Personal History

.

Early Life

Mathew grew up the youngest of seven on a space station. His father was an engineer on the station and his mother kept busy with the family needs. He had 4 older sisters and 2 older brothers. His parents encouraged each one to have their own likes. He enjoyed learning chess from his father, playing many hours with he and Allie, the sibling closest in age to Mathew. Allie usually beat him though. Their mother taught music lessons on the station. Mathew learned to play the guitar fairly well. One of his favorite things to do was hang out with his friends and Allie. He and Allie would solve all sorts of puzzles, especially electronic-type puzzles. Allie was good at pushing his buttons, causing him to react. He often reacted angrily. His parents got him active in physical activities to help him calm when needed.

Only his oldest sister, Mallory and Allie, chose Star Fleet like their Father. Mallory studied Science, much like his sister Allie. Mallory was lost during a mission, though the reason was never explained to Allie or Mathew’s satisfaction. Mathew decided to study to be an engineer.

Academy Years

Mathew had his sister Allie to lean on while attending the academy, or at least most of his academy years. He studied well and managed through the classes the academy offered, but the aspect of maintaining his cool when under pressure was still of concern to others he knew. Allie graduated and was sent off on her first commission, but remained a constant support for Mathew. It’s difficult to say who needed who the most: Mathew or Allie. They proved to be quite a team when together, whether working on projects together or supporting each other through the academy. Mathew enjoyed meeting people at the academy, but only a few close friends who he knew well. Finally, his hard work paid off and he graduated! His first assignment was on board the USS Enid, serving as Midshipman Briggs, Engineer.

USS Enid

It was during Mathew’s first tour on the USS Enid when he was told about his Allie dying while aboard the USS Gettysburg. Once again, there was not much information given to him about what happened. Mathew decided to investigate further. Unfortunately, his research turned up nothing. He simply found less about Allie’s death than when Mallory died, and that was very little. Mathew tried all the techniques his parents, his sibs, and his friends had taught him to keep his frustrations and anger about the lack of information calm.

No matter what Mathew did, he developed anger for the Star Fleet. He never understood why he or his family could not know what happened. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became and worked on breaking into Star Fleet Security Computers. His free time was spent researching what he would need to know, isolating him from others. His boss on the USS Enid referred him to counseling and implemented mandatory counseling sessions. He did what was asked, but never was totally truthful with them.

Once the USS Enid returned from being away on its mission, the crew were released on leave. Mathew’s anger had consumed him so much, he ended up stealing a private vessel. After he did, he wasn’t sure what he had done, as it wasn’t part of his original plan to find out what happened to his sisters. He made his way to Earth quickly, attempting to hide out. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long before he was discovered and found himself taken to the brig at Star Fleet HQ.

It seemed that his plans and own research had sparked the interest of a Captain Smith, who offered Mathew a deal to get out from under the charges against him. Mathew found himself agreeing to work for this man in Star Fleet Intelligence, simply to get away from the many charges facing him. He figured it would keep him from explaining his stupidity to his parents as well as save his career.

Mathew was taken to an odd station, meeting with two other men. Both men had other specialized skills that weren’t normally taught at the academy. After an odd device was painfully inserted into Mathew’s head, the man named Buck was put in charge of Mathew’s training.

The training was not something Mathew would want to repeat. While he was able to complete the physical training, it wasn’t easy. It did help Mathew in not only getting in the best shape he’d been, but also controlling his anger. Buck also put Mathew through emotional training. This was the hardest part of anything Buck asked him to do. Thankfully Buck was patient with him and for all that he did to test Mathew, he also supported him. After training, Buck and Mathew were sent on a mission. Buck seemed to look after Mathew more than what seemed normal. While it bothered Mathew at first, he began to trust and look up to Buck. After a serving a few missions with success, Mathew experienced his first unsuccessful mission. Mathew was sent to Star Base Delta, to serve under (now) Commodore Smith.

Star Base Delta

Mathew had a lot of time on his hands to think about Allie (and Mallory). He continued to attend counseling sessions, working on dealing with their deaths as well as to dealing with his temper. Exercise had served him well when growing up and with Buck, he decided to keep on a regiment of physical exercise. He also began studying in the area of Tactical. This kept his mind busy and even started to excite him and soon convinced himself this could revitalize his career in Star Fleet.

USS Copernicus

Finally, Mathew felt ready to seek a ship placement and interviewed for an opening on the USS Copernicus. Surprisingly, he was offered the Chief Tactical Officer position. It shocked him into thinking about the decision longer than most officers would take, but in the end, he took it.

Mathew enjoyed the Copernicus and met people he hoped to keep in contact. The Captain and First Officer were difficult to figure out and were hard on him in regards to completing monthly reports. The ship never had an easy mission. But one of the hardest for him involved a virus, although he didn’t know he’d been infected. All Mathew remembers is the conflict between the Second and Fourth Fleets and during the mission, a Commander Ohmsford from the Fourth Fleet appeared on board the Copernicus. Mathew defended the ship and its crew from certain attack from the Ohmsford and for his work, was detained in the brig. After treatment from a virus that had taken over Mathew, it was explained to him what happened. While the captain and first officer verbalized their trust in Mathew hadn’t changed, he never felt the same comfort as he once had. After the next mission, during shore leave, Mathew received a short message on his PADD from the captain of the Copernicus, explaining that his services were no longer warranted. There was no other communication from his (now) former ship’s captain and this only increased Mathew’s anger. While on board Star Base Alpha, Mathew turned to his now best friend, it seems: Scotch. The drunken stupor he was in along with hitting an officer unprovoked resulted in a demotion in rank for Mathew. He then discovered he had been transferred to the USS Gettysburg, under the command of Tyra Crawford.
