Personal History

Early Life

Jack’s early education and childhood were not exceptional by any stretch. He was largely considered average by most metrics. His grades were passing, his behavior acceptable, and his expressed interests were seen as healthy by is busy, working parents. Jack enjoyed his childhood. The only major suffering he ever experienced were the occasional, yet terrifying nightmares. These nightmares, where Jack found himself alone and adrift in space and somehow surviving without the aid of any sort of EVA suit or personal space craft of any type, imbued in him a phobia of being so vulnerable in vast expanses. This phobia expressed itself to lesser degrees sometimes whenever Jack found himself submerged in deep water, especially natural bodies like those on Earth, where one was unable to see much around. This was one aspect that Jack never shared with another living soul.

His sister, Mary, was younger than most of his peers next younger siblings. As he got older, he realized that the pregnancy resulting in Mary’s birth was most likely an unplanned one. His parents doted on her though, and in Jack’s estimation, paid more attention to her than they ever did to him. But that was all well and good by him. In fact, Jack’s largest struggle as a young man was a lack of future planning or a direction. As he finished his secondary schooling, he still had no real drive for his next steps in life.

Star Fleet Enlisted Career - Marine to “Medic”

Living on Mars, and with his mother’s occupation, enlisting in the Star Fleet Marine Corps seemed like an easy decision, as much as it was one made out of a feeling of being lost, and a feeling of already being bored with life. The Marines quickly gave Jack a life track, and hardy allowed him to continue to feel bored with life. With his parents’ permission, and quite a bit of worry on their parts, they gave permission for Jack to enlist at 17 years of age. Quite the contrary. Jack graduated from boot camp and went on to train as a tank crewman, and served out his 3 year term of enlistment with relative distinction. A saving grace with his Military Occupational Speciality, was the limited requirements of both Swim and EVA training. His requirements were the most basic, and he was able to gut it out without anyone noticing how terrified he was. Adrenaline had always been his friend.

In his second year as a Marine, Jack met a woman, named Cecilia, during leave from a long training operation. He quickly became infatuated with her, and she with him. And, in perpetuating an unfortunate but age old Marine tradition, the two got married very soon after. Their young marriage was difficult, and littered with more arguments than either of them had bargained for. Jack knew his wife was growing more and more dissatisfied with their lifestyle. So, when his enlistment was up, he bent to her pressure and transferred his enlistment to Star Fleet and underwent training to become a Medical Corpsman.

Things with Cecilia didn’t improve like they both had hoped, and Jack began to seriously worry. During a particularly heated argument, Jack caught her in a lie and was soon able to unravel the long chain of dishonesty, and garner a confession from his wife. She had been unfaithful to him for more than a year, and with one of his closest Marine comrades. A clean break from this relationship wasn’t in Jack’s cards, regardless of how much he wished for one. With adultery being against the Federation UCMJ, Cecilia’s lover was tried in a court martial, in which Jack was forced to testify.

Becoming a Star Fleet Doctor

A divorce was quickly obtained and the couple split ways. Jack went on to excel as a corpsman, and found his true calling in emergency medicine and battlefield trauma. At the end of his second enlistment in total, his CO recommended he apply for SFA’s Medical Program. With some consideration, Jack relented and never looked back. Training to become a Doctor was a very rewarding time for Jack, and he loved most of his time doing so.

He was conscious of his intentional distancing from his mostly younger peers and those around him, and that fed on the underpinnings of depression that lingered beneath his emotional surface. The increased level of EVA and water survival training requirements were a major struggle for Jack. This time he wasn’t as able to hide his terror. Yes, he kept it from his fellow cadets, but on his evaluations, instructors made note of it. Jack was able to push through though, and self-medicate afterwards with heavy rounds of celebratory drinking. Graduation and commissioning as a Doctor was enough to reinforce Jack’s self confidence, as well as the pride he could see in the faces of his parents as the title of Doctor John Sullivan was bestowed upon him. He was even more satisfied when he learned that he would be assigned to a front line vessel, the USS Dauntless.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Trauma Surgery
Academy Minor(s): Forensic Pathology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Jack has been working on various works of fiction as projects, but he feels none of them are quite right yet, and therefore are mostly in beginning stages, or scrapped altogether.
Short-Term Goals: To earn an accelerated or meritorious promotion to Ensign.
Long-Term Goals: To be the lead surgeon of a vessel or installation.
Personality: Jack is self confident, but usually an agreeable person to get along with. Some can come to think of him as slightly arrogant, but Jack never intends to be that way.
Sense of Humor: Dirty, somewhat off-color, or sleazy
Phobias: Open water/space. This is definitely irrational, because it does not affect Jack when he is aboard a space or water craft. Instead it only bothers him when he is personally in the water, or in an EVA suit. Both experiences have been few and far between for Jack, and limited almost completely to Star Fleet training.
Likes: Intellectual debates
Dislikes: Self-important leaders. Being called a “ginger”.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Verbose people. Those who seem to like to hear themselves speak.
Bad Habits or Vices: Smokes and drinks, sometimes alone too. Also occasionally lets his colorful language out, reminiscent of his time as an enlisted Marine.
Achievements: Spotless disciplinary and performance record while enlisted in the Marines.
Disappointments: Not being in the ‘field’ during the Krynar engagements
Illnesses: Occasional tension headaches caused by clenching his teeth too hard while sleeping. Slightly elevated blood pressure.
Strengths: The ability to focus under extreme pressure. Fine motor skill and dexterity. Both have served him well in the practice of emergency medicine.
Weaknesses: Short attention span for anything Jack feels is not relevant to him.
Fears: Feeling completely alone and vulnerable, either physically or emotionally/psychologically.
Prejudices: Unfaithful spouses/partners. Jack sees no need to maintain a relationship where one partner desires monogamy, if the other does not. He views ‘cheaters’ as actively trying to hurt their spouse/partner.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Relaxed fitting clothing when at home or in his quarters. Usually dresses slightly fancier than needed whenever he goes out in public.
Pets: None
Friends: None - Jack is more of a social loaner since he attended the Academy. He makes friends easily enough, but does not have any close friends, and no best friend.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Catching his wife in the lie that revealed her long term infidelity, with his best friend and former fire team leader. Testifying in the court martial for his former fire team leader, charged with adultery.
Best Time: Having personnel injured in combat credit and thank Jack for saving their lives. This happened more than once during his tour as a corpsman.
Most Crucial Experience: Jack’s decision to build on his medical knowledge as a corpsman and apply for SFA’s Medical program.
Role Model: Doctor Beverly Crusher. Jack admires Dr. Crusher’s strength and tenacity of character, operating on such a famous ship and with a history-making crew.
