Personal History

Rin follows most of the Bajoran customs, including regarding his name. His first name is Rin, his family name is Azernal, but unlike most cultures, it is arranged as Azernal Rin. Additionally, being able to address him as Rin would be an honor he would give to those he chose. Anyone who wished to address him less formally than Azernal should call him Az instead of Rin.

Pre-Starfleet

After the Occupation, Bajor struggled to create a politically stable climate for their planet. The City of Hathon offered a family from Zakdorn food and housing if they would come help them create a city. Since the Zakdorn are well known for their strategic minds, they are sought out throughout the galaxy for political and advisory positions. The Azernal family answered the request, and moved to Bajor. Mial Azernal was the only son, and though he was 24 at the time, he moved with his family. He easily found employment in the agriculture department, working with the Bajorans to create more efficient farming practices. Here Mial met Dahn. He fell in love at first sight, but was raised with the standard egotism that his people possessed. Initially turned off by his egocentrism and sometimes obnoxious posturing, his strategies to win her love eventually overcame her defenses.

Rin grew up often feeling like he was split between the two worlds. His parents, who got along in every other way, often fought loudly as they struggled between how he would be raised. After just a few months, both parents agreed that they should not have another child; Rin was difficult enough to raise. The first battle came with his name. His mother eventually won, so Rin would arrange his name in the way that was customary for Bajorans. Additionally, in congruence with Bajoran customs, the use of his first name, Rin, would be an honor that was his to grant, instead of the right it was often seen as in other cultures. His parents argued over where Rin would be raised. Dahn did not want to leave Bajor, but Mial wanted his son raised in the culture of the Zakdorn. They eventually agreed that they would live on Bajor the first 5 years, then move to Zakdorn and live in the Azernal family home there for 10 years, and then move back to Bajor. During this time, it was crucial to both parents that Rin be raised fully aware of both cultures.

At the age of 7 he entered the Zakdorn school system which existed to teach students not only the basic education, but also train their minds in the ways of strategy. This was the first time Rin had been exposed to people outside his family and friends, and was shocked at how he was treated. His teachers assumed he had mental deficiencies due to his Bajoran heritage, and his classmates often picked on him. This only served to propel Rin to exceed all expectations set for him. He constantly was the top rank in his school and outperformed the other students. This earned him the admiration and respect he desired from his teachers and classmates. He developed a close knit group of friends, but had a large group of acquaintances. He was seen as a very popular person, not only in school but throughout the community.

His mother had been orphaned when her parents were killed by Cardassians during the Occupation for refusing to show the Cardassian flag outside their house. She felt it important for her child to have the skills needed to defend himself, and his land and country. Thankfully, Mial agreed, seeing this as positive skills for a tactician to learn. Therefore, Rin is skilled in many weapons including phasers, blades, and hand-to-hand combat. His personal interests however leaned more toward starship weapons and large troop movements.

Rin felt his world was ripped away when, at the age of 15, his family moved back to Bajor. During their time away, both he and his mother had changed to accommodate more of the Zakdorn behaviors and mannerisms. The friends and family they had left on Bajor now shunned the family that was often seen as rude and overbearing. His intellect now earned him ridicule. Rin struggled to create friendships, but found himself scorned again and again. One day, coming home into the worst fight between his parents, he lost his temper. As they threatened to divorce, he rebelled against the constant arguing. Ripping off his earring and throwing it to the ground, he declared that he no longer wanted to be a part of the family, and that he was going back to Zakdorn. Storming out of his house, he realized he had nowhere to go. Still upset at his parents, he refused to return home.

His strategic mind worked for him once more as Rin approached the Bajoran Special Forces commander in his city. It took only a few minutes for him to sign up, and although he was only 16 he was pleased to find out he didn’t need his parents’ permission. He quickly breezed through the boot camp with his knowledge of strategy coupled with his previous education in fighting. He rose through the ranks quickly, and became the youngest Lieutenant Commander of the Special Forces at 22. He stayed at this rank for almost 3 years, and it was during this time that he decided he wanted more. The Special Forces had allowed him to use his strategic training to move troops and win battles, but he felt he had spread his wings as much as possible on the planet. Packing his bags, he signed up for a LOA, and headed back home – a place he hadn’t been in 6 years.

Not sure what he would find, Rin approached his home wearing his Special Forces uniform, with a bag of possessions held over one shoulder. Knocking on the door, he was surprised when a young child opened it. Bending down to one knee, he could see the Bajoran ridges accompanying a full 3 cheek sacs on each side of the child’s face. He heard his mother calling from inside the house to enter, so he did. As he entered the kitchen, she turned and dropped the glass she had been holding. Water spilled all over the floor, but neither of them noticed as she launched herself at him, enveloping him in a tight hug. Here, he reclaimed his family earring.

In his time away, Rin found that his parents had made up, as they always did, and searched for him. They couldn’t find a trace of him on Bajor or Zakdorn, and had been devastated. So alone had they felt, they decided to have another child, and try to do better this time around. Enter his sister, Yelan. 16 years younger than him, she was to be raised completely on Bajor, with Zakdorn customs. After spending a month at home, reconnecting with his family, Rin knew he had to make a decision for his future. After much discussion with his parents, he applied for a position in the Transfer Program. This program allowed Bajoran military professionals to transfer to a Star Fleet position, maintaining much of their military seniority.

He was accepted in this program just after his 25th birthday and was assigned to the USS Dragon, a battleship in the 2nd Battle Group, in the Battleship Strike Group. There he served under Captain Chell Broht as the Strategic Operations Officer who utilized his strategic abilities combined with his desire to coordinate ship and large troop movements. After 6 months here, he was awarded the rank of Lieutenant. 2 years later, at the age of 27 he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and head of Strategic Operations for the Battleship Strike Group.

USS Pegasus, CL-2500

Rin received orders to report to Star Base Delta as the First Officer of the Pegasus. Upon arriving, he reported in to the Captain, only to find that both the ACO and his own position were temporary, only for the journey to bring the ship to its rightful crew. Rin was unsure just what his orders were, he hadn't been told it was temporary, leading him to think perhaps he was reassigned to accompany new ships...something he would have severely disliked. The ship was taken to meet up with the other 4th fleet ship already present at the site of an emergence from an alternate reality. Shortly after arriving, a faction of the aliens launched a probe-like vessel from the planet that resulted in an energy beam striking and disabling the Nova. Much of the Nova crew was evacuated onto the Pegasus, where Rin had assumed command during the emergency. Nick Ristone was put in command, and allowed Rin to maintain the FO position temporarily until a decision could be made in calmer times.

After the system reverted back to it's own reality and the Pegasus and flotilla were on their way back to Star Base Delta, Ristone confirmed Azneral's status as First Officer permanently. The crew was given shore leave, but it was not down time for Az. He had to learn all about the perks of being a First Officer: the paperwork. Getting to know his crew didn't come as easily as he had hoped, and he had friction with a number of people, both senior officers and junior crew. Their leave was cut short when a distress call came from the Carraya system. The 4th Fleet along with the USS Ticonderoga, CA-1471 were dispatched to figure out what was going on. Upon arriving in the system, they discovered Klingon ships. The Pegasus was attacked by a cloaked weapon that emitted an EM-type field limiting communications and sensors. The ship was attacked and split in half. They were then boarded by what appeared to be Borg/Klingon Hybrids. Captain Ristone was knocked unconscious and the CSO Tucker, Judith opened fire. Many lost their lives as the Bridge was defended from the intruders. Eventually, the Captain and COS went to the other part of the ship and headed toward the planet to assist with ground operations while Azernal remained on the Bridge attempting repairs. A few hours later the pieces of the ship reconnected and headed home, leaving the planet in disarray and without any type of conclusion.

The deaths that occurred after the Captain was knocked unconscious were the first deaths Rin felt responsible for, and he had a hard time coming to terms with them. He sought council with his Captain to learn how to properly handle the emotions that the loss of life left in him.

During shore leave, Rin was responsible for conducting two Command Certification Tests, one by request on DeWitt, Kyle and one by means of subterfuge on Scott, Douglas. Unfortunately, the test on Lt. DeWitt had to be put on the hold when the man attempted to mutiny after the first order was given and Captain Ristone had to take over the testing. The secret test Azernal administered to Lt. Scott went perfectly; the man didn't suspect a thing. At the promotion and awards ceremony, both officers were promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Captain Ristone handed out the medals and promotions to everyone at the ceremony, including Azernal's own Commendation Medal before everyone was dismissed. Az was called back to the stage by the CinC and promoted to full Commander, a complete surprise. His own Captain didn't do the promotion as it took longer to process since it had to be approved by Star Fleet and the Bajoran Special Forces.

Captain Ristone was reassigned and they were given a new Captain - a security man named Ryan Cooper. The ship was sent to explore an area as part of a taskforce, and the Pegasus was assigned first contact with a planet named Weyden. Here they found extremly advanced sensor technology, but a complete lack of planetary defenses. Their technology allowed them to see an incoming ELE asteroid - and scan the Pegasus computer banks to discover the people and policies of the Federation. Due to this, they figured the Prime Directive would stop the crew from destroying the ELE. With the destruction of their planet imminent, they settled on a plan to infect the away team with a mind parasite that allowed them to be somewhat controlled. Azernal, as the ranking member of the away team, was given strong suggestions toward distrusting his new CO and needing to take over command of the Pegasus for the good of the crew and the Federation as a whole. The rest of the away team had the suggestion to trust pretty much anything Azernal said or did. The mutiny went forward with Azernal assaulting his CO and taking quiet commmand of the ship. His actions didn't go unnoticed - the CTO Kyle DeWitt had some incredible luck and had a gut feeling something was happening. Although he was easily neutralized, the distraction led to the CE switching sides and working with Cooper to retake the ship after Schwicker developed a cure.

During the retaking of the Bridge, security officer Edwards (who was influenced by the mind parasite) set his phaser to kill and began shooting. He took down a security officer before the phaser was knocked out of his hand by Cooper. Azernal, who was recovering from the cure of the mind parasite, saw Edwards pull a knife and begin disemboweling the Captain. Taking the phaser that he was unaware was set to kill. Desiring to stun Edwards, but dizzy and unable to truly focus, he pulled the trigger at the same moment that Cooper pushed Edwards over, taking his spot and the phaser beam. Cooper was dead.

During this time, Azernal was informed by the Weyden people of the destruction Bajor, as well as their possession of an untested device that could get the Pegasus to the destruction site instantaneously. They arrived, technically 10 minutes in the past, at the destruction site and met up with Captain Ristone who was escorting a new ship. Ristone worked with JAG to figure out the death of Cooper. Azernal entered a stage of deep depression unable to cope with his actions on the Bridge bundled with the destruction of Bajor and the death of his family. He felt guilt over his own actions as well as the actions of the rest of the away team. If he had simply resisted then nothing would have happened since the others were only under suggestion to listen to him. The away team members were secluded to their quarters for a few days and then slowly returned to duty as the investigation began to conclude. Azernal remained in his quarters, barely eating and existing mostly in a vacuum of depression. When they arrived at Star Base Delta Ristone accompanied Azernal to the remaining JAG interviews. Although he had been assured by Ristone that he was not going to be removed from duty, Azernal felt it was what he deserved.

The Star Fleet counselors required each member of the crew involved in the mutiny to attend the awards and promotion ceremony. Azernal initially intended to ignore the order, feeling that his crew did not want to see him there and that he was due to be tossed in a penal colony for mutiny and murder. Nurse Emilia Cirrus would have none of it and came to his quarters, forcing him to attend the events. Captain Ristone was reappointed command of the Pegasus, but also demoted to Commander. The ceremony was interrupted by an alert, and Azernal was transported to the Pegasus, clearly showing his status as First Officer remained despite the previous mission. However, despite the reinstated command of Captain Ristone, the Pegasus was reassigned to a new battle group and set on a classified mission with a classified crew. The already splintered crew of the Pegasus were distributed throughout the rest of the fleet.

USS Avenger, NCC-1500

After being informed of the crew change on the Pegasus, Azernal slipped even deeper into a state of depression. His friends tried to visit him and pull him out of his own personal hell, but he refused to see them, or would only allow them brief moments of attention. The rest of Az’s time was spent alone in his quarters, alternating wildly between quiet reflection and angry outbursts. His guilt was eating him alive.

Without much delay, Azernal was assigned to the USS Avenger. It came as a personal blow when Azernal opened his orders to see he was not to serve as the First Officer of the Avenger. It appeared that Nick was the only one with faith in his abilities – and looking at his jacket, he wouldn’t blame the Captain that would pass on having him as a First Officer. When he reviewed the roster and saw a familiar name as First Officer instead, however, he couldn’t quite decide what to feel. He had equal parts elation and happiness at his friend Tyra being promoted to a position she quite well deserved, and envy and anger at her stealing his ‘position’. A part of him wondered how she had walked away from the mess with a promotion, but a larger part knew that what happened was his fault, not anyone else’s – and if someone’s career was going to slide back over it, it should be his.

Azernal was pleased that he still got to wear the command red. He knew that it didn’t mean ‘command’ – but it still felt more comfortable than any other color would have after so long. He was intrigued by the idea of an alternate reality crew and was pleased at the idea of being on the ship to see how the crews meshed.

Az’s first mission on the Avenger was troublesome. It started with revisiting Bajor to go through the wormhole. Around his planet, they found scavengers and pirates, and Az felt his blood boil with rage at the thought of these lowlifes picking the remains of his planet apart. He was angry at Star Fleet for not doing more to protect what little he had left. When the Avenger traveled through the wormhole, Az found himself praying to Prophets to reveal themselves to him and explain why this had happened and how the entire destruction of Bajor could have fit into their plan. Such sweet answers did not come.

The James Madison was ejected on a covert mission to collect White, a substance needed to help the Jem Hadar soldiers on the Avenger stay battle ready. At the same time, the Avenger was to try to negotiate a treaty for the same item. Azernal, along with a small team, transported to the Wadi homeworld where the mission fell apart quickly. They had been betrayed by one of the Vorta – and the entire sector had been usurped by the Krynar forces, which they discovered when they were joined by a Krynar. The Krynar quickly dealt with their security forces and then turned to them. They attempted to force the Captain to submit, but what they did to Az was much worse.

Azernal was proclaimed to be ‘unworthy’. The Krynar projected the death of Bajor onto his mind. Not just the explosion that Azernal had already seen – no the Krynar projected the actual feelings of the millions that had died felt. He felt their terror as they struggled to understand what was happening, he felt their pain as they were burned to death, and he felt the nothingness that followed when every single one of them was dead. He felt this a million times over – for every single person that died. He felt as if he had been that person, standing where they were standing, lived their lives and felt their last moments. He felt his father, mother and sister die. He felt his entire planet die.

They were rescued from the planet, but if Az had been on the brink of ruin before, he was fully engulfed in it now. He gave a brief report of what had occurred, but couldn’t quite find the words to describe the true depths of what happened. He feared losing the last thing he had – his commission – if he revealed too much. He knew he was dangerously unhinged, but he had faith he could keep it together while on shift.

Unable to deal with the images in his head, Azernal took to drinking. At first, it was just a glass of light wine before bed to help him sleep. Soon, he was up to two, and quickly thereafter three and four. He switched to harder alcohol, again working up from a few sips to full glasses, until he poured himself a glass of whiskey as soon as he got to his quarters when his shift was over. It didn’t stop there however, sometimes, he needed a little bit just to motivate him to get him out of bed in the morning. His slipping state of mind wasn’t difficult for his friends to see, but they were unaware of the full extent of his addiction as he had long ago pushed them so far away they didn’t even try anymore.

Their next mission was a routine patrol where they happened to discover a probe that had been lost for many years. The Captain decided, in his infinite wisdom, to pack the tiny James Madison with the senior staff and send them off on a ‘team building’ mission to grab the probe. During the briefing for this mission, Az came face to face with the alternate version of the man he had killed, Ryan Cooper. He fled the Captains Ready Room, unable to face this ghost of his past, and he headed directly to his cabin. He needed a drink. It was when he was in the turbolift that he had a moment to breath and realize what was happening. It was the first time Az felt he needed to drink on shift – which had previously been the lie he told himself to prove his addiction wasn’t an addiction. He was angrier at himself than anyone else as he redirected the turbolift to the counselors office. He was interrupted from talking to her by the orders to report to the JM for the multiday mission. He swung by his cabin, picking up his go bag and packing it with bottles of alcohol. He knew he wasn’t going to make it through the mission if he had to be sober.

Despite being ordered to meet with Crawford directly after launch, Az waited hours before chiming her door. She was prepared to let it go – but something in Az wanted a fight, and he knew exactly how to get one from her. He screamed at her, attacking her personally and professionally, and railed at his life. She allowed him no quarter and came back with cold retorts that forced him to reshape his own definition of his reality. Through an emotionally charged series of back and forths, he found himself sobbing on the floor, finally allowing himself to release the tears he never had for everything that had happened. She confiscated his alcohol, and after a tense couple of days spent in his cabin fighting the withdrawals from his addiction, he emerged from the cabin a changed man.   There were many things that Azernal couldn't explain in a rational way, and he knew there were scores of people who considered him to have gone completely insane. During the final battle with the Krynar he had tried. He was stuck, remembering flashes from his vision with the prophets yet unable to convince anyone of the veracity of his statements. So, they annihilated another race. He felt like his first duty as Emissary was a failure, but over time he came to realize that he was never meant to stop anything. After that mission, he left Star Fleet. He had a responsibility to his people now, and he knew he needed to get to Bajor and meet with Kai Vennia.   His initial requests for an audience were denied as she had been flooded with people claiming to be the new Emissary. But he knew that he had to make her believe. If he couldn't make her believe it, then he wasn't sure he would believe it anymore either. So, he waited, literally, outside her door. For days. He didn't move from the spot for food or water. Her compassion made her bring him water. And his commitment made her take notice. He told her of his visions and she asked for his life story. He told a muted version, leaving out much. She pushed, confronted him on the prophecies, and finally he relented. It took days, but he regaled her with the details of his life from birth to her doorstep. And so she presented him to the world.

The last three months of his life were hectic. He was unused to being the center of attention, and quite overwhelmed. He faced a lot of opposition. He wrote down the vision he had, to the best of his memory, and it was shared for all to read. He was blamed by many for the heartache of losing Bajor. He was seen as an impostor by others - not the true Emissary but an opportunistic lech who was taking advantage. Those people were the hardest for him as to them he had no respect. The rest of the planet at least respected his service - his previous Special Forces history and then his Star Fleet service. The nicest of his detractors were those who simply didn't believe in another Emissary at all. It seemed everywhere he went the crowds were split in their opinion of him. He remained focused on his main goal: helping his people come together again through the pain and sorrow of the loss they had suffered. And despite often feeling unbalanced and out of control of his own life, he resisted the urge to drink.   Just after his third month he began having visions again. He was in a Star Fleet uniform, and this time it wasn't red, but security yellow. He was on an unfamiliar Bridge, with an unfamiliar bridge crew. But it was clear what he was supposed to do. Somehow he knew that he wasn't supposed to be a Special Forces representative this time though. Something pushed him to contact Star Fleet and ask to join officially as a Star Fleet Officer. And so, within a few weeks he had the permission he needed. He would be a security officer on a star ship.
