldn't say no to, but her last act at the Corps of Engineers was to name her successor. Perrins indicated that Julia was the candidate she was recommending. Floored at the offer, Julia was glad that her maternity leave offered her another few months to think over the offer. She loved her role as Commanding Officer of the Yeager, but engineering had always been her main passion. She accepted the offer and was promoted to Commodore upon her return from leave.

Julia served with distinction as the head of Star Fleet's Corps of Engineers, leading the Fleet into many new technological developments including the research into the transwarp project. During this time, however, war broke out with a species known as the Krynar. The Corps dedicated itself to creating technology that matched those of this new enemy.

However, at the height of the Krynar War, technology known as the graser weapon appeared on many Star Fleet vessels. This technology was unknown to Jules and Corps records had no indication of the tech even being developed. The devastating impact the graser had on the Krynar bothered Julia's value of life and her understanding of Star Fleet's purpose, and that combined with the mystery surrounding the weapon led her to begin information gathering on the weapon. Through contacts she developed over her decades of service to the Fleet, she is trying to covertly determine who okayed such a devastating weapon without her knowledge. To this date she has found many dead ends, leading her to believe the responsibility and the cover up of this project was from someone much higher ranking than her in Star Fleet.

During a return trip from Utopia Planitia, Jules ran into her longtime friends Benjamin Vaughn and Alex Ankar while on Star Base Alpha. This random happenstance kindled feelings towards her friend Ben. But because she was distracted with her research into the graser weapon, she didn't act on those feelings at the time. However, Ben seemed to have felt similar feelings towards her. After the war Ben transferred to Star Fleet Judge Advocate General's office as Security Advisor. He reconnected with Julia then, and the two have been seeing each other for several months now.

Recently, Julia was contacted by her old friend Alexis Tregelen, who had received reliable information that their old captain Joseph Valiant was alive. In consulting with Dan Wueste, it was determined this information was accurate. Jules and Tregelen departed on a mission to recover Valiant, on an old derelict space station known as The Pier.

It has been several weeks and the pair have missed several check ins. Julia and Tregelen's current status is mission in action.
