Personal History

A charming but respectful young man, who had always dreamt of joining Starfleet since he was a small boy. He was a gentle and considerate child, who would often admire small creatures and making certain not to harm them. Growing up in Melbourne, Australia, he was a promising athlete from a young age, competing in a variety of sports primarily tennis and AFL. Born on Earth, he grew up with human culture and became a man of two worlds as he always tried to find a balance between his two backgrounds.

He would complete most of his schooling in Australia at Xavier College and Melbourne High School, where he excelled in the sciences, maths and English. Not the most popular student by any stretch of the imagination, he was however liked enough by most by his peers to become a school prefect voted in by his peers and teachers. After his schooling he would move to San Francisco to follow his Starfleet dreams.

After his move to America he was faced with a crossroads, did he choose medicine which everyone said would be ideal for him, or did he follow his heart and protect his loved ones and homeworld by joining Starfleet. He chose a career in Tactical operations over medicine in the hopes he would one day command a starship, but he was also heavily influenced by the Federation News Service broadcasts of the Romulan and Inquistor wars which drove him further into tactical. In spite of his tactical yearnings he was a calm and logical man who believed political power did not flow from the barrel of a gun (his favourite quote from his idol Captain Jean Luc Picard), however he is more than ready to use them when necessary. Even when he was young he showed great concern for his comrades, classmates and family and is willing to go great lengths to ensure their safety.

Developing a keen strategic mind during his studies, he is also an avid chess player and enjoys several other games such as Strategema. He loves nothing more than to interact with family and friends. He was described by his academy lecturers as a man of strong convictions and a resolute sense of what is right and wrong. It was noted in many tactical training scenarios he would leap to the aid of the defenceless, placing their safety above his own. He can be counted on to provide an honest opinion and to carry out reasonable orders but won't hesitate to voice disapproval at something fundamentally unethical or immoral.

He completed his Academy studies, majoring in Tactical and Weaponry (Starship and Handheld). His academy experience was surreal, the demanding study and his own ruthless expectations led to more than a few sleepless nights. This didn't stop him from enjoying the academy lifestyle, as he was a regular at the 602 and San Francisco bars.

During his academy studies he met Charlotte Summers, a beautiful young Bajoran girl with dark black hair and ocean blue eyes. They would become fast friends and regularly studied together despite her doing medical instead of tactical. Quickly they began dating, and gradually they fell in love, and after their 4 years at the Academy he had planned to propose to her after their graduation.

She had become such a massive part of him and he drew so much strength from being with her, that he couldn't see a world without her in it. Sadly this would be realized when half way through final semester, Charlotte along with a number of civilians and several Starfleet officers would be killed in a shuttle craft explosion linked to an anti-Starfleet terrorist cell. A crude explosive was missed during inspection by the Paklid technician.

Nathaniel was swiftly overwhelmed by grief over Charlotte's death, culminating with him collapsing during his final exam and being diagnosed with Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy. It would not be until he took a sabbatical from the academy back home to Australia that his parents managed to get through to him and convince him that giving up on his Starfleet career is the opposite of what Charlotte would have wanted. After treatment and therapy Nathaniel returned to the Academy to attend his graduation, he resolved to forge one of the greatest careers in Starfleet history and to protect the Federation for as long as he lived.

Regarding his Trill background, he had expressed a keen interest in becoming joined but has since cooled on the idea as he doesn't want to pass on his pain and experiences regarding Charlotte to another person when he is gone. He does however like the idea of her memory never ceasing to be as it is passed on from lifetime to lifetime, therefore he is still considering the option of applying to be joined.

Personality: Calm and respectful demeanor, easy going around colleagues and friends, logical and open-minded. Not prone to outbursts of anger usually but can become extremely passionate when he discusses upholding the civil liberties of Federation citizens and the rule of law. After Charlotte’s death Nathaniel was a little more distant and less jovial, with little to no interest in pursuing another romantic relationship. He remains massively driven to protect others from experiencing his pain. He has mostly recovered mentally but still bears some dep rooted scars which can sometimes cause him to lash out when discussing ‘uncomfortable topics’.

Disappointments: The Decommissioning of the Enterprise-E
Illnesses: Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (Broken-Heart Syndrome), treated and full recovery made.
Strengths: Strategi mind, skilled in hand to hand combat, advanced knowledge of weapon designs, disarmament, repair, and first aid. Well disciplined.
Weaknesses: From a personality perspective, Nathaniel exhibits emotional scarring, stubbornness, and an occasionally argumentative behavior on serious topics. He holds himself responsible for not preventing Charlotte’s death, which has left him with guilt issues. In the academic perspective Nathaniel struggled in his youth with art and music, although he has always wanted to try and learn an instrument again.
